Will NY unemployment send a new KeyBank card automatically after account closure?

My NY unemployment account got closed last week (not sure why, everything was fine before). Now I'm wondering if they'll send me a new KeyBank debit card in the mail automatically or if I have to call them to request one? Anyone been through this before? I need that money ASAP and don't want to wait weeks if I should be calling them now. Thanks!

3 weeks?? Ugh that's way too long. Did calling them speed anything up or were you just stuck waiting the whole time?

It depends on why your account was closed. If NYSDOL closed it due to inactivity or an issue with your claim, you'll need to call them first at 888-209-8124 to resolve that, then request a new card. If KeyBank closed it for security reasons, call their unemployment card services directly at 866-295-2955. They don't automatically send new cards - you have to request one in either scenario.

Thanks for the details. I'll try both numbers tomorrow. Really wish they'd make this clearer on their website!

No, I didn't know about the direct deposit thing. That's actually better for me if I can set that up instead!

Former KeyBank employee here. For NY unemployment, if your account was closed, you MUST call both NYSDOL and KeyBank. Here's why:\n\n1. First call NYSDOL to make sure your claim is still active\n2. Then call KeyBank card services to request a replacement\n\nIf you just call KeyBank, they might issue a card but it won't work if there's an issue with your claim. And no, they definitely don't automatically send new cards for closed accounts - that would be a security risk.

This is only partially correct. If the account was closed due to suspected fraud, NYSDOL will automatically issue a new card after their investigation is complete (usually 7-10 business days). But for all other reasons, yes, calling is required.

I spent TWO WEEKS trying to get through to someone about my card after my account closed!!! The unemployment phone lines are IMPOSSIBLE!!! Ended up going in circles and getting hung up on over and over. Almost missed my rent payment because of it.

I had the same experience trying to reach NYSDOL about my card issue last month. After three days of constant calling and getting nowhere, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an agent in about 25 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE \n\nIt was the only way I could get my card situation resolved. The agent told me they've been having system issues with KeyBank accounts all year.

my friend said if u go to the office in person they can help u right away with card stuff but idk if thats true

This is incorrect. NY Career Centers no longer handle KeyBank card issues in person. All debit card matters must be handled by phone. They'll just direct you to call the same numbers if you show up in person.

Update: I finally got through to someone at KeyBank after trying for 2 days. They said my account was closed because of

Your message got cut off - what did KeyBank say was the reason for the closure? That info would be super helpful for others dealing with similar issues!

I went through this exact situation last month! My account got closed out of nowhere too. Here's what I learned: you definitely need to call both numbers that Sienna mentioned. I called NYSDOL first (took forever to get through) and they told me the closure was on KeyBank's end for "security reasons." Then I called KeyBank and had to verify my identity with like 10 different questions before they would even discuss sending a new card. The whole process took about 12 business days from start to finish. Pro tip: call KeyBank early in the morning (like 8am) - way shorter wait times than afternoon calls.
