Hate to break it to you but the entire ny unemployment system is a complete disaster right now. The scammers know it's nearly impossible to reach anyone by phone, which gives them more time to steal benefits before you can report it. So frustrating 😡
If you don't take any action, heres what will likely happen: the scammers will get your benefits on their fake card, and when you finally get through to unemployment to report the issue, they'll freeze your account for investigation which can take 8-12 weeks to resolve. DONT WAIT, find a way to speak to a representative IMMEDIATELY.
That timeline is terrifying. I can't go 8-12 weeks without this money. Has anyone successfully reported fraud and had it resolved quickly?
The key is reporting it before any payments go out. If you catch it early, they can stop the payments to the fraudulent card and redirect to your correct payment method. But you absolutely must speak to someone.
Have u tried calling ur bank? Sometimes they can see pending ACH transfers even if ReliaCard says it went thru. My bank (Chase) was able to tell me my transfer was stuck in some kind of verification hold and they helped push it thru.
so frustrating!!!! i switched to just withdrawing cash at the ATM and closing my ReliaCard account. i dont trust them anymore after they "lost" my money twice. the whole ny unemployment system is designed to make everything as difficult as possible i swear
OK heres what u need to do - happened to me & my roomate both. The BIG mistake is trying to create a NEW id.me account. Instead: 1) Go to id.me and click "sign in" 2) Click "forgot password" and use your email 3) They'll send reset link 4) Once in, immediately go to security settings 5) Turn on ALL security features (2-factor) 6) Go to help section, report account compromised 7) They'll walk you through recovery process Basically you need to RECOVER the fraudulent account not make a new one. Then id.me will give you docs to send to NY unemployment showing you're the real person.
OMG THANK YOU!! I just tried this and it worked - I was able to reset the password and get into the account. Now I need to contact ID.me support to help clean it up, but at least I'm in!
Awesome! Just make sure you take screenshots of EVERYTHING in there before you report it compromised. You'll need that evidence for your NY claim.
Unfortunately this is happening EVERYWHERE right now. My advice after going through this nightmare myself: 1. First priority is getting control of your ID.me account following what @profile14 suggested 2. Call NY unemployment ONLY using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - saved me 3+ hours of hold time 3. Request to speak with a supervisor immediately - regular agents CAN'T help with this 4. Have all documentation ready: police report, FTC report, credit freeze confirmations 5. Be extremely persistent! Don't take no for an answer! 6. If supervisor says they can't help, hang up and try again (seriously) 7. Once you get the right person, they can override the ID.me issue It took me 5 calls but I finally got someone who knew exactly what to do. They have a specific procedure for cross-state identity theft cases, but most agents don't know about it. Only supervisors or the fraud department can help. Don't waste time with regular agents. Also - immediately check if tax returns were filed in your name! This is usually the next step in the scam after unemployment fraud. Get an IP PIN from the IRS ASAP.
THANK YOU for the detailed advice! I just booked a callback through claimyr and I'm going to follow your steps exactly. Did you have to submit any special forms or just talk to the supervisor?
You might need to verify your identity again. A lot of accounts got flagged for extra verification recently because of all the fraud. Check your email spam folder - they might have sent you a link to verify.
Checked all my emails including spam, nothing from them in weeks. Last message was confirming my ID.me verification was complete.
I've been dealing with ny unemployment for 2 years now and honestly the only reliable way to get help is either 1) know somebody who works there or 2) use a service like claimyr.com to get through the phone lines. Everything else is just wasting time sadly.
This! The system is designed to be frustrating so people give up. It's like a test of persistence.

pro tip: always keep an emergency buffer of at least one week's worth of benefits if possible. holidays, system glitches, and random payment holds happen ALL THE TIME with ny unemployment. saved my butt numerous times.
