How to access funds from NY unemployment virtual debit card?
I just received a virtual debit card from the unemployment office yesterday. Was expecting a direct deposit but got this virtual card instead. Has about $2,350 on it. I need to pay my rent that's due in 3 days but have no idea how to actually get cash off this thing. Can I transfer it to my bank account? Can I withdraw from an ATM somehow without having a physical card? The website is super confusing and doesn't explain this clearly. Anyone else figure out how to get real cash from these virtual cards? I tried calling their customer service but was on hold for over an hour before giving up.

You can link the virtual card to your PayPal or Venmo and transfer money that way. That's what I did. Just add it as a payment method and then transfer to your bank account. Takes about 2-3 days though, so might be cutting it close for your rent.

•Thank you! I just tried that and it's asking for CVV and expiration date. Did they email that info to you or did you have to call?

•Should be in the same email or portal where you got the card info. Look for a separate attachment or page that has all the card details. Thats where mine was.

•Be careful with paypal transfers, they sometimes hold funds for review which could delay things.

I was stuck in the same situation last month. After struggling for days trying to reach someone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a live agent at unemployment in about 20 minutes. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast and they helped me set up a direct deposit instead of using that annoying card. Check out this video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

•Does this actually work? Seems too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at ny unemployment

•yeah it worked for me! i was super skeptical too but was desperate after trying to call for like 2 weeks straight. they just call for you and then connect you when someone picks up.

•I mean all they do is call for you and stay on hold so you don't have to. When a human picks up, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me hours of listening to that awful hold music 😂

•My cousin used it last week and said it worked. I'm gonna try it tomorrow cuz I'm tired of calling and getting nowhere

You can call the number on the back of the virtual card info and request a physical card to be mailed to you. They'll rush it in 7-10 business days. I know that doesn't help with your immediate rent issue though.

If you have CashApp, you can add the card to that and then transfer to your bank account or even use the CashApp card to withdraw from ATMs. That's what worked for me with my tourism card.

•That's a good idea! Do you remember if there were any fees for doing it that way?

•Standard cashapp fees apply which I think is like 1.5% for instant transfer. If you do the free transfer it takes 1-3 business days but no fees.

The tourism cards are THE WORST. I got mine in April and had so many issues. Here's what I learned after way too much time dealing with this: 1. You CAN transfer to a bank account through their website but it's hidden under 'Card Management' then 'Transfer Funds' - takes 3-5 business days 2. Many banks let you cash advance from the card but they'll charge around $5-10 fee 3. If you need cash NOW, find someone you trust who has Venmo/CashApp, pay them using your virtual card, and have them give you cash or send it back to your main account 4. Call and request a physical card ASAP for future use 5. If the website keeps giving you errors (it did for me constantly), try a different browser - Safari worked when Chrome didn't 6. If all else fails, call them using claimyr.com - it's the only way I finally got someone to help walk me through fixing my account Hope this helps! The system is a complete mess but there are ways to get your money.

•This is SUPER helpful thank you!! Gonna try the bank account transfer option right now.

•Do NOT try the Venmo/friend option if you need the full amount. Venmo has transaction limits for new cards!

•Good point about Venmo limits! Should have mentioned that. Also forgot to say some ATMs can give you a temporary card number for withdrawal but it's rare.

You can go to any bank (doesn't have to be your bank) and do a cash advance from the virtual card. Just bring your ID and the card details. They might charge a fee but you'll get cash right away.

•Call them!! Don't wait. I was in the same boat and waiting did nothing. I finally called using claimyr.com and got it fixed in one call.

I googled this same problem last month when I got my card. Apparently there's a way to set up mobile wallet (Apple/Google pay) with the virtual card and use it at stores that accept tap payments. Doesn't help with rent but at least you can buy groceries while figuring out the transfer stuff.

•That's a good temporary solution, thanks! At least I can buy food while I figure out the rent situation.

Why don't you just use it to pay bills directly? Most landlords accept debit card payments now (even if they charge a small fee). Probably easier than trying to get cash.

•My landlord is super old school and only takes checks or cash unfortunately. Still living in the 90s I guess 🙄

•Ah that sucks. Maybe buy a money order at the post office using the card? Should be able to use it like any debit card there.

the ny unemployment system is such a joke. first they take 2 months to approve benefits, then they send funds on these garbage cards that nobody knows how to use. im in ur same boat and ended up just using it for all my purchases and using my regular paycheck for rent.

This happened to me too! If you have a physical bank branch nearby, go in person with your ID and the card info. Tell them you need a cash advance against the card. I was able to get $2000 out that way (max daily limit) and just paid the $10 fee. Chase did it for me no problem even though I don't bank with them.

•That's brilliant! There's a Chase right down the street from me. Gonna try this tomorrow morning, thank you!
