Anyone else having issues cashing their ny unemployment debit card check?

I finally received my unemployment benefits through a ReliaCard debit card last month after waiting for almost 8 weeks. I decided to transfer some of the money (about $840) to my regular checking account since I needed to pay rent. The transfer seemed to go through fine according to the app, but it's been 17 days and the money still hasn't shown up in my bank account! I called ReliaCard customer service at least 6 times, and each time they give me different answers. First they said it takes 3-5 business days, then they said there might be a verification hold, then they blamed my bank. My bank says they don't even see any pending transfers from ReliaCard. I'm absolutely fuming because I need this money desperately and I'm getting the runaround from everyone. Has anyone else had this problem with transferring from the unemployment debit card? Is there something I'm missing or a trick to make this work faster? I'm about to give up and just withdraw cash from ATMs at this point even though the fees are ridiculous.

Same exact problem here! I tried to transfer $720 to my checking and it's been like 3 weeks with nothing. When i called they said 'system issue' and to wait another 7-10 days. How tf are we supposed to pay bills when they hold our money hostage? The whole system is garbage.

Did they at least tell you if the money would eventually come through? I can't even get a straight answer on that 😤

they CLAIM it will but who knows at this point. i've heard some people saying they never got their transfers and had to file some kinda dispute. this is insane

The system isn't just garbage, it's a dumpster fire inside a landfill during a heat wave 🔥🗑️

After dealing with the same transfer nightmares for weeks, I finally found a solution! I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a live unemployment agent who could actually help. They fixed my card issue in one call and even backdated my payments. Talking to an agent got my $ unlocked so fast - wish I'd known about this earlier! Check out their process: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

wait does this actually work? I'm so desperate at this point I'll try anything 😩

Yeah it worked for me! The agent I got connected with said a lot of people are having this exact ReliaCard transfer problem. They put in some kind of override that fixed it.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different?

It's not a service that tries to fix your unemployment itself - they just get you through to an actual person at unemployment who can fix it. That's what made it work for me when nothing else did.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol

I get the skepticism! I felt the same way. But I literally got my money 2 days after talking to the agent they connected me with. Otherwise I'd still be waiting on endless hold.

Pro tip that worked for me: Instead of transferring to your bank, get cash back when making a purchase with the card. I buy a pack of gum for $1 at CVS and ask for $200 cash back (their max). No fees, and you can do this a few times if you need more. Way faster than waiting for transfers that never come.

This is actually really smart, I'm going to try this tomorrow. Does any store work or just certain ones?

0 coins

Most grocery stores and pharmacies work. Walmart, Target, CVS all let you do $200 cash back. Some smaller places only do $40-100 tho.

I do this at Walgreens every week! Way better than waiting on these stupid transfers.

THE ENTIRE RELIACARD SYSTEM IS A SCAM. They make $$$ on all the fees and holding our money. Why can't NY unemployment just direct deposit like a normal state??? I'm convinced they get kickbacks from this garbage card company. I've had THREE transfers vanish into the void over the past 2 months.

Here's what finally worked for me with the ReliaCard transfer problems. You need to speak directly with a tier 2 support specialist at NYSDOL who can process a transfer override. Regular customer service can't help with this. I spent weeks trying to resolve this on my own with no luck. The regular ReliaCard customer service just gives script responses and can't actually fix anything technical. The unemployment office phone lines are basically impossible to get through on your own. Finally I used claimyr.com which got me through to an actual unemployment agent who knew exactly what to do. They said this is a known issue affecting hundreds of people right now - something about a verification system malfunction between ReliaCard and certain banks. The agent filed what they called a "payment reconciliation request" that forced the transfer through. My money appeared in my bank account 36 hours later. If you're dealing with this nightmare, talking to a real agent is the only solution that actually works. Save yourself the weeks of stress and just get through to someone who can actually help. It was the best money I've ever spent to finally get my benefits paid quickly.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! I've been so confused about why nobody can give me straight answers.

Amina Sow

not falling for another unemployment 'hack'... these never work

0 coins

It's not a hack - it's literally just getting through to the people who are supposed to be helping us anyway. The system is deliberately designed to be impossible to reach.

THIS!!! 👆 I wasted 2 months trying to DIY this before finally getting an agent to fix it in 10 minutes.

I had the same problemm last year. The transfers would take FOREVER or just disapear. I started using the ATM at my bank to withdraw cash and then just deposit it right away at the counter. Its annoying but atleast its instant.

Doesn't the ATM charge a fee though? I'm already broke enough 😩

0 coins

There is a $2.50 fee per withdrawal but its better than waiting weeks for a transfer that might never come tbh

some credit unions reimburse atm fees if u have an account with them fyi

ReliaCard is the absolute WORST. When I had issues similar to yours, I finally got help by filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). It's free to file online, and banks/card issuers have to respond within 15 days. Like magic, my "lost" transfer of $1200 suddenly appeared in my account 3 days after filing the complaint.

This is great advice. The CFPB doesn't mess around and financial institutions know it.

I'll try this too! Do you have a link to where I can file?

Here you go: consumerfinance.gov/complaint - just select prepaid card as the product type

I called both my bank and ReliaCard and neither would help. Finally got someone at ny unemployment through claimyr.com who explained theres a system error affecting transfers. She put in some kind of priority fix, and I got my money 2 days later. Worth it not to spend another month fighting with these people.

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this?

0 coins

Yeah I actually did. Was desperate after 6 weeks of runaround from ReliaCard. The unemployment person told me they're getting tons of calls about this exact same problem.

0 coins

Have u tried calling ur bank? Sometimes they can see pending ACH transfers even if ReliaCard says it went thru. My bank (Chase) was able to tell me my transfer was stuck in some kind of verification hold and they helped push it thru.

0 coins

I called them twice and they said they don't see anything from ReliaCard at all, not even pending 😕

0 coins

so frustrating!!!! i switched to just withdrawing cash at the ATM and closing my ReliaCard account. i dont trust them anymore after they "lost" my money twice. the whole ny unemployment system is designed to make everything as difficult as possible i swear
