How long does it take to get a paper check from NYS Department of Labor unemployment?
I had to switch from direct deposit to paper checks because my bank account got closed unexpectedly. I changed it in my my.ny.gov account last Tuesday and certified my weekly claim on Sunday like usual. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for NYS Department of Labor to mail out the paper checks? I'm getting worried because rent is due next week and I really need that payment.

Paper checks from NYS Department of Labor usually take 7-10 business days from the time you certify your weekly claim. Since you just switched from direct deposit, there might be an additional processing delay of 1-2 days for the first paper check while they update your payment method in the system.

•Thanks! So if I certified Sunday, I should expect it sometime next week then? That would be perfect timing.

i switched to paper checks last month and it took almost 2 weeks for the first one to show up. after that they came pretty regularly in about 8-9 days. the delay is real when you first switch payment methods

The official timeframe is 7-10 business days, but I've seen people get their checks anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks depending on mail delivery in their area. NYS Department of Labor sends them out pretty consistently, but USPS can be unpredictable. You can check your payment history on my.ny.gov to see when they actually issued the check.

•Good idea about checking the payment history! I'll look for that section in my account.

•Where exactly do you find the payment history? I've been looking all over my my.ny.gov account and can't find it anywhere.

If you're really worried about getting through to someone at NYS Department of Labor to check on your payment status, I used a service called Claimyr recently that actually got me connected to an agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to get answers about my payment processing time when I couldn't get through on my own.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that. How much does something like that cost?

•They don't require any personal info upfront which was nice. The value was definitely worth it for me since I'd been trying to call for weeks with no luck.

The whole paper check system is so outdated!!! Why can't they just do instant transfers like every other modern system? I've been waiting 12 days for mine and still nothing. This is ridiculous in 2025.

•I feel you on that. My check took forever too but it did eventually show up.

One thing to keep in mind - if you switched payment methods mid-week or after certifying, the change might not take effect until your next certification period. Double-check in your my.ny.gov account under 'Payment Information' to make sure the paper check option is actually showing as active.
