NYS Department of Labor unemployment payment timing - when will I get paid?

I filed my unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor about 10 days ago and it says approved but I still haven't received any money. My weekly claim certification went through fine on Sunday but my bank account is still empty. Does anyone know how long it usually takes for NYS Department of Labor to actually send the payment after you certify? I'm getting really stressed about my rent being due next week.

Unemployment payments from NYS Department of Labor typically arrive 2-3 business days after you certify your weekly claim, assuming there are no issues with your claim. Since you certified on Sunday, you should see the deposit by Wednesday or Thursday. Make sure your direct deposit information is correct in your my.ny.gov account. If it's been longer than that, there might be an adjudication issue holding up your payments.

Thanks! I double checked and my bank info looks right. I'll wait until Thursday and see if it shows up.

If your payment doesn't come by Friday, you'll want to call NYS Department of Labor to check if there's a payment issue. The problem is getting through - their phone lines are constantly busy. I had good luck using Claimyr.com to get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of redialing.

It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly when you're waiting on hundreds of dollars in benefits, getting through to resolve payment issues quickly pays for itself.

The NYS Department of Labor payment system is so frustrating! Sometimes it takes forever for no reason. I once had to wait 2 weeks for a payment that should have come right away. Make sure you keep certifying every week even if the payments are delayed - you don't want to lose any weeks.

Good point, I'll definitely keep certifying. Did you ever find out why yours was delayed?

They said it was some kind of verification hold but nobody could explain what needed to be verified. It just randomly cleared up.

Check your claim status online - if it shows any kind of pending issue or adjudication in progress, that's what's holding up your payment. Also make sure you're not missing any required job search activities that could trigger a payment hold.

I went through the same thing a few months ago! The first payment is usually the slowest because they're still processing everything on the backend even though it shows "approved" online. Like others said, 2-3 business days after certification is normal, but the very first one can take up to a week. Don't panic yet - if you certified Sunday, give it until Friday before calling. One thing that helped me was setting up text alerts through my bank so I'd know immediately when the deposit hit instead of constantly checking my account.

That's really helpful advice about the text alerts! I didn't know banks could do that. I've been obsessively checking my account every few hours which is just making me more anxious. I'll set that up right now so I can stop constantly refreshing my banking app. Thanks for the reassurance that the first payment being slower is normal - that makes me feel a lot better about waiting until Friday before panicking.
