How long does it take for unemployment to kick in after filing with NYS Department of Labor?
Filed my unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor about 10 days ago and still haven't received any payments. My claim status shows as approved but when I check my account there's no payment information yet. I'm starting to stress because I have rent due next week. For those who've been through this process, how long does it typically take for unemployment benefits to actually kick in after you file? I did my weekly claim certification on Sunday but nothing has shown up in my account.

The standard waiting period is typically 1-2 weeks after your claim is approved for the first payment to process. Since you filed 10 days ago and your claim shows approved, you should see your first payment within the next few days. Make sure you've completed your weekly claim certification - that's required to trigger payments. Also check that your direct deposit information is correct in your my.ny.gov account.

mine took almost 3 weeks to get the first payment even though my claim was approved quickly, then after that it came every week like clockwork. the first one always seems to take forever

If you're still waiting and need to speak with someone at NYS Department of Labor, I had success using a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) when I couldn't get through on the phone. ugh the waiting is the WORST part!! I remember pacing around my apartment checking my bank account every few hours when I was waiting for my first payment. hang in there, it will come through
