Was a bit nervous or untrusting at first, but my calls went thru. Is depression a disability for unemployment benefits in NY - need help understanding eligibility

I've been dealing with severe depression for the past few months and it's gotten to the point where I can't handle my retail job anymore. My doctor says I need to take time off work but I'm not sure if this qualifies me for unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor. Does anyone know if depression counts as a disability that would make me eligible? I'm worried about being denied because I technically quit my job, but it wasn't really by choice if that makes sense. Has anyone been through something similar with mental health issues?

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been fighting with them for months over my anxiety disorder and they keep asking for more and more paperwork. Even with multiple doctors saying I can't work they still want to drag it out. Don't get your hopes up that this will be easy or quick.

Why do I have to reopen my unemployment claim - NYS Department of Labor requirements?

I'm really confused about why the NYS Department of Labor is making me reopen my claim. I was collecting unemployment for about 8 weeks earlier this year, then got a temporary job that lasted 3 months. Now that job ended and when I tried to file my weekly claim, the system is telling me I need to reopen my claim instead of just continuing where I left off. I thought once you had an active claim you could just keep filing weekly? Is this normal or did something go wrong with my account? I'm worried this is going to delay my payments.

The NYS Department of Labor system is so confusing about this stuff!! Why can't they just explain it clearly instead of making us guess what we're supposed to do? I spent hours on the phone trying to figure out the difference between reopening and filing a new claim.

I'm trying to figure out my taxes and I'm confused about which unemployment payments I received from NYS Department of Labor are actually taxable for federal unemployment tax purposes. I got regular UI benefits, some back pay from an appeal that was approved, and also received partial benefits while working part-time. My accountant is asking me to clarify which of these different types of payments count as taxable income. Has anyone dealt with this before? I want to make sure I'm reporting everything correctly to avoid problems with the IRS.

Yes, partial unemployment benefits are still unemployment compensation for tax purposes. It doesn't matter that you were working part-time - any UI benefits paid by NYS Department of Labor are taxable income that must be reported on your federal return.

Filed my UI claim two weeks ago and it's still showing as pending on my.ny.gov. I lost my job at a restaurant in Brooklyn when they cut staff last month. I've been certifying weekly but haven't received any payments yet. The status just says 'claim under review' with no other details. I really need to know when this will get approved because I have rent due next week. Has anyone else experienced delays like this? What's the typical timeframe for NYS Department of Labor to approve a new claim?

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 3 WEEKS for mine to be approved and every time I call I get hung up on. They owe me over $1200 in back payments and I'm about to lose my apartment. This is ridiculous that they can just hold our money hostage like this.

Obviously I'm grateful for the benefits but I keep wondering who actually loses out when people like me are on unemployment? Is it just taxpayers funding it or do businesses pay more? And what about the economy overall? I'm genuinely curious about the bigger picture here since I've never really understood how the whole NYS Department of Labor system gets funded. Anyone know how this actually works?

Small businesses get hit the hardest by unemployment costs. We had to lay off 3 people during COVID and our unemployment insurance rates went through the roof. It's like being punished twice - first you lose revenue and have to cut staff, then you pay higher taxes for years because of those layoffs. The NYS Department of Labor doesn't care that you had no choice.

There are actually provisions for economic layoffs that don't impact your experience rating as much as firing for cause. You might want to check with your accountant about whether those layoffs were properly classified.

That's an oversimplification. Most people on unemployment worked for years and paid into the system before claiming benefits. It's more like insurance than welfare.
