ID.me Lockout: Can't Access Transcript (Lost Phone + Authentication Issues)
Been trying to check my transcript but completely locked out of id.me. Lost my old phone with the authentication app and forgot my password. Starting to get really frustrated with this whole process. Anyone know how to get back in?

There are several ways to regain access to your ID.me account. First, go to ID.me's recovery page and click 'forgot password'. If you can't complete phone verification, you'll need to do a video call verification with an ID.me trusted referee. Make sure you have a government-issued photo ID ready. The video call usually takes 5-10 minutes.

•Its usually available 24/7 but you might have to wait in a virtual line depending on how busy they are

Hey! While your working on the ID.me stuff, you might want to check out taxr.ai - its this new tool that analyzes transcripts and tells you exactly whats going on with your refund. Only costs a buck and its way better than trying to decode everything yourself. https://taxr.ai

Pro tip: while ur waiting to get back in, you can also request your transcript by mail. Takes like 5-10 days but at least its a backup plan

If the video call doesn't work out, you can also try calling ID.me support directly at 1-844-484-3963. They're usually pretty helpful with account recovery issues. Also make sure to write down your backup codes once you get back in so this doesn't happen again!

•Good advice about the backup codes! I learned that the hard way too. Also just wanted to add that when you do the video call, make sure you're in a well-lit room - they need to see your ID clearly. Had a friend who got rejected twice because of poor lighting 😅

Ugh, I feel your pain! Just went through this exact same nightmare last month. The video call with ID.me is definitely your best bet - it's frustrating but it works. Make sure you have good lighting and your ID ready. Also, once you get back in, immediately set up multiple backup authentication methods so you don't get stuck like this again. The whole system is such a pain but unfortunately it's what we're stuck with for now.

•@Abigail Patel Thanks for sharing your experience! Quick question - how long did you have to wait in the video call queue when you did it? And did they ask for any additional documents besides just the photo ID? Want to make sure I have everything ready before I start the process.

I went through this same headache a few weeks ago! The video call verification is definitely your fastest option - I waited about 15 minutes in the queue but it was worth it. Just make sure you're in a quiet, well-lit room and have your driver's license or state ID ready. They might also ask for a utility bill or bank statement to verify your address, so have those handy too. Once you're back in, definitely enable multiple backup methods like backup codes and add a secondary email. The whole ID.me system is frustrating but unfortunately necessary for IRS access these days.

•@Nina Fitzgerald That s'really helpful info about the utility bill and bank statement! I didn t'realize they might ask for address verification too. Better to be over-prepared than have to do this whole process again. Did you have any issues with the secondary email setup afterwards? Want to make sure I get all the backup methods set up properly once I m'back in.

Just went through this same situation a couple months ago - so frustrating! The video call verification is definitely your best option. I'd recommend having your driver's license, a recent utility bill, and maybe a bank statement ready just in case they ask for address verification. The wait time can vary but it's usually not too bad, and the whole process takes about 10-15 minutes once you're connected. Also, pro tip: once you get back in, immediately download and save your backup recovery codes somewhere safe - learned that lesson the hard way! Good luck with getting back in!

•@Benjamin Carter Thanks for the detailed advice! Quick question - where exactly do you find the backup recovery codes once you re'logged back in? I want to make sure I don t'miss that step this time around. Also, did they accept a bank statement as address verification or do they specifically need a utility bill?

Been there! Had this exact same issue a few months back. The video verification with ID.me is definitely your quickest solution - just make sure you have good lighting and your driver's license ready. Sometimes they ask for additional address verification like a utility bill, so having that on hand doesn't hurt. The wait times aren't usually too bad, maybe 10-20 minutes depending on the time of day. Once you get back in, definitely set up those backup authentication methods immediately! I also recommend writing down your backup codes and storing them somewhere secure. It's a pain but unfortunately this is the system we're stuck with for IRS transcript access.

•@Fatima Al-Sayed This is super helpful! I m'definitely going to try the video verification today. One thing I m'wondering - do you remember if they accept a mobile driver s'license like (on your phone or) do they specifically need the physical card? I have both but want to make sure I m'using whichever one works best for the verification process.

I actually had this exact same problem about 6 months ago! The video verification is definitely the way to go - it's frustrating but it works. When I did it, they accepted my physical driver's license just fine, but I'd recommend having the physical card ready since some verification agents can be picky about mobile versions. The whole process took about 20 minutes including wait time. One thing that really saved me later was setting up an authenticator app on TWO different devices once I got back in, plus downloading those backup codes everyone mentioned. Also, if you're really in a rush for your transcript, you can call the IRS directly at 800-908-9946 and request it over the phone - they'll mail it to you, but at least you don't have to wait for the ID.me issue to be resolved first.

•@Ryan Young That s'really smart about setting up the authenticator on two devices! I never thought of doing that as a backup. Quick question - when you called the IRS directly at that number, did they ask for any specific information to verify your identity before mailing the transcript? Want to know what to have ready if I decide to go that route while waiting to get the ID.me sorted out.

Had the exact same issue happen to me last year! The video verification is definitely your best bet - just went through it myself recently. Make sure you have good lighting, your physical driver's license (not the mobile version), and maybe a utility bill just in case they ask for address verification. The wait is usually 10-20 minutes but totally worth it. Once you're back in, IMMEDIATELY set up multiple backup methods - I learned this the hard way! You can set up backup codes, add a secondary email, and even set up the authenticator app on multiple devices. Also, if you need your transcript urgently while dealing with this, you can request it by mail through the IRS website or call them directly. It takes longer but at least you have options. Good luck getting back in - the whole ID.me system is a pain but unfortunately it's what we're stuck with for now!

•@Harper Collins This is really comprehensive advice, thank you! I m'definitely going to try the video verification first thing tomorrow. Quick question - when you say multiple "devices for" the authenticator app, do you mean like phone + tablet, or can you set it up on a computer too? Also, did the IRS ask for your SSN and other personal info when you called them directly for the transcript? Just want to be prepared with all the right documents ready.

I just went through this exact nightmare a couple weeks ago! The video verification is absolutely your best option - it's annoying but it actually works pretty quickly. Make sure you have your physical driver's license ready (they can be picky about mobile versions) and do it in a well-lit room. I waited about 15 minutes in the queue but the actual verification only took 5-10 minutes. The agent was really helpful and walked me through everything. Once you get back in, immediately go to your security settings and set up backup codes - download them and save them somewhere safe! I also added a backup email and set up the authenticator app on both my phone and tablet just in case. It's such a pain that we have to deal with this system but unfortunately it's the only way to access IRS stuff online these days. You got this! 💪

•@Aria Washington Thanks so much for all the detailed info! This gives me hope that I can actually get this sorted out. One quick question - when you set up the authenticator app on both your phone and tablet, did you have to go through any special process or did it just let you add multiple devices right away? I want to make sure I don t'mess anything up once I finally get back into my account. Also really appreciate the tip about doing it in a well-lit room - definitely don t'want to get rejected because of poor lighting!
