Lost ID.me password & old phone number - How to access IRS account?

Hey everyone, I'm having a real headache with my ID.me account. I lost my password and to make matters worse, I no longer have access to the phone number linked to my account. I need to get into my account to deal with some IRS stuff. Has anyone else run into this problem? Any advice on how to handle this with the IRS? I'm kinda freaking out here.

Ugh, been there done that. It's a real pain in the butt. Have you tried contacting ID.me support directly? They might be able to help you update your info without going through the IRS.

I haven't tried that yet. Good idea, I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

ID.me support is hit or miss tbh. Sometimes theyre super helpful, other times its like talking to a brick wall 🧱

True that. But worth a try before dealing with the IRS nightmare lol

I found a method to get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

How long did it take for them to get someone on the line?

It took about 2 hours for me, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music the whole time. They just called me when an agent was ready.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Call the IRS and explain your situation. Be prepared with your SSN and any other identifying info. 2. Ask them to verify your identity through alternative means since you can't access ID.me. 3. They might ask you security questions or request additional documentation. 4. Once verified, ask them to help you update your ID.me info or provide an alternative way to access your account. 5. If all else fails, request a mail-in option for whatever you need to do. Remember, stay calm and be patient. The IRS folks can actually be pretty helpful if you're nice to them. Good luck!

This is solid advice. I'd add: take notes during the call! You might need to reference the convo later.

Have you tried creating a new ID.me account with your current phone number? Then you could try linking that to your IRS account.

I didn't even think of that! I'll give it a try, thanks for the suggestion.

Be careful with this. Creating multiple accounts might flag you in the system. Proceed with caution.

Honestly, the whole ID.me system is garbage. I miss the old days when you could just call and talk to a human being without jumping through 50 hoops 😤

Pro tip: If you can't get through on the phone, try reaching out to your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help navigate tricky situations like this.

I've never heard of that before. How do I find my local Taxpayer Advocate Service?

Just google 'Taxpayer Advocate Service' + your state. They should have contact info on their website. They're a lifesaver!

Another option to consider: if you have your old tax returns or W-2s handy, the IRS can sometimes verify your identity using info from those documents instead of relying on ID.me. When you call, ask specifically about alternative identity verification methods. I had a similar issue last year and they were able to walk me through it using my prior year AGI and some other basic info. Takes longer but it works!

This is really good to know! I definitely have my old tax returns saved. Did they ask for specific line items from your return, or just the AGI? And about how long did the whole verification process take once you got someone on the phone?
