IRS account access issues: Can't reset password or get PIN due to outdated phone number
I'm having trouble accessing my IRS account to get my PIN for filing taxes. I forgot my password and can't reset it because I changed my phone number. The IRS still sends verification messages to my old number. I tried using ID.me and submitted a ticket, but no response yet. Anyone else dealing with this? Any advice on how to get my PIN or update my contact info with the IRS?

It's not just the IRS. A lot of government websites are outdated and hard to navigate.

Ugh, been there done that. The IRS website is a nightmare to navigate. Have you tried calling them directly? It's a pain, but sometimes talking to a human is the only way to get things done.

I've been trying to call for days, but the wait times are insane. I can never get through 😫

Pro tip: call right when they open. You might have better luck getting through.

Also, consider calling around lunchtime. Sometimes the lines are less busy then.

This is why I always file my taxes early. Avoid the rush and these kinds of headaches. Just sayin' 🤷♂️

Not everyone has that luxury, my dude. Some of us are waiting on forms from employers or have complicated situations.

Have you considered visiting a local IRS office? They might be able to help you in person with updating your info and getting your PIN.

Plot twist: The IRS actually has great customer service, we've just been calling the wrong number this whole time 🤣🤣🤣

Have you tried reaching out to your local congressman's office? Sometimes they can help with IRS issues. Worth a shot!

That's a really good suggestion. They've been known to cut through bureaucracy in some cases.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/IDKN1SpQoEI

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of waiting on hold. Worth every penny imo.

While $20 might be a good investment for some, others may prefer to stick with traditional methods or try to get through on their own.

I had a similar issue last year. Here's what worked for me: 1. Go to the IRS "Get Transcript" page 2. Choose the mail option (since you can't verify online) 3. They'll send your transcript to your address on file 4. Use the AGI from the transcript to file your taxes It takes a bit longer, but it's a workaround if you can't access your account.

In dealing with IRS account access issues, especially related to phone number changes, it's crucial to explore all available methods for resolution. First, try reaching out via phone, but as many have noted, the wait times can be burdensome. Calling during off-peak hours or when they first open can improve the chances of connecting with a representative. Alternatively, visiting a local IRS office could provide direct assistance. For those unable to resolve issues through these methods, services like Claimyr offer a modern solution by navigating phone menus and holding on your behalf, potentially saving time and frustration, albeit at a cost. While such services can be a godsend for some, they may not be a feasible option for everyone. If you are seeking a no-cost alternative, using the IRS mail option to receive necessary documents or enlisting the help of the Taxpayer Advocate Service can also be beneficial. Maintaining updated contact information with the IRS is vital, but when changes are necessary, addressing them promptly through available channels will help prevent future complications.

Pro tip: Keep a detailed log of all your attempts to contact the IRS (dates, times, who you spoke to). It can come in handy if you need to prove you've been trying to resolve the issue.

Anyone else miss the good old days when you could just mail in your tax forms and be done with it? No PINs, no online accounts, no hassle 👴

Hey OP, if you're still stuck, try reaching out to the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They're an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers resolve issues. They've saved my butt more than once!

Friendly reminder that if you're having trouble filing, you can always file for an extension! It's better than missing the deadline completely.
