Need help getting new IRS PIN after identity theft - forgot last year's PIN
Hey everyone, I'm dealing with some identity theft issues and I need to get my IRS PIN for this year's taxes. I had one last year but I can't remember it at all. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What should I expect when I call the IRS about this?

Ugh, identity theft is the worst. I've been there. When you call the IRS, make sure you have all your identity verification docs ready. They'll probably ask for your previous case number too, so try to dig that up if you can. Good luck!

•Thanks for the advice! Do you remember how long the whole process took? I'm worried about getting this sorted before the tax deadline.

•It took me about 2-3 weeks to get everything sorted out. But that was pre-covid, so idk if its different now. Might wanna file for an extension just in case 🤷♂️

•2-3 weeks? You got lucky! It took me almost 2 months to get my PIN last year. The IRS is so backed up its ridiculous 🙄

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit? Has anyone else tried it?

•Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

•$20 to skip the hold? That's highway robbery! 😤 The goverment should fix their broken system instead of us having to pay extra.

•I get it, but my time is worth more than $20/hour. Plus, the stress of waiting on hold is just not worth it to me. To each their own tho 🤷♀️

Here's what you need to do to get a new IRS Identity Protection PIN: 1. Call the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800-908-4490 2. Explain that you've forgotten your previous PIN and need a new one 3. Have ready: - Your Social Security number - Last year's tax return - This year's tax return (if you've prepared it) - A government-issued ID 4. They'll verify your identity and may ask additional questions 5. If everything checks out, they'll mail you a new PIN within 3-5 business days Remember, you can't get the PIN over the phone for security reasons. Also, if you e-file, you'll need this PIN to submit your return. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

•Great info! Just adding that if you can't get through on the phone, you can also request a PIN online through the IRS website. It's a bit buried in their site, but it's there.

•Preach! 🙌 It's like they're purposely making it difficult. And don't even get me started on how outdated their tech is...

Pro tip: If you're having trouble remembering your PIN in the future, consider using a secure password manager. I use one for all my important codes and it's been a game-changer!

I'm in the same boat, OP. Identity theft is no joke. I've been dealing with it for 2 years now. Make sure you also put a freeze on your credit reports if you haven't already. It's a pain, but it helps prevent further damage.

•Thanks for the tip! I did freeze my credit right after it happened. It's definitely been a hassle, but better safe than sorry.

Has anyone tried using the IRS2Go app? I heard you can request a PIN through that too, but I'm not sure how reliable it is.

•I tried it last year and it worked fine for me. The interface is a bit clunky, but it gets the job done. Just make sure you have a strong internet connection when you use it.
