IRS Identity Verification Notice: What to Expect When Calling?
Hey everyone, I just got a notice from the IRS and I need to verify my identity. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What should I expect when I call them? Any tips or advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, I went through this last year. It's a pain in the butt, but not impossible. Make sure you have ALL your documents ready before you call. They'll ask for things like your social security card, driver's license, and recent tax returns. Oh, and be prepared to wait on hold for ages 🙄

•Ages is an understatement! I was on hold for 3 hours last week 😭

•Pro tip: call first thing in the morning when they open. I got through in about 30 minutes that way!

I found a way to skip the hold time! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

•Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

•How does it actually work? Do you have to give them your phone number?

•Yep, it's legit! You give them your number and they call you when an agent is on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

Just went through this last month. Here's what to expect: 1. They'll ask for your full name, SSN, and date of birth 2. They'll verify your address 3. They might ask about specific lines on your most recent tax return 4. Be ready to answer questions about your employment history 5. They may ask about any major life changes (marriage, kids, etc.) The whole process took about 30 minutes once I got through to someone. Good luck!

•This is super helpful, thank you so much! Did they ask for any specific documents?

•They didn't ask me to fax or mail anything, but having your tax returns and W-2s handy is a good idea just in case.

•It's to prevent identity theft, which is a huge problem. Better safe than sorry, IMO.

Quick question - does anyone know if this affects your refund if you're expecting one? I'm in the same boat and really need that money 😬

Pro tip: use the IRS2Go app to check your refund status. It won't help with the identity verification, but at least you can track your refund without calling!

•I prefer to think of it as a very boring video game where the final boss is a mountain of paperwork 🗻📄
