IRS Identity Verification Notice 4883C - What to expect and how to get through?
Hey everyone, I just got this IRS Identity Verification Notice 4883C in the mail. Has anyone dealt with this before? What should I expect when I call them? Any tips on getting through to a real person?

Ugh, I got one of those last year. It's a pain in the butt, but you gotta deal with it or they might hold up your refund. Make sure you have all your documents ready when you call - they'll ask for a bunch of info to verify your identity.

ā¢what kind of documents did they ask for? I'm nervous about giving out too much personal info over the phone š¬

ā¢They asked for stuff like my social security number, previous years' tax return info, and some questions about my current employment. It felt sketchy, but it's legit. Just make sure you're actually calling the IRS number on the notice.

ā¢I had to provide my drivers license number too. Took forever to find it lol

Good luck getting through to anyone at the IRS š I spent HOURS on hold last time I had to call them. It's ridiculous how understaffed they are.

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

ā¢Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

Here's what you need to know about the IRS Identity Verification Notice 4883C: ⢠It's a legitimate notice from the IRS to verify your identity ⢠You MUST respond, or your tax return processing will be delayed ⢠Call the toll-free number provided on the notice ⢠Have your prior year tax return, current year tax return, and the 4883C letter with you ⢠They'll ask personal questions to verify your identity ⢠Be prepared to answer questions about your employment, filing status, dependents, etc. ⢠The whole process usually takes about 15-30 minutes once you get through Pro tip: Call early in the morning or late in the evening for shorter wait times. And definitely consider using a service like the one mentioned above to avoid the hold time altogether. Good luck!

ā¢There are online fax services you can use. Might be worth a shot if the phone lines are jammed.

Just dealt with this last month. Here's a pro tip: when you call, immediately ask for a callback instead of waiting on hold. They'll take your number and call you back when an agent is available. Saved me a ton of time!

Anyone else feel like the IRS is stuck in the stone age? You'd think they'd have a better system for identity verification by now. Maybe use blockchain or something idk

ā¢Lmao imagine the IRS trying to use blockchain. They'd probably accidentally delete everyone's tax records š

PSA: Be careful of scams! Make sure you're calling the official IRS number on the notice. There are a lot of scammers out there trying to take advantage of people dealing with these notices.

ā¢Good point! My aunt almost fell for one of those scams last year. Always double-check the number!

Just want to add that when I went through this process, the IRS agent was actually pretty helpful once I got through. They walked me through each step and were patient with my questions. The whole thing took about 20 minutes, and my refund was released within a week after the call. Don't stress too much about it - it's really just a routine security check. The hardest part is honestly just getting someone on the phone!

ā¢That's really reassuring to hear! I was worried they'd be all grumpy and impatient, but sounds like they actually want to help once you get through. A week turnaround for the refund release isn't too bad either. Thanks for sharing your experience! š

I went through this exact same thing about 6 months ago! The notice looks super scary at first, but it's actually pretty straightforward once you get through to them. My biggest tip is to call right when they open at 7 AM - I got through in like 10 minutes vs the 2+ hours I waited when I called in the afternoon. Also, have your Social Security card handy because they asked for the exact issue date on mine, which I totally wasn't expecting. The agent was really nice and explained that they just flag returns that seem unusual (mine was because I moved states and had a big change in income). Whole process took maybe 25 minutes and my refund was processed within 5 days. You got this! šŖ

ā¢This is super helpful, thank you! š I was definitely freaking out when I first saw the notice - it looks so official and scary lol. The 7 AM tip is gold, I'm definitely going to try that. I never would have thought about having my Social Security card ready with the issue date either. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it makes me feel way less anxious about the whole thing!

Just wanted to chime in with my experience! I got the 4883C notice about 3 months ago and was totally panicking at first. But honestly, once I actually called (took me like 4 tries to get through lol), the whole thing was way less scary than I expected. The IRS rep was super professional and walked me through everything step by step. They asked for basic stuff like my SSN, filing status, and some questions about my previous year's return. The call took about 15 minutes and my refund was released 3 days later! My advice: don't put it off like I did - just rip the bandaid off and call. And definitely try that early morning calling tip someone mentioned above. Good luck! š

ā¢Thanks for sharing your experience! š It's so reassuring to hear that the IRS reps are actually helpful and professional. I was definitely imagining some grumpy government worker being super difficult with me lol. The 3-day turnaround for your refund release is amazing too! I keep putting off making the call because I'm nervous, but you're right - I should just get it over with. Did they ask you anything weird or unexpected, or was it pretty much just the standard verification stuff?
