Got IRS Identity Verification Notice 5071C - What to do? Help!
Hey everyone, I just got this IRS Identity Verification Notice 5071C in the mail and I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone dealt with this before? What's the process like? I'm kinda freaking out here.

Ugh, I got one of those last year. It's a pain but don't worry too much. Basically, the IRS just wants to make sure you are who you say you are. You'll need to verify your identity either online or by phone. Have you tried going to the IRS website? They should have instructions there.

•Thanks for the info! I haven't checked the website yet. Did you do it online or by phone? Was it pretty straightforward?

•I did mine online. It was pretty easy, just had to answer some questions about my financial history. Make sure you have your tax returns from the last couple years handy, they might ask about specific numbers from those.

•Online didn't work for me 😤 Had to call and was on hold FOREVER. Good luck OP!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

•Sounds sketchy. Is this legit? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

•I get the skepticism, but it's totally legit. I was desperate after being on hold for hours. The $20 was worth it to me to save time and stress. They even have a money-back guarantee if it doesn't work.

•How long did it take for them to get through? I might try this if it's faster than waiting on hold myself.

•It took about an hour for me, but I've heard it can vary. Still way better than doing it myself tho!

Listen up, folks. I've been through this rodeo before, so here's the 411 on dealing with the IRS Identity Verification Notice 5071C: 1. Don't panic! This is a standard procedure to prevent fraud. 2. You have two options: online or phone verification. 3. For online: - Go to idverify.irs.gov - You'll need your notice, SSN, filing status, and a copy of last year's tax return - Answer some questions about your financial history 4. For phone: - Call the number on your notice - Have your notice, this year's return, last year's return, and any other tax docs ready 5. Be patient! The IRS is swamped, so this might take time. 6. If you can't verify online or by phone, you may need to visit an IRS office in person. 7. After verification, it can take up to 9 weeks for your return to be processed. Remember, the IRS won't email or text you about this. If anyone contacts you claiming to be the IRS through those methods, it's a scam! Good luck, and may the tax gods be ever in your favor! 💪🏼

•Wow, thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! This really helps calm my nerves. I'll try the online option first and see how it goes.

•This is great info! Quick question - do you know if this affects your refund if you're expecting one? Will it be delayed?

•Yeah, unfortunately it can delay your refund. The IRS won't process your return until you've completed the verification process. Once you're verified, it can take up to 9 weeks for them to finish processing everything.

•It's to prevent identity theft and tax fraud. Better safe than sorry, IMO.

Has anyone had experience with using a tax professional for this? I'm wondering if it's worth hiring someone to handle it for me.

Just went thru this last month. My advice: gather ALL your docs before you start the process. I had to restart cuz I was missing some info and it was super frustrating. Also, if you filed jointly, make sure your spouse is available too - they asked questions only he could answer.

PSA: Be careful of scams related to this! I've heard of people getting calls or emails claiming to be the IRS and asking for personal info. ALWAYS go through the official IRS website or call them directly using the number on your notice.
