Got 4883c letter from IRS - Need advice on identity verification process

Hey everyone, I just got a 4883c letter from the IRS and I'm freaking out a little. They want me to verify my identity. Has anyone gone through this process before? What should I expect when I call them? I'm nervous about what to say and don't want to mess anything up. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Don't worry, it's not as scary as it sounds! I went through this last year. Here's what you need to do: • Call the number on the letter • Have your social security number ready • Bring your most recent tax return • They'll ask you some questions to verify your identity • Be patient, the wait times can be long Just be honest and straightforward. The agent will guide you through the process. Good luck!

This is great advice! I'd add that you should also have any W-2s or 1099s handy. They might ask about specific income amounts.

Ugh, the wait times are the WORST. I was on hold for like 3 hours last time I called the IRS. 😫

Thank you so much for this! It's really helpful to know what to expect. Did they ask you any tricky questions?

Not really, OP. They mostly just wanted to confirm info from my tax returns. Just make sure you have everything in front of you and you'll be fine!

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/5jrMesbidvI

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

idk man, paying to talk to the IRS? Seems sketchy af 🤔

I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo. They don't handle any of your personal info, just the hold time.

Can confirm, I used it last month. Felt like cheating the system but in a good way lol

am i the only 1 who thinks its ridiculous we have to jump through all these hoops just to prove were ourselves?? the whole systems broken smh

Quick tip: if you can't get through on the phone, try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help with identity verification issues and the wait times are usually shorter.

This is solid advice! The TAS helped me resolve an issue when I couldn't get anywhere with the main IRS line.

Anybody else notice how these 4883c letters seem to be going out more frequently lately? I swear half my office got one this year. Makes you wonder if there's been a data breach or something 👀

Omg yes! My sister and I both got one within a week of each other. Super sus if you ask me 🕵️‍♀️

It's probably just increased security measures. Better safe than sorry when it comes to identity theft.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try calling right when they open in the morning. I got through in like 15 minutes doing this!

OP, whatever you do, DON'T IGNORE THE LETTER! I made that mistake and ended up with a much bigger headache. Deal with it asap, even if it's annoying.

Definitely not ignoring it! Just wanted to be prepared before I called. Thanks for the warning though!

Has anyone successfully done this verification online? The letter mentions an online option but when I tried, it said I wasn't eligible. Wondering if its just me or if the online thing is a myth lol

I tried too and got the same message. Pretty sure the online option is about as real as my chances of winning the lottery 😂

It worked for me! But I think it depends on what info they already have on file for you. If anything seems off, they make you call in.
