IRS Identity Verification Letter - What to Expect and How to Prepare?
Hey everyone, I just got a letter from the IRS saying they need to verify my identity. Has anyone gone through this process before? What should I expect? I'm kinda nervous about it tbh.

Ugh, I went through this last year. It's a pain but not too bad. You'll probably need to provide some documents and maybe answer some questions about your past tax returns. Just make sure you have everything ready before you call them.

ā¢What kind of documents did they ask for? I'm in the same boat and wanna be prepared š

ā¢They asked for my drivers license, social security card, and a copy of last year's W-2. But it might be different for you, so have a bunch of stuff ready just in case!

ā¢I had to provide a utility bill too. Apparently they use it as proof of address or something š

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone without waiting forever. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

ā¢Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

ā¢Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo

ā¢How long did it take for them to get someone on the line?

ā¢It took about an hour and a half, but I didn't have to sit there listening to that awful hold music the whole time. They just called me when an agent was ready.

Pro tip: call early in the morning right when they open. You'll have a much better chance of getting through quickly.

I've been dealing with this for MONTHS. The IRS is so backed up, it's ridiculous. Good luck, OP. You're gonna need it š

ā¢Months?! Oh no, that's what I was afraid of. Did you ever get it resolved?

ā¢Yeah, finally. But it took forever and like 5 different phone calls. Just be persistent and keep good records of everything.

Here's a detailed breakdown of what to expect with IRS identity verification: ⢠You'll need to prove your identity with documents like a driver's license, passport, or other government-issued ID ⢠They may ask for financial documents like W-2s, 1099s, or bank statements ⢠Be prepared to answer questions about your past tax returns (amounts, filing status, etc.) ⢠You might need to verify your address with a utility bill or lease agreement ⢠If you can't verify in person or by phone, you may need to mail in copies of your documents ⢠The process can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months ⢠Keep copies of everything you send them ⢠Follow up regularly if you don't hear back Remember, the IRS won't initiate contact by email, text, or social media. If you get a letter, verify it's legit by calling the official IRS number. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Am I the only one who thinks its crazy that the IRS makes us jump through all these hoops? Like, they already have all our info. Why make it so complicated? š¤¦āāļø

ā¢It's to prevent fraud, but yeah, it's a pain for honest folks just trying to sort out their taxes.

Has anyone tried using the IRS online identity verification tool? I heard it's faster than calling or mailing stuff in.

ā¢I tried it but it didn't work for me. Ended up having to call anyway. YMMV tho

Hey Diego! I went through this exact same thing about 6 months ago and I totally get the nerves. The good news is it's mostly just paperwork and patience. A few things that helped me get through it faster: 1. Gather ALL your documents before you start - ID, Social Security card, last 2 years of tax returns, W-2s, and any correspondence from the IRS 2. Make copies of everything before you send anything in 3. If you call, do it first thing in the morning (like 7-8 AM) when they open - way shorter wait times 4. Keep a log of every interaction (dates, names, reference numbers) The whole process took about 3 weeks for me once I submitted everything. Just stay on top of it and don't let it sit! You got this! šŖ
