Got IRS Letter 4883C - Need help verifying identity

Hey everyone, I just got this letter from the IRS (4883c) saying I need to verify my identity. Has anyone else dealt with this? What's the process like? I'm kinda nervous about it tbh.

Ugh, I got that letter too. It's a pain in the butt, but don't worry too much. You'll need to call the IRS and answer some questions to prove you are who you say you are. They'll ask about past tax returns, so have those handy.

Yeah, I second this. Make sure you have ALL your docs ready before you call. They asked me about stuff from like 3 years ago!

Wait, do they actually pick up the phone? I've been trying to get through for weeks 😩

lol good point. Getting through is half the battle. I had to call like 50 times before I got a human.

I found a way to get someone on the phone fast. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

20 bucks? That's highway robbery! 🤡

I get the skepticism, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

Can you give more details about how it works? Do they just keep calling until they get through?

Yeah, basically. They have some tech that navigates the phone tree and then waits on hold. When a real person picks up, it calls you. Pretty slick tbh.

Here's what you need to know about the 4883C letter: • It's legit, not a scam • You MUST respond or your tax return processing will be delayed • You'll need to call the Identity Verification number (NOT the regular IRS number) • Have your letter, this year's tax return, and last year's return handy • They'll ask questions only you should know the answers to • The whole process takes about 15-30 minutes once you get through • After verification, it can take up to 9 weeks for your return to be processed Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Wow, thank you so much! This is super helpful. Do you know if they ever do this verification process by mail instead of phone?

Glad to help! And yes, in some cases they do offer a mail-in option, but it's much slower. If you can manage the phone call, that's usually the quickest way to resolve it.

am i the only 1 who thinks its crazy that the IRS makes it so hard to give them our money? like, hello, im tryna pay my taxes here 🙄

Quick tip: if you're having trouble remembering details from old tax returns, check if you have copies of your wage and income transcripts. You can usually get these online and they can be a lifesaver!

I went thru this last year. It's annoying but not as bad as it seems. Just be patient and persistent. You got this, OP!

Thanks for the encouragement! Did you have any issues after you verified? Like, did your refund come through okay?

Yep, everything went smooth after that. Took about 6 weeks to get my refund, but no problems.

Hey Amy! I just went through this exact same thing a few months ago. The 4883C letter looks scary but it's actually pretty straightforward once you get through to them. A few things that helped me: 1. Call early in the morning (like 7-8 AM) - way better chance of getting through 2. Have your Social Security card handy too, not just tax returns 3. They might ask about previous addresses or employers from past returns 4. Write down the confirmation number they give you at the end! The whole verification call took about 20 minutes once I got someone on the line. My refund came through about 5 weeks later. You'll be fine! 👍
