Got IRS Identity Verification Notice 5071C - What to do?
Hey everyone, I just got this IRS Identity Verification Notice 5071C in the mail. Has anyone dealt with this before? What do I need to do? I'm kinda freaking out here.

Ugh, I got one of those last year. It's a pain but not as bad as it seems. You'll need to verify your identity either online or by phone. Have you tried going to the IRS website? There should be instructions there.

•Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the website yet, I kinda panicked when I saw the letter 😅 I'll take a look now.

•Make sure you have all your docs ready before you start the process. It'll make things go smoother trust me

•Good advice, thanks! What kind of docs should I have on hand?

•You'll need your tax return, social security card, and some form of ID like a drivers license. Also any income docs like W2s or 1099s. Better to have too much than not enough!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

•Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? $20 seems steep for just a phone call.

•I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth it if you're desperate to talk to someone.

•How long did it take for them to call you back?

•It took about 2 hours for me, but I've heard it can vary. Still faster than trying to get through yourself tho!

The IRS is such a joke. Why can't they just have a normal system like every other government agency? 🙄

I've been through this process before, and I can provide some detailed steps to help you out: 1. Go to the official IRS website (www.irs.gov) and look for the Identity Verification section. 2. You'll need to create an account if you don't already have one. This requires some personal info, so have your SSN, tax return, and a mobile phone ready. 3. Once you're logged in, you'll answer a series of questions to verify your identity. These are usually about past addresses, loan amounts, etc. 4. If you can't verify online, you'll need to call the number on your 5071C letter. Be prepared for a long wait. 5. Whether online or by phone, you'll need to confirm details from your previous year's tax return. 6. After verification, it usually takes about 9 weeks for the IRS to process your return. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

•Wow, thank you so much for this detailed breakdown! It's really helpful to see all the steps laid out like this. I feel a bit less overwhelmed now.

•9 weeks?! That's ridiculous. The government needs to get its act together.

•Yeah, unfortunately that's pretty standard. The IRS is understaffed and overworked. It sucks, but not much we can do about it.

•I used H&R Block last year when I got a similar notice. They were helpful but tbh you can probably handle it yourself if you're comfortable with paperwork.

•Save ur money bro. Just follow the instructions on the IRS site. It's not that hard once you get into it.

PSA: Be careful of scams! There are a lot of people out there trying to take advantage of folks dealing with IRS issues. Always double check you're on the official IRS website and never give out personal info over the phone unless you initiated the call.

•Thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely be careful. Any red flags I should watch out for?

•The biggest one is if anyone asks for payment via gift cards or wire transfer. The IRS will NEVER do that. Also, be wary of unsolicited calls claiming to be from the IRS. They usually contact you by mail first.
