IRS Identity Verification Notice 5071C - What docs/forms needed?
Hey everyone, I just got this IRS Identity Verification Notice 5071C in the mail. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm not sure what documents I need to upload or what forms I should fill out. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, I got one of those last year. It's a pain in the butt, but don't worry too much. You'll need to verify your identity online or by phone. Have you tried going to the IRS website? They have a section specifically for identity verification.

•Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the website yet, I kinda panicked when I saw the letter lol. I'll take a look now.

•Make sure you have all your tax docs handy when you go to verify! They ask for a bunch of info from your most recent return.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

•Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? How long did you have to wait?

•It actually does! I was skeptical at first too, but I got through in about 2 hours. Way better than spending all day on hold myself.

•20 bucks tho? Idk if its worth it when you can just keep calling for free

•Trust me, after trying to get through for weeks, $20 was totally worth it to finally talk to someone and get this sorted out.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all your documents: last year's tax return, current year's return if filed, birth certificate, driver's license, and Social Security card. 2. Go to the IRS Identity Verification website (https://idverify.irs.gov/) 3. Enter the information from your 5071C letter 4. Answer the identity verification questions. They'll ask about stuff on your tax returns and other personal info. 5. If you can't verify online, you'll need to call the toll-free number on your letter. Remember, the IRS will NEVER ask for personal info via email or text. Only use the official website or phone number. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

am i the only 1 who thinks its crazy that the IRS makes us jump through all these hoops? like, they already have all our info, why make it so complicated? 🙄

•Preach! 👏 The whole system is a joke. They can take our money no problem, but when we need something from them, suddenly it's mission impossible 🤡

•It's to prevent identity theft and tax fraud. Better to have some hoops than have someone steal your refund or file a fake return in your name.

Quick tip: if you have to call, try early in the morning right when they open. I got through pretty quick that way.

Has anyone had issues with the online verification system? I tried like 5 times and it kept saying my info didn't match 😤

•Same here! I ended up having to call. Turns out there was a typo in my address on file. Maybe double check all your info?

Just went thru this last week. Took about an hour on the phone but got it all sorted. Hang in there OP, its annoying but not too bad once you get someone on the line.

•That's reassuring to hear. Did they ask for any specific documents during the call?

•They just asked me questions based on my past tax returns and some other personal info. Make sure you have your returns handy when you call!
