IRS Identity Verification Notice 5071C - What docs do I need to upload?
Hey everyone, I just got this IRS Identity Verification Notice 5071C in the mail. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm not sure what documents I need to upload or what forms to fill out. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, I got one of those last year. It's a pain but not too bad. You'll need to verify your identity online or by phone. Have you tried going to the IRS website? They have a section specifically for identity verification.

•Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the website yet, I'll do that now. Did you have to upload any specific documents?

•Yeah, you'll probably need to upload a copy of your driver's license or passport, and maybe a utility bill for proof of address. Just follow the instructions on the site, its pretty straightforward.

•Make sure you use the official IRS site tho! There are scams out there trying to get your info 👀

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

•Sounds sketchy. Is this legit? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

•I get the skepticism, but it's totally legit. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

•How long did it take for them to actually connect you with an agent?

•It took about an hour and a half, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music the whole time. They called me when an agent was on the line.

Pro tip: gather ALL your documents before you start the verification process. Tax returns, W-2s, 1099s, everything. Better to have too much than not enough!

Am I the only one who thinks its ridiculous that WE have to jump through hoops to prove who we are to the IRS? They already have all our info! 🙄

•It's to protect us from identity theft tho. Rather have this than someone filing a fake return in my name 🤷♂️

Here's a detailed breakdown of what you need to do: 1. Go to the official IRS website (www.irs.gov) 2. Look for the 'Identity Verification' section 3. You'll need to create an account if you don't already have one 4. Have these documents ready: - The 5071C letter - Your most recent tax return - A valid ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport) - Credit card info (they use this to verify, not to charge you) - Mobile phone in your name The process takes about 15-30 minutes. If you can't verify online, you'll need to call the number on your 5071C letter. Don't panic if you can't do it right away. You have 30 days from the date on the letter to complete the verification. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

•Quick question - what if I don't have a credit card? Will a debit card work?

•Good question! A debit card should work too, as long as it's in your name. If you don't have either, you might need to verify by phone instead.

Has anyone else noticed that the IRS systems seem to be getting worse every year? I swear it used to be easier to deal with this stuff.

•For real! Its like they're stuck in the 90s or something. Get with the times, IRS!

•Tbf, they are massively underfunded. Can't upgrade systems without $$$
