IRS Identity Verification by Phone: Tips and What to Expect?
Hey everyone, I'm having trouble with identity verification for the IRS. The online system isn't working for me, so I need to do it over the phone. Has anyone gone through this process? What should I expect? Any tips on how to make it go smoothly? I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing.

I went through this last year. Here's what you need to do: - Gather all your important documents: Social Security card, recent tax returns, and any IRS notices you've received. - Have your personal info ready (address, DOB, etc.) - When you call, explain that online verification failed and you need to do it by phone. - Be polite but firm about needing help. - Write down any reference numbers or instructions they give you. Good luck! It's a pain, but you'll get through it.

•This is really helpful, thanks! Did they ask you any weird questions to verify your identity?

•Yeah, they did ask some random stuff. Like, they wanted to know about a car loan I had years ago. Just be prepared for anything!

Ugh, I feel your pain. I've been trying to get through to them for weeks. The hold times are insane. 😫

•Weeks? Try months! I swear the IRS is stuck in the stone age 🦕

•Have you guys tried calling right when they open? I heard that's the best time to get through.

Pro tip: I found a way to get someone on the phone without the endless wait. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

•Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

•I get the skepticism, but it seriously worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

•Just tried it. Can confirm it works! 👍 Talked to an agent in like 30 minutes.

anyone else feel like the whole system is designed to make us give up? its ridiculous how hard they make it just to verify who we are 🙄

I had to do this last month. Here's a weird tip: if you get a grumpy agent, hang up and try again. I got way better help on my second try with a friendlier person.

•Isn't that kinda rude tho? They're probably stressed too

•Maybe, but when it comes to important stuff like this, you gotta do what works 🤷♂️

Has anyone tried faxing their documents instead? I heard that can sometimes be faster than calling.

•Faxing? What year is it, 1995? 📠😂

•Lol I know it sounds old school, but apparently the IRS still uses fax a lot 🤷♀️

Just a heads up, they might ask about old addresses or employers. I got tripped up on that and had to call back. Make sure you have that info handy!

•Preach! 🙌 It's almost like they don't want us to succeed

•It's to prevent fraud, but yeah, they could definitely streamline the process

Quick question - do they accept digital copies of documents or do they need to be originals?

•When I called, they said originals or certified copies only. No scans or photos.

•Ugh, that's annoying. Thanks for the info tho!
