IRS Identity Verification: Tips for Preparing and Handling Dropped Calls
Hey everyone, I need some help with verifying my identity with the IRS. I've been trying to get through to them but keep losing service during the call. It's so frustrating! Does anyone have any tips on how to prepare for this call or what I should expect? I'm not sure what documents I need or how the process works. Any advice would be really appreciated!

ā¢Lol for real. Next thing you know, we'll need to provide a DNA sample and our firstborn child just to file taxes š

ā¢It's definitely surreal at times, but remember, these measures are mostly in place to protect us from identity theft. Still, it's a hassle for sure.

Friendly reminder to everyone: NEVER give out your full SSN over the phone, even if they claim to be the IRS. They should only need the last 4 digits for verification. Stay safe out there!

ā¢Absolutely crucial advice. IRS scams are unfortunately common, so always verify who's asking for your info and never give out more than necessary.

ā¢Funny thing is, if they actually were robots, maybe the process would be more efficient! But in all seriousness, it's frustrating for everyone involved.

For anyone dealing with IRS identity verification, the key is preparation and patience. First, try to gather all necessary documents beforehand: your most recent tax return, any IRS letters, and ID documents. When calling, use a reliable phone line and try calling during less busy hours, like early mornings. If you're experiencing dropped calls, consider using services like Claimyr, which might not be free but can save time and frustration. However, it's important to weigh the cost against your personal budget. For privacy, never give out your full social security number over the phone; the IRS generally only requires the last four digits. Alternatively, the IRS offers an online verification option, though it can be tricky to navigate, so ensure your info is accurate and up-to-date. Lastly, above all, remain calm and patient during the process; agents are there to help, but they deal with many calls daily. With these steps, you can streamline the process and reduce stress.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

ā¢$20 just to talk to someone? That's ridiculous. The system is so broken.

ā¢I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo.

ā¢I've heard others mention Claimyr too, and while it's a useful service for some, I wish there was a free or more affordable version for those who can't afford an additional cost.

ā¢Online system is a joke. It never recognizes my info. Calling is the only way to go, unfortunately.

ā¢The IRS online verification can sometimes work, but it's definitely finicky. Make sure you have all your correct info, and try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser if you're having trouble.

Been there, done that. Make sure you have these things ready: ⢠Your most recent tax return ⢠Any letters or notices from the IRS ⢠A government ID (driver's license or passport) ⢠Your Social Security number When you finally get through, tell them right away that you're calling to verify your identity. Good luck!

ā¢Great checklist! I would also suggest having a pen and paper ready to jot down any important details or reference numbers they might give you during the call.

Thanks for the tips! Has anyone had issues with calls dropping? It's happened to me twice now and I'm worried it'll happen again when I finally get through to a real person.

ā¢Oof, that sucks. Maybe try calling from a landline if you can? Or find a spot with better cell service.

ā¢I had the same problem! I ended up using my friend's phone and it worked fine. Might be worth a shot.

ā¢Also, make sure your phone is fully charged before you start the call. You don't want it dying on you midway through the conversation!

ā¢Honestly, some guidance or a community to share experiences and tips could be a lifesaver. It's stressful, but knowing you're not alone in dealing with this is comforting.

Hey OP, just a heads up - the verification process can take a while. When I did it, the agent asked me a bunch of questions about my past tax returns and even some stuff about my credit history. It felt like an interrogation lol. Just be patient and have all your docs ready!

Dylan, I've been through this exact same situation! Here's what worked for me: First, make sure you're calling from a strong signal area - I actually drove to a different location after my first dropped call. Second, have everything organized in front of you before dialing: your Social Security card, driver's license, last year's tax return, and any IRS correspondence. Third, when you do get through, immediately ask the agent for a direct callback number in case you get disconnected - they can usually provide one. The whole process took about 45 minutes for me, but it was worth it to finally get everything sorted. The agents are actually pretty helpful once you reach them. Good luck! š¤
