Stuck on hold with IRS for identity verification - any tips to speed it up?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to verify my identity with the IRS but I'm having trouble getting through to them. I've been waiting for a call back for hours now. Anyone else dealing with this? Any tips on how to speed up the process or what to expect when I finally get through?

Ugh, been there done that. The IRS is notoriously slow with callbacks. I waited for like 3 days once. My advice? Keep trying different times of the day. Early morning seems to work best for me.

ā¢3 days?! That's insane. I thought my 6-hour wait was bad š

ā¢Yeah, it was brutal. But hang in there, OP! It's frustrating but you'll get through eventually.

ā¢Pro tip: Try calling on Tuesday or Wednesday. Mondays and Fridays are usually the busiest.

I found a way to get someone on the phone faster. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

When you finally get through, make sure you have ALL your documents ready. They'll ask for a ton of info to verify your identity. Social security card, driver's license, previous tax returns, etc. Better to be over-prepared than have to call back again!

ā¢Have you tried reaching out to your local congressman's office? Sometimes they can help speed things up with federal agencies.

Here's a detailed breakdown of what to expect when verifying your identity with the IRS: ⢠Be prepared to answer questions about your personal information, including your full name, date of birth, Social Security number, and current address. ⢠They may ask about specific lines from your most recent tax return, so have that handy. ⢠You'll need to provide information from an account that's in your name, like a credit card, mortgage, or auto loan. ⢠If you have any IRS notices or letters, keep those nearby as they might ask for information from them. ⢠The whole process usually takes about 15-30 minutes once you get through to an agent. ⢠Be patient and polite with the agent ā they're just doing their job and dealing with frustrated people all day. Hope this helps! Good luck getting through, OP!

Anyone else think its ridiculous that we have to jump through all these hoops just to prove were who we say we are? Like, dont they already have all this info? š

ā¢I get that, but there's gotta be a better way. This system is straight out of the stone age š

Pro tip: If you're having trouble getting through on the main line, try calling your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help with identity verification issues and might be easier to reach.
