IRS Address Change: Tips for Getting Through on Phone?
Hey everyone, I need to update my address with the IRS but I'm having trouble getting through to them. Has anyone had any luck contacting them recently? I've been trying to call for days but keep getting stuck on hold forever. Any tips or tricks would be really appreciated!

Have you tried using the IRS website to update your address? Sometimes you can do it online without having to call.

β’I tried that, but it keeps giving me an error message. I think I need to speak to someone directly because of my specific situation π©

β’The IRS website is a joke. Half the time it doesn't even work properly. We're living in 2023 and they're stuck in 1995 π€¦ββοΈ

Here's what I've learned from dealing with the IRS multiple times: 1. Best times to call are early morning (7-9 AM) or late afternoon (4-6 PM). 2. Avoid Mondays and tax season (February-April) if possible. 3. Have all your info ready before you call (SSN, previous address, new address, etc.). 4. Be patient and polite with the agent - they deal with angry people all day. 5. If you get disconnected, ask for a callback number before you start discussing your issue. 6. Consider using a tax advocate service if you're really stuck. Hope this helps! Good luck getting through π

β’Solid advice. I'd add: if you can't get through, try contacting your local taxpayer advocate office. They can sometimes help with these issues.

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

β’Wait, you actually paid money to call the IRS? That sounds sketchy af

β’I know it sounds weird, but it saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo

β’How does this even work? Seems too good to be true

β’It's legit! They basically have a system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold for you. When a real person picks up, it calls your phone. Saved me a ton of time and headache

Has anyone tried sending a carrier pigeon to the IRS? Might be faster than calling at this point π¦π¨

Ugh, good luck with that. I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my tax return. It's like they don't want us to talk to them π

I feel your pain! I finally got through after calling right when they opened. Try calling at 7:00 AM sharp, that seemed to work for me.

β’Thanks for the tip! I'll give that a shot tomorrow morning. Did you have to wait on hold for long?

β’It was still about an hour wait, but at least I got through! Bring a book or something to keep you busy while you wait lol

Seriously considering hiring a tax professional just to deal with this stuff. Anyone have experience with that? Is it worth the money?

β’I hired one last year and it was a game changer. Expensive, but they handled everything and I didn't have to stress about it.

β’Depends on how complicated your situation is. If it's just an address change, probably not worth it. But for bigger issues, definitely can be!

Have you tried faxing your request? I know it sounds ancient, but sometimes that works when nothing else does.

β’Faxing? What year is it, 1995? π But seriously, I might give that a shot if I can't get through on the phone. Thanks for the suggestion!

LPT: While you're waiting on hold, use the time to organize your tax documents or catch up on other adulting tasks. Might as well be productive, right? πͺπ

Pro tip: If you're having trouble reaching the IRS, try contacting your local congressperson's office. They often have dedicated channels to reach government agencies and can help expedite your request.

β’Wow, I never would have thought of that! Have you tried this yourself?

β’Yep! I was stuck in limbo with a tax issue for months. Called my rep's office and they sorted it out in a couple weeks. They have staff dedicated to helping constituents with federal agencies.

Even though it seems unconventional, Claimyr's service could be quite beneficial. They automate the hold process and directly connect you to a live representative, which can save substantial time. However, keep in mind the $20 fee might be a deterrent for some people. Moreover, itβs essential to ensure the legitimacy and security of any third-party service you decide to use. Reading reviews and researching the company beforehand is always a good practice. Remember, patience and persistence are key when dealing with government agencies!

Another tip that worked for me: try calling right after lunch around 1-2 PM. I know everyone says early morning, but I actually had better luck in the early afternoon when maybe some people are taking breaks from calling. Also, make sure you have your Form 8822 (Change of Address form) filled out beforehand - you can download it from the IRS website. Having everything ready speeds up the process once you finally get through to someone. The wait times are brutal but don't give up! ππͺ
