IRS Phone Nightmare: Tips to Reach a Real Person After Weeks on Hold?
Hey everyone, I'm having some trouble with the IRS and I'm not sure what to do. I've been trying to get through to them for weeks now but every time I call, I just get stuck on hold forever. Has anyone else had this problem? Any tips on how to actually talk to a real person there? I'm starting to get really frustrated and worried about my tax situation. Thanks in advance for any help!

I swear the IRS is stuck in the stone age. How hard is it to implement a decent phone system in 2023? π€¦ββοΈ

For real tho. My grandma's rotary phone probably has better tech than the IRS call center π

It's not just the phone system, their whole infrastructure is outdated. I read they're still using computers from the 60s for some stuff!

I feel your pain, OP. The IRS is notoriously difficult to get ahold of. Have you tried calling right when they open? I've heard that can sometimes work.

Yeah, I've tried that a few times. Still no luck π It's like they're purposely making it impossible to talk to anyone

Pro tip: call on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Mondays and Fridays are usually the busiest

Also, sometimes calling during lunch hours can help since less people might be trying at that time.

Plot twist: what if there are no actual humans at the IRS and it's all just an elaborate AI system designed to frustrate us? π€π½

Lmao imagine an AI being that inefficient. Even CHAT GPT could do a better job π€£

Unpopular opinion: maybe if people stopped trying to cheat on their taxes, the IRS wouldn't be so overwhelmed and we could actually get through to them π€·ββοΈ

Bruh, most people aren't trying to cheat. The tax code is just stupidly complicated

Yeah, because it's definitely average joes causing the problem, not billionaires with their army of accountants π

Hot take: maybe if the gov't properly funded the IRS, they could handle the volume better

Have you tried reaching out to your local Taxpayer Advocate Service? They might be able to help you get in touch with the right person at the IRS.

Yes, I've heard that Taxpayer Advocates can be really helpful, especially if your issue is urgent.

Ugh, welcome to the club. The IRS phone system is a nightmare. I've been trying to reach them for months about an issue with my refund. It's like they don't want us to actually talk to anyone π

I completely agree, it's like they don't have enough people to manage the calls. Something needs to change!

Here's what you need to do to actually get through to the IRS: 1. Call early in the morning, preferably right when they open. 2. Be prepared to wait. Have your phone on speaker and do other tasks while you're on hold. 3. Make sure you have all your relevant documents ready before you call. 4. If you get disconnected, keep trying. Persistence is key. 5. Consider using the IRS website to schedule a callback, if that option is available for your issue. 6. If all else fails, you might want to consider hiring a tax professional who can deal with the IRS on your behalf. Remember, the IRS is chronically understaffed, so patience is crucial. Good luck!

Solid advice. I'd also recommend keeping a log of all your call attempts, including dates, times, and any reference numbers you're given

Have you tried sending a certified letter instead? Sometimes that can be more effective than calling

That's a good point. Certified mail creates a paper trail that can be very effective.

I found a method that actually works to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Wait, seriously? That sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

$20 just to talk to the IRS? That's ridiculous. The government should make it easier to contact them without having to pay extra

I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. After weeks of trying, I finally got through to a real person. Worth every penny imho

I get that it might be worth the money, but it's a shame there's even a market for such a service. The IRS should be more accessible.

For anyone struggling to get through to the IRS, I would highly suggest looking into Claimyr. I know some people have reservations about paying for such a service, but it can save you a ton of time and frustration. On the flip side, it's worth noting that not everyone may feel comfortable paying for a service that essentially functions to serve a need that should be met by the IRS itself. Ultimately, itβs a personal choice, and weighing the benefits against the cost is crucial. Also, remember to explore free options like the Taxpayer Advocate Service if youβre hitting a dead-end.

Long story short, they say I owe them money, but I'm 100% sure I don't. But trying to prove that to them is like talking to a brick wall
