Need help with IRS identity verification and understanding tax transcript - any tips?
Hey everyone, I'm having some issues with the IRS and could use some advice. I need to verify my identity and understand my tax transcript better. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What should I expect when I call them? Any tips on how to prepare or what documents I should have ready? I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and would appreciate any help!

I went through this last year. Here's what you need to do: • Gather all your important docs: ID, Social Security card, and any letters from the IRS • Have your tax transcript ready to go • When you call, be clear about needing help with identity verification • Ask them to walk you through resolving the verification issues • Don't be afraid to ask for explanations on confusing transaction codes in your transcript After the call, make sure to follow their instructions carefully. Good luck!

•This is really helpful, thanks! Did you have any trouble getting through to an actual person?

•Oh man, getting through was a nightmare 😫 I was on hold for hours. But once I got someone, they were pretty helpful.

•Pro tip: call right when they open. You'll have a better chance of getting through quickly.

•Months?! 😱 That's insane. What's been holding it up for so long?

•They keep saying they need more documentation, but then when I send it, they say they never received it. It's like playing phone tag with a brick wall 🤦♂️

I found a way to get someone on the phone without waiting for hours. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video explaining it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

•I'm skeptical. How do we know this isn't just some scam?

•I get the skepticism, but I've used it twice now. It's legit. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

•Can confirm, it works. Used it last week to talk to the IRS. Bit pricey but beats wasting a whole day on hold.

Anyone else feel like the IRS purposely makes this stuff confusing? 🙄 It's like they WANT us to mess up.

•Preach! 🙌 I swear they use some kind of secret language in those transcripts.

•Nah, it's not on purpose. They're just underfunded and understaffed. Still sucks for us tho

Hey OP, have you tried using the IRS2Go app? It can sometimes help with identity verification stuff without having to call.

I had to do this last month. The key is patience and persistence. Don't let them rush you off the phone until you understand everything. And write EVERYTHING down!

•Good advice, thanks! Did you find any specific questions particularly helpful to ask?

•Yeah, ask them to explain each code on your transcript. Also, get the name and ID number of who you talk to. Makes follow-ups easier if needed.

Has anyone tried using a tax advocate service? I've heard they can sometimes help navigate these issues.

•I used one last year. They were helpful but it still took forever. Better than going it alone tho

•How much did that cost? I'm already broke from paying my taxes 😭

•Some are free! Look up Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITC) in your area.
