Need help verifying identity with IRS for taxes - what to expect and prepare?
Hey everyone, I need to verify my identity for my taxes and I'm not sure what to expect. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What documents should I have ready? I'm a bit nervous about the whole thing and could use some advice.

I just went through this last month. Here's what you need to know: • Have your Social Security card ready • Bring your most recent tax return • Any IRS letters you've received • Be prepared to answer questions about past addresses and financial accounts • Ask the agent what specific documents they need • Find out how long the verification process will take • After verifying, ask when you can expect updates on your tax status Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

•This is super helpful, thanks! Did they ask you about any specific financial accounts? I'm worried I might not remember all the details.

•They mostly asked about bank accounts and any investment accounts I had. Just have a general idea of what accounts you've opened in the last few years and you should be fine.

•How long did the whole process take for you? I'm trying to plan my day around this call.

•The actual verification call took about 30 minutes, but I was on hold for over 2 hours before I got through to someone. It's a time sink for sure.

Pro tip: I found a way to get someone on the phone without the endless wait. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

•I get the skepticism, but it seriously saved me hours of frustration. Worth every penny imo

•Can you give more details about how it works? Do they just keep calling until they get through?

•Yeah, basically. They have some kind of system that navigates the phone tree and waits on hold. When a real person picks up, it calls you. Super simple.

Anyone else feel like the IRS is purposely making this difficult? 🙄 It's like they WANT us to mess up our taxes.

Quick question - does anyone know if I can use my passport instead of my social security card for verification? I can't find my SS card anywhere 😬

•I used my passport last time and it was fine. Just make sure you have some other form of ID too, like a driver's license.

LPT: While you're waiting on hold, go to the Social Security Administration website and request a replacement SS card. Might as well knock out two birds with one stone!

•This is actually genius. Wish I'd thought of that when I was dealing with this mess!

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like they're playing 20 questions with the IRS every time they call? 🤡 "What was the name of your first pet's veterinarian's cousin's favorite ice cream flavor?"

•LMAO 🤣 For real though, some of their questions are so specific it's ridiculous

•I swear they asked me what I had for breakfast three years ago on a Tuesday. I was like, bruh, I don't even know what I ate yesterday 💀

Heads up: If you filed your taxes electronically, make sure you have the exact AGI from last year's return. They always ask for it and it's a pain if you don't have it handy.

Anyone else think its wild that we have to jump through all these hoops just to pay our taxes? Like, take my money already! 😅
