IRS Online Account Access Suspended - Help!

I'm having trouble accessing my IRS online account and I'm not sure what to do. I tried contacting them, but they couldn't help me directly with account access. They referred me back to ID.me, but ID.me doesn't offer phone support. I've been trying email support, but it's not really helping me get back into my account. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any suggestions on how to regain access?

Ugh, I feel your pain! I went through the same nightmare last year. The IRS online system is a total mess. Have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? Sometimes that helps with weird login issues.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give that a try. Did you eventually get back into your account?

Yeah, after like a month of trying everything. It was such a headache. Good luck!

I found a method to get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/bDXD2SD0gGk

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

I was skeptical at first too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time.

20 bucks tho? 🤔 Idk if its worth it

Trust me, after spending days trying to get through, $20 was totally worth it to finally talk to someone.

Have you tried contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate Service? They might be able to help you navigate this issue or at least point you in the right direction.

Here's what I'd recommend: 1. Double-check that you're using the correct username and password 2. Try accessing your account from a different device or browser 3. Check if there are any reported outages or maintenance on the IRS website 4. If you're still locked out, you might need to verify your identity again through ID.me 5. As a last resort, you can request a transcript by mail, which doesn't require online access Hope this helps! Let me know if you need any clarification on these steps.

Thank you so much for the detailed advice! I'll work through these steps and see if I can make any progress.

This is solid advice. I'd add that sometimes waiting 24-48 hours and trying again can work if it's a temporary glitch in their system.

3 months?! That's insane. Have you tried contacting your congressperson? Sometimes they can help with federal agency issues.

PSA: Be careful with ID.me, folks. They collect A LOT of personal data. If you're concerned about privacy, you might want to look into alternatives or at least read their privacy policy carefully.

This! 👆 I've heard some sketchy things about them. Wish the IRS would use a different system.

Have you tried turning it off and on again? 😂 jk jk... but seriously, sometimes logging out of everything, restarting your computer, and trying again can work wonders. Worth a shot!

I had the exact same issue a few months ago! After trying everything else, what finally worked for me was going through the ID.me identity verification process again from scratch. Even though it was frustrating, I had to re-upload my documents and do the video chat verification. It took about a week, but once that was complete, I was able to access my IRS account again. Also, make sure you're using the exact same personal information (spelling, etc.) that's on your tax return - any tiny discrepancy can cause issues. Hang in there!

This is really helpful! I'm dealing with the same thing right now and getting so frustrated. How long did the video chat verification take when you did it? I'm worried about having to wait forever just to get scheduled.

@Jordan Walker Thanks for sharing your experience! That gives me some hope. Did you have to wait long to get the video chat scheduled, or were you able to do it pretty quickly? I m'in the same boat and trying to figure out if I should just bite the bullet and start the whole process over again.

I went through something similar last year and it was such a headache! One thing that helped me was making sure I was using the exact same browser I originally used to set up my account. Also, try accessing the IRS site directly (irs.gov) instead of going through any bookmarks or third-party links - sometimes that can cause authentication issues. If you're still stuck, you might want to try creating a completely new ID.me account with a different email address if you have one. I know it's frustrating to start over, but sometimes it's faster than trying to recover a problematic account. Good luck!

That's a great point about using the same browser! I never would have thought of that. The idea about creating a new ID.me account is interesting too - have you heard of anyone running into issues with having multiple accounts tied to the same SSN? I'm wondering if that could create complications down the road with the IRS system.

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago and it was absolutely maddening! What finally worked for me was actually calling the IRS Practitioner Priority Service line (855-562-5227) early in the morning around 7 AM. Even though it's technically for tax professionals, they were able to help me reset my account access. The key was being super persistent and explaining that I couldn't file my taxes because of the account lockout. They transferred me to someone who could manually verify my identity over the phone using information from my previous tax returns. It took about 45 minutes total, but I was back in my account the same day. Worth trying before you go through the whole ID.me verification process again!

Wow, that's amazing that you got through! I've been trying the regular IRS number for weeks with no luck. Quick question - when you called the Practitioner Priority line, did they ask you to prove you were a tax professional or did they just help you directly? I'm worried they might turn me away since I'm not actually a practitioner. Also, do you remember what specific information from your tax returns they used to verify your identity? Want to make sure I have everything ready before I try calling. Thanks so much for this tip!

I'm going through the exact same nightmare right now! Been locked out for 2 weeks and it's so frustrating. The ID.me system is such a pain - I've submitted my documents three times and keep getting generic email responses that don't actually solve anything. Has anyone had luck with the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service that someone mentioned earlier? I'm getting desperate at this point and wondering if I should just try calling them directly instead of dealing with ID.me. This whole system feels broken! 😤
