CP05A Notice: No response from IRS after 60 days, still no 2023 tax refund. Help!
Has anyone else not received their 2023 tax return refund yet? I got a CP05A notice and sent in all the income verification docs they asked for, but I haven't heard anything back. The IRS refund website isn't showing any updates either. They said it would take 60 days, but I'm getting worried. Anyone else in the same boat or have any advice?

Ugh, I'm in the exact same situation! Sent in my docs months ago and crickets since then. The IRS is such a mess this year 🤦♂️

•Guys, I hate to break it to you, but 60 days is like their minimum estimate. I've been waiting for 4 months now 😭

•4 months?! Are you kidding me? That's insane. What are we supposed to do, just sit here twiddling are thumbs?

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone at the IRS. I used this site called claimyr.com - it's a calling tool that dials through the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a live agent picks up. It costs $20, but it worked for me. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

•Sounds too good to be true. How does it actually work?

•It's legit! You pay, give them your number, and they call you when they get an agent. Saved me hours of hold time.

•Idk man, paying to talk to the IRS? Seems sketchy af 🤔

•I get the skepticism, but it's just a time-saving service. Still talking directly to IRS agents, just skipping the hold.

Here's what I've learned from my experience and research: 1. The CP05A notice is part of the IRS's income verification process. It's annoying, but actually pretty common. 2. The 60-day timeframe is more like a minimum. With current backlogs, it can take much longer. 3. Keep checking the Where's My Refund tool, but don't expect frequent updates. 4. If it's been more than 60 days, try calling the IRS directly. Be prepared for long hold times. 5. Consider contacting your local Taxpayer Advocate Service. They can sometimes help move things along. 6. Make sure you've kept copies of everything you sent in. You might need to resend. 7. Unfortunately, there's no way to expedite the process. Patience is key here. Hope this helps! Hang in there, everyone.

•Call early in the morning or late in the day, and avoid Mondays if possible. Those tend to be the busiest times.

Has anyone tried reaching out to their congressperson? I've heard that can sometimes help speed things up.

•I did! My rep's office was actually super helpful. They can't guarantee anything, but they did get me some answers.

Guys I finally got through to someone at the IRS! Pro tip: if you call the Spanish line and then ask for an English speaker, the wait time is way shorter.

I'm going through the exact same thing! Filed in February, got the CP05A notice in April, sent everything they requested, and now it's been over 3 months with zero updates. The "Where's My Refund" tool just says "Your return is being processed" like it has for months. I'm starting to wonder if they actually received my documents or if they got lost in the mail. Has anyone had success with sending documents via certified mail instead of regular mail? At this point I'm considering that for any future correspondence just to have proof of delivery.

•Definitely send everything certified mail from now on! I learned that lesson the hard way when I had to resend my docs because they claimed they never received them. The tracking gives you peace of mind and proof if they try to say they didn't get it. Also, I'd recommend calling them to confirm they have your documents on file - sometimes they receive them but don't process them right away. The whole system is so frustrating! 😤

Ugh, this is so relatable! I'm in month 5 of waiting after sending in my CP05A documents. What's really frustrating is that the IRS phone system is basically designed to discourage you from calling - those hold times are brutal. I've been keeping a detailed log of all my interactions and dates just in case I need to escalate this further. Has anyone tried filing a complaint with the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA)? I'm starting to think that might be my next step if I don't hear something soon. This whole process feels like being stuck in bureaucratic quicksand! 😫

•5 months?! That's absolutely insane! I'm only at 3 months and already losing my mind. The bureaucratic quicksand analogy is spot on - feels like the harder you try to get answers, the deeper you sink. I hadn't heard of TIGTA before, that might be worth looking into. Keeping a detailed log is smart too, I should probably start doing that. At this point I'm wondering if there's some kind of class action lawsuit brewing over these ridiculous delays 😤

I'm dealing with the exact same nightmare! Got my CP05A back in March, sent all the requested documents immediately, and here I am in December still waiting. The most infuriating part is that when I finally got through to someone last month (after 2+ hours on hold), they told me my case was "still under review" and couldn't give me any timeline. Like, what are they reviewing for 8+ months?! I've started documenting everything too - dates, reference numbers, who I spoke with. My tax preparer said this year has been particularly bad with these income verification delays. At this point I'm convinced they're just hoping we'll give up and stop asking about our refunds. Anyone know if there's interest penalties they have to pay us for these ridiculous delays?

•8+ months?! That's absolutely ridiculous! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I'm only 3 months in and already pulling my hair out. The fact that they can't even give you a timeline after all this time is just insulting. And yes, you're right about interest penalties - the IRS is supposed to pay interest on refunds that are delayed beyond a certain point (I think it's 45 days from the due date or filing date, whichever is later). You should definitely ask about that when you call next! It's probably not much, but it's something. This whole system is broken 😡

I'm so glad I found this thread - I was starting to think I was the only one going through this! I got my CP05A notice back in May and sent in all my W-2s and 1099s right away. It's now been 7 months and absolutely nothing. The "Where's My Refund" tool is basically useless at this point - just keeps saying "being processed" like a broken record. What really gets me is that they can take their sweet time reviewing our stuff, but if we owed THEM money, you bet they'd want it immediately with penalties and interest! The double standard is infuriating. I've tried calling multiple times but those 3+ hour hold times are just not realistic when you have a job. Has anyone had any luck with the online account portal showing more detailed status info than the refund tool? I'm running out of patience here and really need that refund for some unexpected medical bills that came up. This whole situation is just adding stress on top of stress! 😩

•You're definitely not alone in this! I'm going through the exact same thing and it's so frustrating. The double standard you mentioned is spot on - they expect immediate payment from us but can drag their feet for months on our refunds. I hope you get some resolution soon, especially with those medical bills adding extra pressure. Have you tried reaching out to your local congressman's office? I saw someone mention earlier that their representative's office was able to get them some answers. Might be worth a shot when dealing with such long delays! 🤞

I'm in the exact same boat as everyone here! Got my CP05A in April, sent everything they asked for right away, and it's been radio silence for 8 months now. The most frustrating part is how the "Where's My Refund" tool basically mocks you with the same "being processed" message for months on end. I finally got through to someone last week after a 2.5 hour hold (called at 7 AM sharp) and they told me my documents were received but my case is in "the queue for review" with no timeline. When I asked what that actually means, they basically said "we'll get to it when we get to it." At this point I'm convinced they're just hoping we'll forget about our refunds entirely. The whole system feels designed to wear us down until we give up. I'm definitely going to try reaching out to my congressman's office like others have suggested - this is beyond ridiculous! Hang in there everyone, we'll get through this bureaucratic nightmare eventually 😤

•Wow, 8 months is just insane! I'm only 2 months into this nightmare and already feeling defeated. The "queue for review" response is such a cop-out - like, what does that even mean?! Thanks for sharing the tip about calling at 7 AM, I'm definitely going to try that. It's weirdly comforting to know I'm not the only one dealing with this broken system, even though I wouldn't wish this frustration on anyone. We really shouldn't have to jump through all these hoops just to get OUR OWN money back! 😩

This thread is like a support group for IRS trauma victims! 😅 I'm dealing with the exact same CP05A nightmare - sent my docs in June and it's been 6 months of absolutely nothing. What really bugs me is how they can send you a notice demanding documents within 30 days, but then take half a year (or more!) to actually review them. I've been keeping copies of everything and tracking all my attempts to contact them. One thing that helped me stay (somewhat) sane is setting up a dedicated folder for all IRS correspondence and checking it only once a week instead of obsessively refreshing "Where's My Refund" daily. Still incredibly frustrating, but at least I'm not torturing myself every day! For anyone still waiting - you're not crazy, this system IS broken, and your frustration is 100% valid. We'll get through this eventually! 💪

•Ha! IRS trauma victims support group - that's exactly what this feels like! 😂 I'm only about 4 months into my CP05A waiting game but reading everyone's stories makes me feel less alone in this madness. Your tip about checking only once a week is genius - I've been driving myself crazy refreshing that stupid "Where's My Refund" tool multiple times a day like it's going to magically update. The 30 days for us vs 6+ months for them is such BS! Thanks for the reality check that this system really IS broken and we're not just being impatient. Solidarity in suffering, I guess! 🤝

I'm going through this exact same situation! Filed my 2023 return in February, got the CP05A notice in late March, and sent all my documents back within a week. It's now been over 8 months and I'm still getting the same "Your return is being processed" message on Where's My Refund. What's really frustrating is that I called twice - once in July after waiting the initial 60 days, and again in October. Both times I sat on hold for over 2 hours just to be told "your case is under review, please continue to wait." No timeline, no explanation of what they're actually reviewing for so long. I really needed that refund earlier this year for some home repairs, and now I'm wondering if I should just assume it's never coming. Has anyone actually gotten their refund resolved after waiting this long? Starting to feel like we're all just shouting into the void here! 😭

•I totally feel your pain! 8+ months is absolutely ridiculous - you're definitely not shouting into the void, we're all here dealing with this broken system together. I'm newer to this nightmare (just got my CP05A notice last month) but reading everyone's experiences here is both terrifying and oddly reassuring that I'm not alone. The fact that you needed that refund for home repairs makes this even more infuriating - they're holding up people's lives with these insane delays! I really hope you get some movement on your case soon. Have you considered trying that congressional representative route that others mentioned? At this point it seems like anything is worth a shot! 🤞

This is absolutely maddening! I'm also stuck in CP05A limbo - got my notice back in June and sent in all my W-2s and bank statements right away. It's been 6 months now and I'm getting the same runaround as everyone else. Called three times, each time waiting 2+ hours just to hear "your case is under review" with zero timeline or explanation. What really gets me is that they can issue these notices and demand our documentation within 30 days, but then take MONTHS to actually look at what we send them. Meanwhile, we're all just supposed to sit around waiting for OUR OWN MONEY while they take their sweet time. I've started keeping a detailed log of every interaction too, just in case this needs to go further. Reading all these stories makes me feel less crazy but also more frustrated that this is happening to so many people. The system is completely broken and we're all paying the price! 😤 Has anyone had luck with that Taxpayer Advocate Service mentioned earlier? I'm seriously considering that route at this point.

•I'm so sorry you're going through this too! 6 months is just unacceptable. I actually did contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service about 2 months ago when I hit the 4-month mark with my CP05A case. They were definitely more helpful than the regular IRS phone line - they assigned me a case advocate who actually followed up with me and gave me a realistic timeline (though it was still longer than I hoped). It didn't magically speed things up overnight, but at least I felt like someone was actually paying attention to my case instead of just brushing me off. Definitely worth trying if you're at the 6-month mark! The worst they can do is tell you to keep waiting, which is what you're doing anyway. Keep that log too - documentation is key with these people! 📝

I'm in this exact same nightmare! Got my CP05A notice in August, sent all my documents immediately via certified mail (learned that tip from horror stories like these), and it's now been 4 months with absolutely nothing. The "Where's My Refund" tool feels like it's mocking me at this point with that same "being processed" message. What's really frustrating is I actually got through to someone last month after a brutal 3-hour hold, and they confirmed they received my documents but said my case is "in the system for review" with no timeline whatsoever. When I asked what specifically they're reviewing for 4+ months, the agent basically said they couldn't provide details and to "continue monitoring Where's My Refund" - like, are you kidding me?! Reading everyone's experiences here is both comforting (knowing I'm not alone) and terrifying (seeing people waiting 8+ months). This whole system is absolutely broken. We shouldn't have to become detectives and support group members just to get our own tax refunds back! Definitely going to try contacting my congressman's office and the Taxpayer Advocate Service based on the suggestions here. At this point, anything is worth a shot! 🤞

•4 months is already way too long, but I'm glad you sent everything certified mail - that was smart! I'm just starting this whole CP05A process (got my notice two weeks ago) and reading all these stories has me both prepared and terrified for what's ahead. It's insane that you actually got through to someone after 3 hours just to be told basically nothing useful. The "continue monitoring Where's My Refund" response is like adding insult to injury when that tool clearly doesn't update for months! Definitely try those congressional and Taxpayer Advocate routes - seems like the regular IRS channels are basically useless at this point. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's helping me set realistic (unfortunately very low) expectations for this process! 😫

The "Where's My Refund" tool has been showing the same "being processed" message for months - it's basically useless at this point. I finally got through to someone last week after waiting on hold for over 2.5 hours (thanks for the 7 AM tip from earlier comments!) and they told me my documents were received but my case is "pending review" with no timeline. When I pressed for more details, they basically said there's a huge backlog and I just have to keep waiting. It's so frustrating because I really needed that refund months ago for some unexpected car repairs. Reading all these stories makes me feel less alone but also more angry that this is happening to so many people. •I'm so sorry you're dealing with this too! 5 months is just unacceptable, especially when you needed that money for car repairs. It's really encouraging to hear that the 7 AM calling tip actually worked for getting through - I'm definitely going to try that myself. The "pending review" with no timeline response is so infuriating, like they're holding our money hostage with zero accountability. I just got my CP05A notice last week and was hoping it wouldn't be this bad, but reading everyone's experiences here is definitely setting my expectations low. Thanks for the encouragement about the Taxpayer Advocate Service and congressional route - seems like those are our best bets at this point since the regular IRS system is completely useless. We really shouldn't have to become advocacy experts just to get our own refunds! Hang in there! 🤞

I'm dealing with the exact same situation! Got my CP05A notice in September and sent all my documents via certified mail right away. It's been 3 months now and still nothing but that same useless "being processed" message on Where's My Refund. What really bothers me is how they can demand our documentation within 30 days but then take months (or apparently up to a year based on what I'm reading here) to review it. Meanwhile, if we owed THEM money, you know they'd want it immediately with penalties and interest! I've been hesitant to call because of all the horror stories about 3+ hour hold times, but after reading about the 7 AM tip and seeing that some people have actually gotten through, I think I'm going to give it a shot. This whole process is just so demoralizing - we shouldn't have to become experts in bureaucratic warfare just to get our own tax refunds back. Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences here. It's frustrating to see how widespread this problem is, but at least I know I'm not going crazy and this really is as broken as it seems! Definitely going to look into the Taxpayer Advocate Service if I don't hear something soon. Stay strong everyone! 💪
