Received CP05 Notice for 2024 Return with 810 Code - IRS Reviewing Return for up to 60 Days, No Action Needed Now
So I checked my transcript earlier this month and saw code 810 which I've never had before. I was nervous about what was happening with my refund and was told to wait for the notice. Just got this CP05 notice in my email today dated March 3, 2025 regarding my 2024 tax return. The notice states: "We're reviewing your return to verify its accuracy. We understand your tax refund is important to you and we'll work to complete our review as quickly as possible." It goes on to explain that they're reviewing returns to determine whether income, income tax withholding, credits, or expenses are reported correctly. The notice specifically says I don't need to do anything at this time, and they'll either: - Send me my refund - Ask for additional information - Deny all or part of my refund (with the option to appeal if I disagree) The frustrating part is that it could take up to 60 days to complete their review. The notice even says "Please wait 60 days before contacting us since we won't be able to provide any additional information." They suggest checking refund status at IRS.gov/Refunds or the IRS2Go mobile app. There's also a concerning section about identity theft that says "If you didn't file a 2024 tax return, someone may have attempted to use your personal information to obtain a tax refund." In that case, they recommend completing Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) and visiting IRS.gov/ID for more information about tax-related identity theft. But I definitely filed my return in mid-February, so that part doesn't apply to me. The notice is labeled as "CP05" for Tax Year 2024, Page 1 of 2. Has anyone dealt with this before? Is this really just a waiting game now or should I be doing something proactive? Filed in mid-February and was expecting my refund by March, now it seems like it could be May before I get anything. Should I call them before the 60 days is up or just keep waiting?

CP05 is indeed a verification notice that means the IRS is reviewing your return. The 810 code on your transcript means "Freeze Refund Pending" which aligns with the CP05 notice. The good news is this appears to be a random review and not due to any specific issues they've identified with your return. Since they're not requesting additional documentation at this time, it really is just a waiting game. These reviews are fairly common as the IRS uses them to verify the accuracy of returns and prevent fraud. Most CP05 reviews do resolve within the 60-day timeframe they mention, sometimes sooner. The best thing to do is: • Continue checking your transcript for updates • Watch for any additional notices requesting information • Don't call before the 60 days are up as they likely won't have any updates • If you do need to call after 60 days, use the number on your notice (800-829-1040) I've seen many of these resolve with the refund being released in full, so try not to worry too much!

•Thanks for this detailed response! Really helps to understand what's happening. Do you know if there's any way to expedite this review process?

•Unfortunately there's no way to expedite the review. The IRS processes these in the order received and has internal timelines they follow. Even calling won't speed things up - they'll just tell you what you already know from the notice.

•I had a CP05 last year and it took exactly 45 days before my refund was approved. Hang tight!

•Had this last year. Took almost the full 60 days but got full refund. No rhyme or reason to who they select for these random reviews

I was in this exact situation a few weeks ago. Instead of waiting around for 60 days, I used this tool called taxr.ai to help me understand my transcript and what was actually happening. It saved me so much time trying to decode all those stupid IRS codes and gave me a clear explanation of my CP05 situation. It told me exactly what was happening and when I could expect my refund based on similar cases. Way better than stressing for weeks! I seriously recommend checking it out at https://taxr.ai if you want clarity on your situation.

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does way more than just read transcripts. You upload ur transcript or notice and it analyzes everything using some AI. Gives u a complete breakdown of what's happening with timeline predictions and explains all the codes in plain english. Saved me from pulling my hair out trying to figure out what all those codes mean and why my refund was delayed. Probably the best tool I've found for dealing with IRS issues.

•JUST CHECKED THIS OUT AND OMG THANK YOU!!! This was exactly what I needed!!! It explained my situation perfectly and now I finally understand whats happening with my refund. Why doesn't the IRS just explain things this clearly?? Everyone with tax issues needs to know about this tool!

•another app promising miracles with the IRS? yeah right 🙄

•Not promising miracles, just clarity. Big difference. It doesn't speed up the IRS but tells you what's actually happening so you're not in the dark. My refund still took time but at least I knew exactly what was going on.

After dealing with a similar situation and not getting anywhere by myself, I finally got through to an actual IRS agent using Claimyr.com. They connected me with a live agent who explained exactly what was happening with my review and gave me specifics about my case that I couldn't get anywhere else. Talking directly to someone who could see my file and explain the situation was a huge relief. Best money I've ever spent to get answers about my tax situation! Highly recommend if you're tired of the waiting game and want real answers.

•wait what is this? some kinda service that gets u through to the IRS? didn't even know that was possibl

•Yep! It gets you past the endless IRS phone tree and hold times. You basically pay them to wait on hold for you, then they call you once they have an agent on the line. Saved me literally hours of frustration.

•That sounds amazing. Did the agent actually help resolve your issue or just give you more info?

Harper Thompson
•Both! The agent could see exactly why my return was under review and gave me a more specific timeframe than the generic 60 days. In my case, they were able to verify some info while I was on the phone and actually expedite the process a bit. Your mileage may vary but just having clear answers was worth it for me.

•Not a scam. They just wait on hold for you. Think of it like paying someone to stand in line at the DMV. They don't have special access, they just do the waiting part for you.

I had the exact same CP05 notice last year. I basically had to wait the entire 60 days and then my refund was released in full. No additional verification or info was ever requested. Its annoying but pretty standard IRS procedure now. They're incredibly backlogged still after the pandemic so these "random" reviews take forever. Don't waste your time calling, they'll just tell you to wait.

•same here! 58 days of waiting and then magically my refund showed up. no explanation, no apology for the delay. classic IRS 🤣

•Interesting, mine only took 3 weeks after getting CP05. Wonder if it depends on what they're reviewing or just random luck.

This is exactly why the tax system is broken. The government takes money out of your paycheck all year, then when you file to get YOUR OWN MONEY back they can just decide to hold it for 60 days with zero explanation. And we're just supposed to be ok with it? Meanwhile if we're late paying them by even one day they charge penalties and interest. The double standard is insane.

•I mean they do need to verify returns... there's a ton of fraud. But yeah the timeframe is ridiculous. They should pay us interest for the delay.

Brianna Schmidt
•They actually do pay interest on delayed refunds, but only after 45 days from filing deadline OR the date you filed, whichever is later. And the interest rate is pathetic compared to what they charge us.

Can I just say the irony of the IRS sending notices that say "you don't need to do anything" while also saying "BTW this could be identity theft if you didn't file" is PEAK government communication. Like why even put that in there if this is a normal review? Just freaks people out for no reason.

I went thru this last year. They didn't ended up asking for nothing just was a waiting game. After the 60 days I was supa pissed cause I still had no refund. Ended up getting a live person on the phone who just "released" the hold. Had my money 5 days later. Dont know why they couldn't done that 2 months earlier but whateva I guess

•Look up the IRS extension hack online. Theres specific numbers you press to bypass the menus. Still had to wait on hold for like 2 hrs tho so call early in the morning

Check your transcripts weekly for updates. I had an 810 code and CP05 this year and after about 4 weeks, they added a 571 code (resolved freeze) and then 846 code (refund issued). Never had to provide any documents or verification. The system is weird but at least you got the notice which means they're actively working on it.

So frustrating! I have kids to feed and bills to pay. Not my fault my employer withheld too much. That's MY money and the IRS should have to pay interest for holding onto it so long.

•Yeah but it's like 5% which is a joke compared to my credit card interest rate that I'm having to use because they're holding my money 😡

•Adjust your W4 to have less withholding throughout the year so you're not giving the IRS an interest-free loan. Better to get your money in each paycheck than wait for a refund.

I've been through two CP05 reviews in the past 3 years. First one took the full 60 days, second one only took about 3 weeks. I haven't figured out any difference between the two experiences. It's so random. Some things that might trigger these reviews include: claiming EITC or ACTC, having a significant change in income from previous year, or filing early in the season. It's basically the IRS's way of doing a spot check to prevent fraud.

The 810 code is annoying but at least you got the notice explaining what's happening. Has anyone tried using taxr.ai for understanding these transcript codes? I kept seeing it mentioned in other threads and it actually helped me understand my transcript situation. It explained all of my codes including what happens next and estimated timeframes based on my specific situation. https://taxr.ai saved me from endless googling and trying to piece together what was going on with my return!

I HATE CP05. I've gotten it 3 years in a row now and I'm sick of it. My returns are simple - W2 income, standard deduction, nothing fancy. Yet they keep "reviewing" my returns and making me wait. It's such a waste of resources. If they spent half as much time improving their systems as they do on these pointless reviews, we'd all be better off. I'm convinced they just do this to random people to delay paying out refunds.

•3 years in a row is definitely not random. There might be something specific about your situation triggering these reviews. Have you had identity theft issues in the past? Or maybe your employer is submitting something incorrectly.

•No idea. My income and job have been consistent. No ID theft that I know of. Makes zero sense but the IRS won't explain anything.

Pro tip: Always check your account transcript, not just your return transcript. The account transcript will show codes like 810, 570, 571, 420, etc. that give you much more info on what's happening with your return. Check it weekly during this review period to see updates. When you see code 571 and then 846, you're good - refund is on the way.

At this point just assume your refund will be delayed every year lol. The IRS is so backlogged and understaffed that these "reviews" are their way of managing the workload. They're basically saying "we'll get to it when we get to it". Welcome to the wonderful world of US taxation where the rules are made up and the timeframes don't matter!

I was totally confused by all these codes until I found Claimyr.com. Got me a callback from an IRS agent in less than an hour who explained my entire situation. Turns out my review was almost complete and my refund was scheduled to be released next week! Talking to a real agent was the only way I found this out and it was worth every penny to not spend hours on hold. Just my experience if anyone else is tired of waiting and guessing.

•What's "free" about spending 3+ hours on hold? My time is worth money. I tried calling directly multiple times and couldn't get through. This service had me talking to an agent in 45 mins while I just went about my day. Up to you if it's worth it, but it was for me.

•I don't remember the exact amount but it was reasonable considering I avoided hours of frustration. They don't charge if they can't get you through to an agent. You can check their site for current pricing.

I'm literally in this EXACT situation right now and also filed in February. It's so annoying because last year I got my refund in 10 days with zero issues. This year? Random 810 code and CP05 notice. No explanation of why MY return got flagged. I'm just an ordinary worker with a simple return. Nothing changed from last year!

The IRS has been using automated systems to flag returns for review more often since the pandemic. They found that their old targeting methods weren't catching certain types of fraud, so now they cast a wider net. The problem is they don't have enough staff to quickly process all the returns they flag, so innocent taxpayers are caught in the backlog. It's unfair but it's the reality of the system right now.

anyone know if theres a way to figure out WHY your return got selected for review? like are they looking at a specific part of my return or is it totally random?

•The CP05 is deliberately vague for security reasons. They don't want to tell you exactly what triggered the review because scammers could use that info. But common triggers include: claiming refundable credits, self-employment income, large changes in income year-over-year, or just random selection.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Got my CP05 notice last week and have been stressing about it ever since. It's so frustrating because like you, I filed a completely straightforward return in February and was expecting my refund by now. The waiting game is the worst part - 60 days feels like forever when you're counting on that money. I've been checking my transcript obsessively but nothing has changed since the 810 code appeared. From what I'm reading here, it sounds like most people do get their full refund eventually, which is reassuring. I guess we just have to be patient even though it's incredibly annoying. Thanks for sharing your experience - at least I know I'm not alone in this! Keep us updated on how it goes. Hopefully we'll both see some movement on our transcripts soon. 🤞

•I feel your pain! Just went through this exact situation myself a few months ago. The obsessive transcript checking is so real - I was refreshing that page multiple times a day hoping to see some change. One thing that helped me was setting a weekly reminder to check instead of daily. It saved my sanity because these reviews really do take weeks to process and checking every day just made the waiting feel longer. From everything I've read here and experienced myself, the vast majority of CP05 reviews end with the full refund being released. Try to hang in there - I know it's easier said than done when you're counting on that money! The waiting is definitely the hardest part but it sounds like we're all in good company with this frustrating process.
