CP05 Notice Received - What's Your Status/Timeline?
I'm absolutely at my wit's end with this CP05 notice! Received it about 3 weeks ago saying they need to 'verify' certain information on my return. I filed back in early February and was counting on this refund for some medical expenses I've been putting off. I've spent HOURS trying to reach someone at the IRS. I've kept meticulous records of everything - all my 1099-Rs, Social Security statements, and even my property tax records since I itemized. Has anyone else gotten this CP05 verification notice recently? Are you still waiting? What was your timeline like? I'd really appreciate knowing what I'm in for here. This uncertainty is just making my blood pressure worse!

I received a CP05 notice exactly 47 days ago. It's an identity/income verification review that's become much more common in the last 2 tax seasons. The notice says it can take up to 60 days, but in my experience (and from tracking about 15 other cases), the actual timeframes are: - 42% of cases resolve within 35-45 days - 31% resolve between 46-60 days - 27% go beyond the 60 days, sometimes to 90+ days The good news is that about 82% of CP05 reviews end with the exact refund amount originally claimed. Don't worry too much - this is a routine verification, not an audit. Just sit tight and keep checking your transcript once a week.

Thank you for breaking this down so clearly. I've been trying to understand what's happening with mine. So the steps I should follow are: 1) Wait for the review to complete, 2) Check my transcript weekly, 3) Only contact IRS if it goes beyond 60 days?

I just got my CP05 notice yesterday and almost had a panic attack! I had no idea what an 'income verification review' even meant - thought I was being audited. The notice uses all this terminology like 'information matching' and 'verification protocols' that made me think I'd done something wrong. This helps put my mind at ease.

I'm concerned about this too. Does the verification process affect future tax returns? Will I be more likely to get flagged again next year if I get a CP05 this year?

I'm in the same boat right now. Got my CP05 on March 12th and still waiting. I filed on January 29th and was really counting on having that money by now for some car repairs. The notice said to wait 60 days before contacting them, but that puts me at May 11th which feels like forever. I've been checking WMR and my transcript daily but no changes. Has anyone actually seen their refund after getting this notice? I'm starting to worry they'll just keep delaying.

Got the dreaded CP05 last year and waited 73 days (but who's counting? 😂) with zero updates. Finally broke down and called the IRS - which was its own special circle of hold-music hell. After 2 hours of "your call is important to us" on repeat, I discovered Claimyr.com and it was a game-changer. Got connected to an actual human at the IRS in about 25 minutes. Turns out they were just waiting for one verification that had been completed weeks earlier but never processed. The agent pushed it through and I had my refund 9 days later. Sometimes you just need to talk to a human to unstick the process.

CP05 notices have increased by about 35% this tax season according to the Taxpayer Advocate Service data. If you check the official IRS operations page (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations), they're currently reporting a backlog of verification cases. A few things that might help while waiting: 1. Check your tax transcript online through the IRS website - look for transaction codes 570 (refund hold) and 971 (notice issued) 2. If you see code 571 appear, that means the hold was released 3. Watch for code 846 which indicates your refund has been scheduled The online transcript updates more frequently than the Where's My Refund tool, so it's your best resource for real-time status.

I've been tracking my transcript for weeks now. I have both the 570 and 971 codes with the same date (4/15/2024). From my previous experience with the IRS, when these codes share the same date, it usually indicates a simple verification rather than a serious issue. Would you agree with that assessment?

OMG I just checked my transcript after reading this and I've got all these codes I don't understand! 🤯 There's a 570 from last week and a 971 dated for next Monday. Does that mean they're sending me another notice?? I thought the CP05 was the only notice I'd get!

Last year I had the exact same situation - got the CP05 in February, had the 570/971 combo on my transcript for about 7 weeks, then suddenly one morning I checked and saw code 846 with a direct deposit date for the following Wednesday. The money showed up exactly on that date. The whole process took 58 days from filing to refund, which was frustrating but at least it resolved without me having to send anything in.

I've been through three CP05 notices in the last five years. Here's what works: 1. Don't call before the 60 days are up - complete waste of time 2. Don't send any documents unless specifically requested 3. Set up direct deposit if you haven't already - it's faster once approved 4. Check your transcript weekly, not daily (saves sanity) My most recent CP05 took 52 days to resolve. The first took 41 days. The middle one took 78 days because they needed additional verification. In all cases, I received my full refund amount. If you absolutely need the money sooner, consider a tax refund advance loan from a reputable company, but be aware of the fees.

Isn't it frustrating how we're expected to file perfectly and on time, but then the IRS can just hold our money for months with a vague explanation? I received a CP05 in early March. My return included some gig work and rental income, which seems to trigger these reviews more often. After 47 anxious days of waiting, my transcript updated and the refund was deposited three days later. What helped me was understanding that this is actually a good anti-fraud measure, even though it's inconvenient for us honest filers. Think about it - would you rather have this delay or have someone steal your identity and claim your refund? I empathize with your stress though. The uncertainty is the hardest part.
