Still waiting for my 2023 tax refund status update - filed last month

Is anyone else experiencing this? I can't seem to get any update on my 2023 tax refund status. I e-filed my return on February 12th. I understand the IRS wasn't starting to process returns until February 15th this year, but I figured they would have at least updated to show they received my return by now. It's been over three weeks and when I check the "Where's My Refund" tool, it still says my information can't be found. Starting to get worried since I'm counting on that money for some upcoming expenses. Should I be concerned at this point or is the IRS just super backed up this year? Has anyone filed around the same time and already gotten their status updated?

Don't panic yet! This is actually pretty common early in tax season. The IRS "Where's My Refund" tool often doesn't show any information until your return has been accepted and moved into processing, which can take longer than people expect. Since you e-filed on February 12th and the IRS didn't start processing until February 15th, you're still within the normal timeframe. The IRS typically says to allow 21 days for e-filed returns before contacting them, and that clock usually starts when they begin processing, not when you submit. Also, the IRS systems don't update in real-time - they usually update overnight once per day. Try checking the status again using the exact information from your tax return (exact refund amount, filing status, and SSN). Sometimes even small discrepancies can result in "information not found" errors.

Thanks for the info! I'm in a similar boat but filed on Feb 9th. When you say "exact refund amount" - should I be using the amount before or after the fees if I paid for tax preparation through my filing software?

You should always use the exact refund amount shown on your tax return (line 35a on Form 1040), not the amount you'll receive after any tax prep fees are deducted. This is the full refund amount calculated on your return. For the timing question, while 21 days is the standard guideline, many people are seeing longer waits this filing season, especially for returns filed before the official processing start date. If it's been more than 21 days since February 15th and you still see no update, then it might be worth calling the IRS refund hotline.

After waiting 3 weeks with no update on my refund status, I tried using https://taxr.ai to analyze my return and found out my refund was delayed because of a mismatch between my reported W-2 income and what my employer submitted. The system flagged exactly which numbers were off and helped me prepare for an amended return. The really useful part was that it showed me the specific line items that would likely trigger a review. Once I fixed that one issue, my refund was processed within a week. Might be worth checking if there's something similar happening with your return.

How does this work exactly? Does it just check the refund status for you or does it actually analyze your full tax return? I filed with TurboTax and I'm wondering if this would tell me something different.

I'm skeptical. How would this service know what the IRS has on file for you? I thought only the IRS has access to that information. Seems like another paid service trying to get money from anxious filers.

It doesn't just check the refund status - it actually scans your full tax return documents and checks for common issues that typically cause delays. It uses the same validation systems tax professionals use to identify potential problems. The service doesn't need access to IRS systems directly. Instead, it analyzes your return against known IRS validation rules and verification processes. It basically runs the same checks the IRS will run before they process your refund. For example, mine flagged that I had transposed two digits in my W-2 income amount, which wouldn't match what my employer reported.

I need to follow up on my skeptical comment! I actually tried https://taxr.ai after continuing to see no updates on my refund status for over a month. It found that I had incorrectly entered an EIN number for one of my 1099 forms, which was causing my return to be flagged for manual review. What impressed me was how quickly it identified the issue - literally just took a few minutes after I uploaded my documents. I was able to file an amended return right away rather than waiting weeks more for an IRS notice. My refund was approved just days after submitting the correction. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind alone!

If you really need to talk to someone at the IRS about your refund status but can't get through on their regular lines, I'd recommend trying https://claimyr.com - they basically hold your place in the IRS phone queue and call you when an agent is about to pick up. I wasted hours on hold before finding this service. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c After weeks of seeing "information cannot be found" on the Where's My Refund tool, I finally got through to an actual IRS agent who confirmed they had my return but it was in a manual review queue due to the Earned Income Credit. At least I got a real explanation instead of stressing about the unknown!

Wait, there's a service that waits on hold with the IRS for you? How does that even work? Does it just keep calling until it gets through?

This sounds too good to be true. The IRS phone system is notoriously terrible. Are you sure this isn't just some scam to collect phone numbers or personal info? I've been burned before by "tax help" services.

It uses an automated system to wait in the IRS queue for you. When you sign up, you enter which IRS department you need to reach, and their system calls and navigates the IRS phone tree. When an agent is about to come on the line, it calls your phone and connects you directly to the agent. It's not a scam - they don't ask for any tax information or personal details beyond your phone number to call you back. They're just solving the hold time problem, not accessing your tax info. The service doesn't even talk to the IRS agent - you do. It just eliminates you having to listen to the hold music for hours.

I've got to admit I was completely wrong about Claimyr! After waiting on hold myself for 2+ hours and getting disconnected twice, I decided to try it out of desperation. The service called me back in about 40 minutes with an IRS agent on the line. Found out my return was held up because they couldn't verify my identity - something the "Where's My Refund" tool never indicated. The agent transferred me to the ID verification department, and I was able to verify on the spot. The agent said my refund should be processed within 9 days now. That single call saved me weeks of waiting and wondering!

Pro tip: If you used direct deposit, check your bank account directly instead of just relying on the Where's My Refund tool. Sometimes the money gets deposited before the tool updates. Happened to me last year - I was checking the tool daily while the money was already sitting in my account for 3 days!

This happened to me too! I was freaking out because the status was stuck on "return received" for weeks, then randomly checked my bank account and boom - full refund was there. The IRS tracking system can definitely lag behind the actual deposit.

Exactly! The IRS systems don't always communicate with each other in real-time. The processing department might release your refund while the status update for the tracking tool is queued in a different system. Another thing to check is whether you have any past-due federal or state debts. Things like unpaid student loans, child support, or state taxes can result in your refund being offset (reduced) or delayed. The Where's My Refund tool doesn't always show this information clearly.

Did you check both the IRS website AND the IRS2Go app? Sometimes one updates before the other. Also make sure ur entering the EXACT info from ur return - even a dollar off will give u the "information can't be found" message.

I find the app actually updates faster than the website. Got my status on the app a full day before it showed up on the website version. Worth trying both!
