Received CP09 Notice Letter - When Will I Get My Refund?
Has anyone gotten a CP09 notice letter this year? I'm wondering if you received your refund after responding and how long it typically takes? I mailed my response on March 25th, 2025 and also submitted it online on March 24th. It's been about 6 weeks now and I'm still waiting for my refund... getting really anxious here! This was for the Earned Income Credit that I apparently qualified for but didn't claim. Anyone gone through this process before? Help pleaseee!!! The IRS website isn't giving me any useful updates.

I've helped several clients with CP09 notices this year. This notice means the IRS thinks you might qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) but didn't claim it on your return. It's actually good news because you could get additional money! After you respond to the CP09 (which you've done both ways - smart move), the IRS typically takes 8-12 weeks to process and issue your refund. So you're still within the normal timeframe. The 6-week mark is unfortunately just the halfway point for many people. Since you submitted both online and by mail, they'll likely process whichever they receive first, and ignore the duplicate. You can check your refund status using the "Where's My Refund" tool on the IRS website, but it might not show updated info until they process your response completely.

•I got the same notice but I'm confused - is this something I should be worried about? And do I need to amend my whole tax return or just fill out that form they sent?

•You definitely shouldn't be worried - a CP09 notice is actually potentially good news! The IRS thinks you might qualify for money you didn't claim. You don't need to amend your entire return. Just complete the form they sent you (usually there's a questionnaire about your eligibility for the EITC) and return it by the deadline they specified. This is a separate process from an amended return.

I went through this exact situation last year and was pulling my hair out waiting! What helped me was using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) to analyze my CP09 notice. I uploaded it and the system explained exactly what I needed to do and the typical timeframe. It also showed me how to properly track my refund status - turns out I was checking the wrong place on the IRS website. The best part was it calculated my potential EITC amount so I had a good idea what to expect. Saved me so much stress during the waiting period!

•Does this taxr.ai thing work for other IRS notices too? I got something called a CP2000 and I'm completely lost.

•How accurate was the amount it calculated compared to what you actually ended up getting? I'm trying to figure out if I should expect like $500 or $2,000 and the uncertainty is killing me.

•Yes, it definitely works for other notices too including CP2000 notices. It can analyze pretty much any IRS correspondence and translate all that confusing tax language into simple explanations. The calculation was surprisingly accurate in my case. I was estimated to receive about $1,850 and ended up getting $1,793. The small difference was due to some rounding and calculation methods, but it was close enough that I could budget properly while waiting. Definitely helped with the anxiety of not knowing if I was getting a small amount or something substantial.

Just wanted to update that I tried taxr.ai after seeing the recommendation here. It was super helpful! Uploaded my CP09 notice and it immediately told me I was likely eligible for around $1,350 in EITC refund. The analysis also explained why the IRS thought I qualified when I hadn't claimed it (I had entered my income correctly but skipped the EITC section completely). It even gave me a timeline showing I should expect my refund by mid-June based on current processing times. Now I'm not stressing about checking the IRS site every day!

When I got my CP09 notice last year, I tried calling the IRS for weeks with no luck. After 7 attempts and hours on hold, I finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and it was a game-changer. They got me connected to an actual IRS agent in about 25 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The agent confirmed my CP09 response was received and told me exactly when to expect my refund. Saved me weeks of anxiety wondering if my form was even received.

•How does this Claimyr thing actually work? I've been trying to call the IRS for days and keep getting disconnected after waiting forever.

•Yeah right. There's no way to skip the IRS phone queue. Sounds like a scam to me. The IRS is literally designed to be inaccessible.

•It uses a system that navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold for you. Then when it finally reaches an agent, it calls your phone and connects you directly. It's basically like having someone else wait on hold instead of you. I was super skeptical too at first! I thought the same thing - that nothing could beat the IRS phone system. But it actually works. They don't skip the queue or anything shady - they just handle the painful waiting part so you don't have to sit there for hours. The agent I spoke with was definitely a real IRS employee who had access to all my tax info and could answer my specific questions.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I tried Claimyr after posting my skeptical comment here, and it actually worked. After waiting on hold for nearly 3 hours earlier this week and getting disconnected, I was connected to an IRS agent in 37 minutes using their service. The agent confirmed my CP09 form was received on April 2nd and said my refund should be issued within 2 more weeks. She also explained why my online status wasn't updating (apparently there's a separate system for EITC claims). Definitely worth it just to get an actual answer instead of stressing for weeks.

Don't panic! I had this same experience last tax season. I got my CP09 notice in March, responded in early April, and got my refund mid-June. The EITC added about $3,700 to my refund which was amazing! One thing I learned - checking the "Where's My Refund" tool won't show updates for a while with these types of adjustments. I called the IRS after 8 weeks and they confirmed it was still processing normally even though the online status hadn't changed.

•Did they pay you interest for the wait time? I heard they're supposed to pay interest if they take too long with your refund.

•Yes, they actually did pay interest! It wasn't a huge amount - about $37 extra on top of my EITC amount. The interest starts accruing after 45 days from when you filed your original return (not from when you responded to the CP09). The interest payment showed up as a separate line item on my account transcript, which you can request online through the IRS website if you want to see the breakdown of everything.

Has anyone else noticed that the IRS is sending out way more CP09 notices than usual this year? I work at a community tax center and we've seen at least 20 clients with these notices in the past month alone. Most got their refunds within 10-12 weeks after responding.

•I heard they updated their systems to better identify people who might qualify for EITC but didn't claim it. Probably why they're sending more notices.

•That makes sense. The new system does seem to be more accurate too. Of the clients we've helped, about 90% actually did qualify for the credit once we went through their information. In previous years, we saw more "false positives" where the IRS sent notices but the people didn't actually qualify when we reviewed their situation more carefully.

I'm going through the exact same situation right now! Got my CP09 notice in early March and responded both online and by mail just like you did. It's been about 7 weeks for me and I'm also getting anxious checking the IRS website every day with no updates. Reading through these comments is actually really reassuring - it sounds like 8-12 weeks is totally normal for CP09 processing, so we're both still in the typical timeframe. I had no idea the "Where's My Refund" tool doesn't update properly for EITC adjustments, which explains why I keep seeing the same generic message. Thanks for posting this question - you're definitely not alone in the waiting game! Hopefully we'll both see our refunds soon.

•I'm in the same boat as you and @09d033c858ec! Got my CP09 notice in late February and responded about 8 weeks ago. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking, especially when you're not sure if you'll get $500 or $3000+. What's helped me stay sane is setting a reminder to check just once a week instead of daily - the stress of checking constantly and seeing no updates was making it worse. Based on what everyone's shared here, it sounds like we're all still well within the normal processing window. Really appreciate this thread existing - it's so much better than the generic IRS website info that basically just says "wait longer" without any real context from people who've actually been through it!

I'm dealing with the same CP09 situation and the waiting is absolutely killing me! Got my notice in mid-March, responded both online and by mail just like you, and it's been about 5 weeks now. Reading through everyone's experiences here is honestly the most helpful information I've found anywhere - way better than the IRS website which just keeps saying "allow additional time for processing." It's really reassuring to hear that 8-12 weeks is normal and that the "Where's My Refund" tool doesn't update properly for EITC cases. I was starting to think something went wrong since I never see any status changes. The fact that multiple people here have gotten their refunds plus interest after waiting 10-12 weeks gives me hope that we're all still on track. Thanks for starting this thread - it's so much better to hear from real people who've actually been through this process rather than trying to decode the confusing IRS website information!

•I'm so glad I found this thread too! I just received my CP09 notice last week and was completely panicking thinking I did something wrong. Reading everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful - especially learning that this is actually potentially good news and that 8-12 weeks is the normal processing time. I was about to stress myself out checking the IRS website daily, but now I know it won't show useful updates anyway. Going to follow the advice about checking just once a week instead. It's amazing how much more reassuring it is to hear from real people who've actually been through this rather than trying to figure out what the official IRS language actually means. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and outcomes - it really helps to know what to expect! Fingers crossed we all get our refunds soon.

It’s been 11 weeks since the irs has gotten my cp09 work sheet and they told me 4-6 weeks from the 11th of July to receive my refund

That's frustrating that you're at 11 weeks already! It sounds like they gave you a new timeline of 4-6 weeks from July 11th, which would put you at mid to late August for your refund. While that's longer than the typical 8-12 weeks most people here have experienced, it's not unheard of - sometimes certain cases just take longer to process. The fact that they gave you a specific new timeframe when you called suggests your case is actively being worked on, which is a good sign. I'd recommend keeping a record of when they told you to expect it (4-6 weeks from July 11th) so you can reference that if you need to call again. Hang in there - I know 11+ weeks feels like forever, but based on what others have shared here, you should still get your refund plus interest for the extended delay. The interest starts accruing after 45 days from your original filing date, so that extra wait time should at least earn you a bit more money on top of your EITC amount.

•I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with such a long wait time @3cdaf9de8685! 11 weeks is definitely on the longer side, but unfortunately delays like this aren't uncommon with CP09 cases, especially this year. The good news is that they gave you a specific updated timeline, which usually means your case is actively being processed rather than just sitting in a queue. Since you're well past the typical processing time, you should definitely be entitled to interest payments on top of your EITC refund when it finally comes through. The interest can add up to a decent amount after this long of a delay. If you don't receive your refund by the end of their new 4-6 week window (so by late August), I'd recommend calling again or potentially reaching out to the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you continue having issues. They can sometimes help expedite cases that have been delayed significantly beyond normal processing times. Keep us updated on how it goes - your experience will definitely help others who might be facing similar delays!

I'm currently in week 9 of waiting for my CP09 refund and this thread has been such a lifesaver! I was getting really worried that something went wrong, especially since the IRS website keeps showing the same unhelpful status message. Reading everyone's experiences here - from the 8-12 week typical timeframes to the fact that the "Where's My Refund" tool doesn't update properly for EITC cases - has really helped manage my expectations and anxiety. I had no idea that interest payments kick in after 45 days, so that's actually a nice bonus to look forward to. For anyone else in the waiting phase, I found it helpful to call and confirm they received my response (used one of the callback services mentioned here after failing to get through on my own). The agent confirmed everything was processing normally even though my online status hasn't changed at all since I submitted my response. Fingers crossed we all see our refunds soon! Thanks again to everyone who shared their timelines and tips - this real-world info is so much more valuable than the generic guidance on the IRS website.

•I'm at week 8 myself and this thread has been absolutely invaluable! Like you, I was starting to panic thinking I'd made some mistake or that my response got lost in the mail. The fact that so many people here have gone through the exact same process and timeline really puts things in perspective. What really helped me was learning from @e663819f897e and @db2df52f7d9f about using Claimyr to actually get through to an IRS agent. I was skeptical at first but ended up trying it last week and finally got confirmation that my CP09 response was received and is processing normally. The agent even explained that the online tools don't update properly for these types of cases, which explains why we're all seeing the same generic messages. It's also encouraging to hear from people like @b83406405c6c who ended up getting significant amounts ($3,700+) plus interest after their wait. Makes the anxiety feel more worth it knowing this could be a substantial refund rather than just a small adjustment. Hang in there - sounds like we're both right in that normal 8-12 week window that most people experience!

I'm at week 10 of waiting for my CP09 refund and this thread has been incredibly reassuring! Like many of you, I got my notice in March, responded both online and by mail, and have been anxiously checking the IRS website daily with no useful updates. What's really helped me stay patient is reading about everyone's similar experiences here - especially learning that the "Where's My Refund" tool basically doesn't work for EITC adjustments, which explains why I keep seeing the same generic "processing" message. I had no idea this was normal! I finally bit the bullet and used Claimyr last week after seeing the positive reviews here. Was connected to an actual IRS agent in about 30 minutes (after weeks of trying to call on my own with no success). She confirmed my response was received and said I should expect my refund within the next 2-3 weeks, plus interest since I'm past the 45-day mark. For anyone still in the early weeks of waiting - hang in there! This thread shows that 8-12 weeks is completely normal, and many people end up with substantial refunds plus interest. The waiting is brutal but it sounds like it's usually worth it in the end. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - it's so much more helpful than anything on the official IRS website!

•I'm so glad you finally got through to an agent and got confirmation that everything is on track! It's really encouraging to hear that you should be getting your refund in the next 2-3 weeks after 10 weeks of waiting. The interest payment is definitely a nice bonus for having to wait so long. Your experience with Claimyr mirrors what several others have shared here - I was skeptical about it working at first, but it seems like a legitimate way to bypass the nightmare of trying to get through to the IRS on your own. The peace of mind of actually talking to someone who can see your account and confirm things are processing normally is worth so much. Thanks for the update on your timeline! It's really helpful for those of us who are still in the earlier weeks of waiting to see the progression and know that people are actually getting their refunds resolved. Fingers crossed you get that refund soon - and please update us when it comes through so we know the final timeline!

I'm at week 7 of waiting for my CP09 refund and this entire thread has been such a relief to find! I got my notice in early March, responded both online and by mail like many of you, and have been driving myself crazy checking the IRS website daily with zero helpful updates. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly reassuring - especially learning that 8-12 weeks is completely normal and that the "Where's My Refund" tool basically doesn't work for EITC cases. I had no idea this was standard and was starting to think something went wrong with my submission. The success stories from people like @b83406405c6c getting $3,700 plus interest and @dc11f34c4971 getting confirmation from an IRS agent that everything is on track really helps with the anxiety. I'm definitely going to try using Claimyr or taxr.ai based on all the positive feedback here - seems like a much better option than continuing to bang my head against the wall trying to call the IRS directly. Thanks to everyone who's shared their timelines and outcomes! This real-world information from people who've actually been through the process is infinitely more valuable than the vague guidance on the IRS website. Here's hoping we all get our refunds soon - the waiting game is brutal but it sounds like it's usually worth it in the end!

•I'm at week 6 myself and found this thread just in time before I started really panicking! Like you, I've been checking the IRS website obsessively and getting nowhere. It's such a relief to learn that the online tools basically don't work for CP09 cases - I thought I was going crazy seeing the same generic message every day. What's really encouraging is seeing the pattern here of people getting substantial refunds after the wait. I had no idea about the interest payments either - that's actually a decent consolation for having to wait so long. I'm definitely going to look into those callback services people mentioned since trying to call the IRS directly has been completely futile. Thanks for sharing your timeline @0d3f334e41ef! It's so helpful to see where others are in the process. Hopefully we'll both be posting success stories in a few more weeks. The waiting is absolutely brutal but this thread has given me so much more confidence that everything is processing normally.

I'm at week 5 of waiting for my CP09 refund and stumbled across this thread at the perfect time! Got my notice in late March, responded both online and by mail just like everyone else here, and have been stressing about the lack of updates on the IRS website. This thread has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea that 8-12 weeks was normal processing time or that the "Where's My Refund" tool doesn't update properly for EITC adjustments. I was starting to worry that my response got lost or that I filled something out wrong. Reading about people like @b83406405c6c getting $3,700+ and @dc11f34c4971 getting confirmation from an IRS agent that everything is on track really helps with the anxiety. I'm definitely going to try one of those callback services mentioned here since my attempts to call the IRS directly have been completely useless. It's so reassuring to hear from real people who've actually been through this process rather than trying to decode the confusing official guidance. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and timelines! This community support is exactly what I needed to stop checking the IRS website multiple times a day and just be patient. Fingers crossed we all get our refunds soon - the waiting is tough but it sounds like it's usually worth it in the end!

•Welcome to the CP09 waiting club! Week 5 puts you right in the early part of what everyone here has confirmed is a totally normal timeline. I'm at week 3 myself and was starting to get anxious until I found this thread - it's been such a lifesaver for understanding what to actually expect. The fact that so many people here have gone through the exact same experience (getting the notice, responding both ways, seeing no website updates, then eventually getting substantial refunds plus interest) really shows this is just how the process works. It's frustrating that the IRS systems don't give us better visibility, but at least we know we're not alone! I'm planning to try one of those callback services around week 6 or 7 just to get confirmation everything is processing normally. Based on what others have shared, it seems worth it for the peace of mind. Hang in there - sounds like you're right on track for a good outcome in a few more weeks!

I'm at week 4 of waiting for my CP09 refund and this thread has been absolutely amazing to find! Got my notice in early April, responded both online and by mail like so many others here, and was starting to get really worried about the complete lack of updates on the IRS website. Reading through everyone's experiences has been incredibly reassuring - I had no idea that 8-12 weeks was the standard processing time or that the online refund tools basically don't work for EITC cases. I was checking daily and seeing the same generic "still processing" message, thinking something must be wrong. The success stories here are really encouraging, especially hearing about people getting substantial amounts like @b83406405c6c with $3,700+ and learning about the interest payments after 45 days. I'm definitely going to look into using Claimyr or taxr.ai based on all the positive feedback - seems much better than my failed attempts to call the IRS directly. Thanks to everyone who's shared their timelines and kept updating us on their progress! This real community support is so much more helpful than anything I could find on the official IRS website. It's such a relief to know I'm not alone in this waiting game and that there's light at the end of the tunnel!

•You're definitely in good company here! I'm at week 2 myself and was already starting to worry until I found this incredibly helpful thread. It's amazing how much more reassuring it is to hear from real people who've actually been through this process rather than trying to interpret the vague official IRS guidance. What really strikes me about everyone's experiences is how consistent the pattern is - get the notice, respond both ways, see no website updates for weeks, then eventually get a substantial refund plus interest. It's frustrating that the IRS systems don't provide better visibility into the process, but at least we know what to expect now. I'm taking notes on all the tools people have mentioned (Claimyr, taxr.ai) for when I get further along in the process. For now, I'm going to follow the advice about checking the website just once a week instead of daily to save my sanity. Thanks to everyone for sharing their journeys - this community support makes such a huge difference in managing the anxiety of waiting!
