Is California EDD unemployment up or down right now? Can't access my claim

Okay so I'm trying to figure out what's going on with the California EDD unemployment portal today. I logged into UI Online this morning to certify for my weekly claim and got some weird error message that just kicked me back to the login screen. Now I can't tell if the whole system is down, if it's just my account, or if something changed with my claim status. I've been certifying every two weeks without any problems for the past couple months and now suddenly nothing works. Is the California EDD website up or down right now? Has anyone else been having trouble getting into their account today? I really can't afford to miss my certification window because I'm already behind on rent and any delay in my UI benefits would be a disaster right now.

yeah the site was definitely being weird earlier today, I couldn't get in either around 9am but it came back up around 10:30 for me. try again now

just tried again, still getting the same error. might be something specific to my account then ugh

California EDD's UI Online goes down for maintenance sometimes without warning. usually comes back within a few hours. if it's been more than a day though that's a different story

0 coins

There are a few different things that could be happening here. First, California EDD does perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on UI Online which can take the system fully offline for anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Second, individual accounts sometimes get flagged or locked for security reasons totally unrelated to your claim status. Third, and this is important - if your claim went into adjudication recently, you might be seeing a different kind of access issue where your certification options are restricted until the adjudication is resolved. Check if you're getting a specific error code anywhere on the page because that'll tell you a lot about which situation you're actually dealing with.

0 coins

it just says 'service unavailable' with no error code. doesn't sound like adjudication then?

0 coins

A generic 'service unavailable' message usually does point to a system-wide outage rather than an account-specific issue. Give it another hour or two and try from a different browser or device if possible. If it's still down after that, you may want to call EDD directly to find out if there's something on your claim that's causing it.

0 coins

this is so helpful thank you, I was having the same question about whether it was my account or the whole site

0 coins

When I was going through my UI claim last year I had this exact issue twice. Both times it was a system outage on EDD's end, not anything wrong with my claim. The thing nobody tells you is that California EDD doesn't really have a reliable public status page like other websites do, so you're kind of left guessing. What finally helped me was finding Claimyr at claimyr.com - it's a service that gets you through to an actual EDD phone agent without you having to sit on hold for hours. When the portal goes down and you need answers fast, being able to reach a live person who can check your claim status directly is genuinely useful. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - saved me so much stress when I needed to know if my weekly claim had actually gone through or not.

0 coins

wait so it can actually get you through to someone at EDD? I've tried calling like 6 times and just get the automated system or busy signals

0 coins

yeah that was me too before I found it. the regular EDD phone line is basically impossible to get through on your own especially when there's a system outage because everyone else is calling at the same time

0 coins

gonna look into this, I've been trying to reach EDD for two weeks about my adjudication and can't get anyone on the phone

0 coins

THE EDD WEBSITE GOES DOWN CONSTANTLY AND THEY NEVER TELL ANYONE. I've been filing unemployment claims for years now and I swear the system is down like once a month minimum. What kills me is when it goes down right before the certification deadline and then EDD acts like you had plenty of time to certify even though THEIR system was broken. I've had to call and explain this situation twice and the agents act like you're making it up. The whole UI Online system is a joke honestly.

0 coins

To be fair California EDD does have provisions for extending your certification window if you can document that their system was unavailable. You just have to actually get through to someone to request it which is its own challenge lol

0 coins

right GETTING THROUGH TO SOMEONE is the whole problem. it's circular. system is down so you can't certify, call to report it but can't get through, miss your window, now you have to explain everything

0 coins

this thread is stressing me out because my certification window closes tomorrow and I've been having the same issue all day

0 coins

Here's what I'd recommend doing right now while you wait for the system to come back up: screenshot the error message you're getting and note the exact time and date. California EDD can't hold a system outage against you for missing a certification deadline if you have documentation showing their portal was down. Also check EDD's Twitter/X account because they occasionally post about system outages there even though they don't have a dedicated status page. The other thing worth knowing is that even if you miss your exact certification date due to a system issue, you typically have a grace period - your claim won't automatically close the second you miss the window.

0 coins

Oh I didn't know about the grace period, that's actually really reassuring. How long is the grace period usually?

0 coins

It varies but generally you have a few days before your claim gets flagged as inactive. The key is to certify as soon as the system is back up and if there's any gap you can explain it when asked. Just don't wait weeks thinking it'll sort itself out.

0 coins

good advice about the screenshot, I wish someone had told me that when I missed my window during a system outage a while back

0 coins

does anyone know if the mobile app works when the website is down? I downloaded the EDD app but never really used it

0 coins

The EDD mobile app and UI Online website generally share the same backend infrastructure, so when one is down the other is usually down too. They're not independent systems.

0 coins

oh that makes sense, guess I'll just keep refreshing the website then

0 coins

I work in tech and can tell you that 'service unavailable' errors from California EDD almost always mean one of two things: either they're doing maintenance on their servers, or there's been a traffic spike from too many people trying to access the system at once. Both are EDD's problem not yours. The frustrating reality is that UI Online was built on pretty outdated infrastructure and it genuinely cannot handle surges in traffic well. This is especially bad on Monday mornings when everyone's trying to certify at the same time and when there's been news about any changes to unemployment rules.

0 coins

I did try to log in on a Monday morning so maybe that's exactly what happened. makes me feel better that it's probably not my specific account

0 coins

Yeah Monday mornings and the first week of each month are the worst times to try to access UI Online. If you can, try certifying later in the week and later in the day - Thursday or Friday afternoon tends to be much more stable.

0 coins

this is genuinely useful info I had no idea timing mattered for the website stability

0 coins

I'm in the same boat as OP and I'm panicking a little. My certification deadline is literally tomorrow and the site has been down all day. I'm in adjudication already and I was told I still need to keep certifying even while the adjudication is being resolved or I could lose my benefits entirely. Is that true? And what happens if I physically cannot certify because the website is broken?

0 coins

Yes it is absolutely true that you need to keep filing weekly certifications even while your claim is in adjudication - this is one of the most important things claimants get wrong. If you stop certifying you can lose the right to back payments even if your adjudication resolves in your favor. For your deadline situation: try calling EDD first thing in the morning to report the outage and document your attempt. Also try certifying by phone through EDD's Tele-Cert line as an alternative to the website.

0 coins

wait there's a phone certification option?? I had no idea that existed. is it the same number as the main EDD line?

0 coins

Tele-Cert has its own dedicated number separate from the main EDD customer service line. You can find it on EDD's website under the certify for benefits section. It walks you through the certification questions via an automated phone system - no need to speak with an agent.

0 coins

For anyone in this thread who needs to actually reach a live EDD agent, I want to mention Claimyr again because I've seen a lot of people saying they can't get through on the phones. I know it sounds too good to be true but it genuinely worked for me when I had to sort out a situation where I wasn't sure if my certifications had actually processed during an outage. The site is claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 showing exactly how it works. When you're stressed about your unemployment claim and need real answers not just hold music, having a way to reach an actual person at EDD makes a huge difference.

0 coins

I actually tried this after seeing your earlier comment and I'm waiting for a callback right now. fingers crossed

0 coins

ok fine I'll check it out, I've tried everything else at this point

0 coins

Going to try this if the site is still down tomorrow morning. I can't afford to just wait indefinitely

0 coins

lol I refreshed this thread like 20 times today because I have the same exact problem. did anyone ever confirm if the california edd site is back up yet

0 coins

I was able to get in around 3pm, so it seems like it came back up this afternoon

0 coins

THANK YOU just checked and I'm in, certified for my week finally

0 coins

same, just got in! certified successfully. what a stressful day for literally nothing

0 coins

Now that the site seems to be back up for people, I want to add some useful context for the future. California EDD's UI Online has a pattern of going down during high-traffic periods and the agency is genuinely slow to communicate about it. A few things that help: 1) Don't wait until the last day of your certification window to certify, always do it as early in the window as possible. 2) Bookmark the Tele-Cert phone option as a backup. 3) If you're in adjudication, be extra diligent about certifying because missing a certification during adjudication can complicate your case. 4) If you ever genuinely cannot certify due to a system issue, document everything and contact EDD as soon as possible to explain.

bookmarking this comment for future reference, super helpful breakdown

0 coins

Wish I had known the early certification tip before today. Going to start certifying on Sundays as soon as my window opens from now on.

0 coins

the adjudication point is so important and I feel like EDD doesn't make this nearly clear enough to people going through it

0 coins

Update: Claimyr actually worked for me. Got connected to a California EDD agent within a reasonable time and was able to confirm my weekly certifications are all showing up correctly in the system even though the portal was showing errors. The agent also confirmed there was a partial system outage affecting some accounts today. So for anyone panicking like I was - try the Tele-Cert option first for quick certification, and use claimyr.com if you need to actually talk to someone about your specific claim situation. Check out https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 for a walkthrough.

0 coins

This is really good to know. Did the agent say anything about whether missing the exact certification date due to the outage would cause any issues?

0 coins

She said as long as I certified within my window (even if late due to outage) there wouldn't be any issue. She also noted my account and said if anything flagged she'd see a record of the outage on their end.

0 coins

ok that's actually useful information. good to know EDD's internal records show the outage even if they don't communicate it publicly

0 coins

tangentially related but can someone explain the difference between UI online going 'down' vs your claim being 'on hold'? I've been telling people my claim is down but maybe I mean something different

0 coins

Good distinction to make. When UI Online is 'down' it means the website itself is experiencing technical issues and potentially nobody can access it. When your claim is 'on hold' or in adjudication, the website works fine for everyone else but your specific claim has been flagged for review and you may have limited options until it's resolved. Two totally different issues with different solutions.

0 coins

oh wow I think I've been confusing these. my claim might actually be in adjudication and not just a website outage. how do I tell the difference?

0 coins

If you can log in to UI Online and see your claim information but can't certify or see a notice about pending issues, that's adjudication. If you can't get into the site at all or get server errors, that's an outage. Check your inbox in UI Online too - adjudication usually comes with some kind of notice or letter.

0 coins

this thread helped me so much today honestly. going through unemployment for the first time and every little thing sends me into a spiral thinking I'm about to lose everything. good to know the site just goes down sometimes and it's not automatically a disaster

0 coins

First timer here too. The anxiety is real. This community has been way more helpful than anything EDD actually communicates.

0 coins

The lack of clear communication from California EDD genuinely does make the process more stressful than it needs to be. You're not overreacting - it's reasonable to worry when you're dependent on benefits and the system stops working without explanation. Glad this thread helped.

0 coins

FINALLY got through to EDD yesterday using Claimyr after fighting their phone system for literally two weeks about my claim. I was skeptical but my situation was getting urgent. For anyone on the fence - if you've been unable to reach a live agent through normal means and you genuinely need answers about your claim status, it's worth trying. claimyr.com is the site. I'm still frustrated with the EDD system in general but at least I got my questions answered.

0 coins

wow ok you were so against it earlier in this thread and now you're recommending it lol

0 coins

I know I know. desperate times. I still think EDD should just have a functioning phone system but here we are

0 coins

this is the most relatable arc in this whole thread honestly

0 coins

For anyone who finds this thread later via search: California EDD UI Online system status can fluctuate significantly, and the best places to check are EDD's official social media accounts and various California unemployment subreddits where people report real-time outages. The system is most stable Tuesday through Thursday between 10am and 4pm Pacific time based on my experience. Avoid Monday mornings, Friday afternoons, and early morning hours on any day for the most reliable access to your unemployment claim information.

the Tuesday-Thursday 10-4 window tip is real, I've noticed this too

marking this solved, site came back up and I certified successfully. thanks everyone
