Is California EDD unemployment website down right now?
Okay so I'm trying to file my weekly claim today and the UI Online portal is just not loading at all. I keep getting a blank screen or a timeout error when I try to log into myEDD. This is stressing me out because I don't want to miss my certification window. Is the California EDD unemployment system down for everyone or is it just me? I already tried two different browsers and cleared my cache. My internet is working fine for everything else. Has anyone else run into this today?

AuthorUgh okay at least its not just me. Do you know if there's anywhere official that says when it'll be back up?

California EDD doesn't always post outage notices in real time unfortunately. Your best bet is to check their Twitter/X account or just keep trying every 30 minutes or so.

This happens periodically with UI Online. California EDD does scheduled maintenance windows and they sometimes go longer than expected. The system has been known to go down on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Don't panic about your certification deadline - if the system is down and you can't file your weekly claim, EDD generally allows a grace period. You can also call to certify by phone using the EDD Tele-Cert line at 1-866-333-4606 as a backup option when the website is unavailable.

AuthorOh I didn't know about Tele-Cert! That's really helpful. Do I need anything specific to use it?

You'll need your Social Security number and your EDD Customer Account Number. The system walks you through the same questions as the online form. It works pretty well as a backup.

Tele-Cert saved me twice when the website was down. Definitely keep that number handy every week just in case.

I had the same issue last week and spent hours trying to get through to an actual EDD agent to figure out if my claim was affected. Kept getting busy signals or the automated system hanging up on me. Someone here actually told me about a service called Claimyr - you go to claimyr.com and it basically calls EDD on your behalf and waits in the hold queue, then calls you back when an agent is on the line. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works. Honestly was skeptical but it got me connected to a real EDD rep within a couple hours when I couldn't get through any other way.

AuthorWait this is actually a real thing? I might need this if the site stays down and I need to talk to someone about my claim.

I've heard of Claimyr. My cousin used it when she had an adjudication issue and couldn't get a human on the phone for weeks. Said it worked.

is it safe to use tho? like what info do they need

For what it's worth, California EDD unemployment system outages usually don't affect your claim status or payment schedule. The back-end processing continues even when the UI Online portal is inaccessible to claimants. Your bigger concern would be if the outage extends past your certification deadline, which is why having the Tele-Cert backup option is important. Also worth noting - you can check your claim status and payment info through the EDD website's separate status check tool even when UI Online is fully down sometimes.

AuthorThat's reassuring to hear that payments still process. I just really don't want to miss my certification window.

how long does an outage usually last? this one has been going on since at least 8am

EDD UI Online goes down more than people realize. I've been on unemployment twice and both times had random outages right when I needed to certify. The Tele-Cert phone line is legitimately the best backup - I actually prefer it now because it's faster than the website on a normal day too. You just call, punch in your info, answer the weekly questions. Takes like 4 minutes.

AuthorI just tried Tele-Cert and it actually worked! Going through the questions now. Thank you so much for the tip!

Great! Make sure you answer the job search questions carefully - same rules apply as online certification. You need to have completed your required job search activities for the week.

THE EDD WEBSITE HAS BEEN BROKEN SINCE FOREVER. I swear they never fix anything, every other week there's some new problem. How are people supposed to survive when they can't even certify because the website crashes?? I've had my payments delayed twice because of outages and EDD acts like it's my fault.

That's genuinely awful, a delayed payment because their own system went down is inexcusable. Did they eventually fix it or did you have to fight for it?

Leslie Parker
Had to call like 50 times over two weeks before I got through to an agent who actually fixed it. Never again am I relying solely on the website, I now do Tele-Cert every single week.

If an EDD outage ever causes a payment delay that you believe is their fault, you can request a waiver or expedited payment by speaking with an agent and explaining the situation. Document the dates you attempted to certify.

Quick tip - if you ever need to check whether EDD or other major websites are down, you can use downdetector.com. It crowd-sources reports from users so you can see in real time if others are having problems with the California EDD system or if it's isolated to your connection. Saved me a lot of troubleshooting time.

Downdetector is great for this. EDD usually shows up there within 30 minutes of a widespread outage starting.

Something else worth knowing - California EDD does post system maintenance notifications on their website at edd.ca.gov/about_edd/edd_website_updates.htm before planned outages. Not always with tons of advance notice but it's worth bookmarking. Unplanned outages obviously won't be listed there ahead of time but you'll sometimes see a banner when you hit the homepage.

Also their official social media accounts will sometimes post about major outages. @CA_EDD on Twitter/X is the official account and they do occasionally update about system issues.

Just circling back - for anyone who needs to actually speak to an EDD agent about something related to your claim during an outage (not just certify, but like a real claim issue), Claimyr at claimyr.com really is the move when you're getting nowhere with the phone lines. Check out the video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - it explains the whole process. I know it sounds too good to be true but it actually gets you through to a live EDD rep.

seconding this, my roommate used it for an adjudication problem and got through in like 2 hours vs spending weeks trying on her own

UPDATE: The UI Online portal came back up and I was able to certify for my weekly claim. For anyone else caught in the same situation - Tele-Cert at 1-866-333-4606 genuinely works as a backup and saved me from missing my deadline. Thanks everyone for the help!

Glad it worked out! Save that Tele-Cert number permanently, you'll probably need it again at some point.

Great news. For future reference, California EDD gives claimants until the end of the Saturday following your certification week to file if you miss the initial window, but it's always better not to cut it that close.

this thread is genuinely helpful, glad i found it

For anyone finding this thread later with the same question - California EDD UI Online experiences both planned maintenance outages (usually announced) and unplanned technical outages. Your options when the website is down are: 1) Tele-Cert by phone at 1-866-333-4606, 2) Wait for the system to come back up (usually within a few hours), 3) If it's a serious claim issue requiring an agent, services like Claimyr at claimyr.com can help you get through the phone queue. Your claim is not negatively affected by a system outage as long as you certify within your deadline window.

genuine question - if the edd website is down on the last day of my certification window am i just screwed? like is there any protection for that?
0 coins
Justin Trejo
You're not screwed - use Tele-Cert as your backup. As long as you certify by phone before midnight on your deadline day, it counts the same as doing it online. Call 1-866-333-4606.

Freya Ross
And if for some reason even Tele-Cert is unavailable and you genuinely cannot certify due to a documented system outage, you can contact EDD to explain the situation and request your certification be accepted late. Keep screenshots of any error messages as documentation.

okay that makes me feel way better, thank you both

does anyone know if outages affect direct deposit timing? like if the site is down does it delay when they send payments
0 coins
Freya Ross
Generally no - payment processing runs on backend systems separate from the UI Online claimant portal. An outage that affects your ability to log in typically doesn't delay already-approved payments from being sent to your bank or debit card.

Marina Hendrix
I can confirm this from personal experience. Had a bad outage week last year, still got my payment deposited on the normal schedule.

Alana Willis
also worth mentioning - if you're having login issues that aren't related to a full system outage (like account locked, password problems, etc.) those are handled differently. You'd need to contact the EDD tech support line or use the account recovery option rather than waiting out an outage.

Issac Nightingale
AuthorGood point, I should have been more specific in my original post about what kind of error I was getting. Mine was definitely a full outage situation though.

Sara Unger
yeah the error messages look different when its your account vs when the whole site is down

honestly I've just accepted that the EDD system is going to crash randomly forever and I plan my certification day around it. I do it first thing Tuesday morning and if it's down I immediately switch to Tele-Cert. no more waiting around hoping it comes back up. learned that lesson the hard way after a missed deadline situation that took 3 weeks to fix
0 coins
Tyler Murphy
That 3 weeks to fix sounds like a nightmare. Is that when you'd use something like Claimyr to actually get through to an agent faster? That's exactly the kind of situation it's designed for.
0 coins
Leslie Parker
honestly back then i didn't know about claimyr or id have used it in a heartbeat. took forever to get someone on the phone to fix the late certification issue

Justin Trejo
Solid strategy honestly. Tuesday first thing tends to be more stable than other days in my experience too.

one more thing to add for people finding this later - the EDD mobile experience is also pretty rough during high traffic periods even when the site isn't fully down. if you're on mobile and getting errors try switching to desktop browser or vice versa before assuming it's a full outage
0 coins
Issac Nightingale
AuthorThis is actually what I should have tried earlier before freaking out. I was on my phone.

mobile vs desktop makes a huge difference for EDD, their site is not great on mobile in general
