How to track my unemployment card in the mail from California EDD
So I just got approved for unemployment benefits last week and California EDD told me my EDD debit card would be arriving by mail. I have no idea how to track my unemployment card in the mail and the EDD website isn't making it very obvious where to go. I've been checking my mailbox every single day for the past 5 days and nothing has shown up yet. My claim shows as approved in UI Online and my first payment was supposedly released but I still have no card to actually access the money. Called the number on the EDD website a couple times but just get stuck in hold loops forever. Does anyone know if there's a way to actually track where the card is or how long it usually takes to arrive? I'm starting to stress out because I have rent due next week and this money is pretty critical right now.

The EDD debit card is issued by Bank of America (they handle the EDD prepaid debit card program). You can actually call Bank of America's EDD card line directly at 1-866-692-9374 to check the status of your card. They can tell you if it's been mailed and when it was sent out. Usually takes 7-10 business days from when your first payment is released. Also worth checking - if you already had a card from a previous claim within the last 3 years, EDD will reload that same card instead of sending a new one.

AuthorOh wow I didn't know Bank of America handled the card part! I'll call that number today. This is my first time filing so there's no old card. Fingers crossed it shows up soon.

yeah BofA EDD card line is way easier to get through than calling EDD directly lol. they actually answer

This is correct - the prepaid debit card for California EDD benefits is managed through Bank of America. One thing to add: you can also create an account at bankofamerica.com/eddcard to check your card balance and transaction history once it arrives. If your card hasn't arrived after 10 business days, you can request a replacement through that same Bank of America line.

wait are you sure your payment was actually released?? sometimes UI Online shows approved but the payment is still pending or there's an issue they haven't told you about. i had this happen where it said approved but there was a hold on the payment i didn't know about for like 2 weeks

AuthorIt says 'payment issued' in my UI Online account history. Does that definitely mean the money went to the card or could it still be held up somewhere?

Payment' issued in UI Online means EDD has sent the payment to Bank of America. From that point Bank of America processes it, which usually takes 1-2 business days to actually load onto the card. So yes, if it says issued, the money should be on its way to thecard.

THIS IS WHAT CONFUSED ME TOO. the statuses in UI Online are so unclear like what does issued vs processed vs released even mean lol EDD really needs to fix their website

I was in this exact situation about 2 months ago and was going crazy trying to figure out how to track my unemployment card in the mail. What finally worked for me was using a service called Claimyr to get through to an actual EDD agent. I needed to confirm my payment details and find out whether a new card had been issued or if there was some problem. The agent confirmed my card was in transit and also explained that EDD doesn't have a direct tracking number system for the debit cards - they just know when it was mailed. You can check them out at claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - honestly saved me so much time versus sitting on hold for hours.

AuthorOh interesting, I didn't know there was a service like that. Did it actually get you through to a real person at EDD? Every time I call I just get the automated system and then it hangs up on me.

Yes, a real live EDD agent. I was honestly shocked because I had been trying for days on my own. The agent was able to pull up my specific payment record and confirm the card had been mailed. Definitely worth checking out if you keep getting stuck in the automated system.

few things that might help while you wait: 1. Check your UI Online account under 'Payment Activity' - it'll show the exact date payment was issued 2. Count BUSINESS days not calendar days - weekends don't count toward the 7-10 day estimate 3. Make sure your mailing address in your EDD account is correct - sounds obvious but a lot of people have old addresses still on file 4. If you moved recently and didn't update your address with EDD before the payment was issued, the card might be going to your old address Hope it shows up soon!

AuthorI just double checked and my address is correct thankfully. And counting just business days I'm only at day 4 so maybe I need to chill out a little haha

the address thing is HUGE. my card went to my parents house because i forgot to update my address when i moved. had to get a whole replacement issued which added another 10 days. update your address people!!

also worth noting - mail in general has been slower lately in a lot of areas so even 10 business days isn't a guarantee

Honestly EDD's whole debit card system is so outdated and frustrating. Why can't they just do direct deposit as the default?? The fact that you have to wait 1-2 WEEKS for a physical card to arrive in the mail in 2025 is ridiculous. I remember waiting for my card and it took 12 business days and then the card arrived but didn't activate properly and I had to call Bank of America three separate times to sort it out. The EDD system is designed to make everything as difficult as possible I swear.

You can actually set up direct deposit through UI Online! Go to your profile settings and look for 'Payment Options' - you can link your bank account there. It's not the default but it is available. Might be worth setting up for future payments once you get sorted with this first card situation.

AuthorWait WHAT. I had no idea direct deposit was even an option. Setting that up immediately once I can log in on my computer. Would have saved all this stress.

NebulaNomad
ok fair point I did not know that either and I've filed like 3 times lol. EDD really buries that option

yeah I switched to direct deposit after my first claim and never looked back. deposits show up like 1-2 days after EDD releases payment. so much better than waiting for the card

is there actually a tracking number?? like can you track it on USPS website or something
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
Unfortunately no - the EDD debit cards are mailed without individual tracking numbers. They go out as standard first class mail. This is one of the frustrating things about the system. Your only option for status is calling Bank of America's EDD card services line to confirm when it was mailed.
0 coins
Javier Garcia
that seems like a design flaw tbh why would you mail something with no tracking when it has a persons money on it
0 coins
Oliver Fischer
Totally agree it's a design flaw. The card itself doesn't have money loaded until you activate it though, so theoretically intercepting it is less valuable - but still, tracking would be nice for peace of mind

I had a situation where my card never arrived at all - it just got lost in the mail. Happened to me on my second claim. After 14 business days I called Bank of America and they confirmed it had been mailed but never activated, so they issued a replacement. The replacement took another 7-10 days. It was a nightmare honestly especially because I had bills due. Would definitely recommend calling BofA sooner rather than later if you're approaching that 10 business day mark.

Miguel Diaz
AuthorThat sounds awful, I'm sorry you went through that. Good to know I should start following up at 10 days if it still hasn't arrived.

Emma Taylor
Yeah it was stressful. One thing I'll add - when you call Bank of America to report a card not received, make sure you explicitly say you want to request a replacement card, not just report it missing. The first time I called the rep just noted it on the account but didn't actually trigger the replacement process.

this is good advice. being specific about what you're asking for when dealing with any of these systems (EDD or BofA) makes a huge difference

Random but this thread reminded me of when I first got approved for unemployment and had no idea how anything worked. I was checking my mail obsessively for days and then when the card finally came it looked like junk mail - just a plain white envelope from 'Payment Services' or something with no EDD branding on the outside. I almost threw it away! So OP make sure you open everything that comes in the mail even if it looks like spam lol
0 coins
Miguel Diaz
AuthorOh my gosh thank you for this warning!! I would 100% have thrown that away without opening it. I'll be opening everything from now on.

Connor Byrne
YES the envelope is super nondescript. I think it's intentionally low key so people don't steal mail that obviously has a debit card inside but it definitely causes people to miss it

Oliver Fischer
This is such an important point. The return address won't say EDD or even Bank of America clearly. Just open all your mail until it shows up!

How long ago did your payment show as issued? The timeline matters a lot here. Also are you in a rural area? Mail delivery times vary a ton depending on where you are in California.
0 coins
Miguel Diaz
AuthorPayment showed as issued 6 days ago (4 business days). I'm in the Bay Area so not rural. Sounds like I'm still within normal range?
0 coins
Isabella Silva
Yeah 4 business days is totally fine, you're well within the normal window. I'd give it until next Wednesday or Thursday before getting worried. Bay Area mail is usually pretty reliable.

Zainab Ahmed
Agreed, 4 business days is early still. The 7-10 business day estimate is pretty accurate in my experience. Try to relax if you can and give it until day 8-9 before escalating.

Just want to add some info about what to do WHEN it arrives since nobody mentioned this: - The card needs to be activated before you can use it - Call the activation number on the sticker on the front of the card - You'll set up a PIN during activation - After activation you can use it anywhere Visa debit is accepted OR withdraw cash at ATMs (note: some ATM fees apply unless you use Bank of America or Allpoint network ATMs) - Keep the card even after your benefits end - if you file another claim within 3 years, EDD will reload that same card Hope it shows up soon for you!

Miguel Diaz
AuthorThis is super helpful, thank you! I'll make sure to activate it right away. Good to know about keeping it too.

Also worth adding - when you set your PIN don't use obvious numbers and treat it like any other debit card. There's unfortunately fraud targeting EDD cards so be careful with your account info

Ravi Choudhury
Great point about fraud. Also - never share your card number or PIN with anyone claiming to be from EDD or Bank of America who contacts you first. Legitimate EDD and BofA will never ask for that information proactively.

did anyone else have trouble activating their card once it arrived? mine kept saying the info didn't match when i tried to activate and i had to call bank of america like 4 times to get it sorted. just want to warn OP in case they run into that
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
Activation issues usually happen when the name or address you enter doesn't exactly match what EDD has on file. Even small differences like 'St' vs 'Street' or a middle initial can cause problems. Make sure everything you enter matches your EDD account exactly.
0 coins
CosmosCaptain
that was exactly my problem actually - i had abbreviated my street address and it didn't match. such a small thing but caused so much hassle

Good tip. Also if you still can't activate after multiple attempts, request to be transferred to a live BofA agent rather than going through the automated activation system - they can manually verify your identity and complete the activation.

I'm gonna be that person and suggest setting up direct deposit RIGHT NOW even before your card arrives. Log into UI Online, go to payment preferences, and add your bank account. Your NEXT payment will go directly to your bank instead of to the card. It won't help with this first payment but it makes every future payment so much easier and faster. I switched to direct deposit and payments show up within 24-48 hours of being issued, no waiting for mail.

Miguel Diaz
AuthorAlready planning to do this after seeing the comments above! Just waiting until I'm near a computer to set it up properly. Thank you!

Smart! One note - make sure you have your bank routing number and account number ready. The UI Online system will ask for both and it's easy to confuse them. Routing number is the 9-digit number on the bottom left of a check, account number is the longer one next to it.

Direct deposit is genuinely 10x better than the card system for people who already have a bank account. Only reason to use the card is if you're unbanked.

Not sure if this helps but I went through something similar a few months back and ended up using Claimyr to actually get a California EDD agent on the phone. I needed to confirm my payment had been properly issued because I was getting conflicting info online. The agent confirmed everything was fine and my card was on the way. Claimyr basically navigates the EDD phone system for you and calls you back when an agent is available - way better than sitting on hold for hours. claimyr.com if you want to check it out. They also have a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 showing exactly how it works.

I saw someone else mention this earlier in the thread. Is it actually legit? Seems almost too good to be true that there's a service that can get you through to EDD
0 coins
Freya Johansen
Yeah totally legit, I was skeptical too at first. EDD phone lines are notoriously hard to get through - Claimyr basically handles the waiting part for you and connects you when an agent picks up. For something like confirming a card was mailed it was exactly what I needed.

one more thing nobody mentioned - if you have Informed Delivery through USPS (the free service where they email you pictures of your mail each day) you can sometimes spot the card envelope before it arrives. it won't give you a tracking number but you'll see an image of the envelope the day before it's delivered. free to sign up at usps.com if you don't have it already

Miguel Diaz
AuthorOh this is GENIUS. I actually already have Informed Delivery set up, I just completely forgot about it. Going to check it right now!

nice! the images are grayscale and sometimes blurry but you can usually make out envelope shapes and return addresses. good luck!

Informed Delivery is such a good tip for this specific situation. It won't tell you when the card was mailed but it gives you a heads up the day before delivery which is better than nothing.

Comprehensive summary of everything in this thread for anyone finding it later: **How to track your EDD unemployment card in the mail:** - There is NO direct mail tracking for EDD debit cards - Call Bank of America EDD card services (1-866-692-9374) to confirm mailing date - Allow 7-10 BUSINESS days from payment issued date - Envelope looks like plain junk mail - open everything - Use USPS Informed Delivery to get a preview the day before - If no card after 10 business days, request replacement from BofA **Better long-term solution:** - Set up direct deposit through UI Online to avoid this issue for future payments **If you need to reach EDD directly:** - Try Claimyr (claimyr.com) if you can't get through on the regular phone lines
