Why have I not received my unemployment debit card from California EDD?
I certified for my first two weeks of unemployment about 10 days ago and my claim shows as approved in UI Online, but I still haven't gotten my debit card in the mail. The payment history shows that EDD processed the payment already. I've never been on unemployment before so I don't totally know what to expect, but I figured the card would have shown up by now. Do they mail it separately from the payments? Is there some kind of activation I have to do that I haven't done yet? My address in my EDD account looks correct. I'm starting to stress because I really need this money and I have no idea if the card is lost in the mail or just delayed or what. Has anyone dealt with this? How long did it actually take you to get your Bank of America EDD debit card?

The EDD debit card is issued through Bank of America and it typically takes 7 to 10 business days from when your first payment is processed to receive it in the mail. The card comes in a plain white envelope which a lot of people accidentally throw away thinking it's junk mail, so keep an eye out for that. Since your payment already shows as processed, you're probably just a couple days away. If it's been more than 14 business days though, you'll want to contact Bank of America directly at the number on their site to request a replacement card.

AuthorOh wow I did not know it comes in a plain envelope, I would have 100% thrown that out. I'll watch the mail more carefully now. How do I know if the payment actually loaded onto the card once I get it?

You can check your card balance at bankofamerica.com/eddcard or call the automated line on the back of the card. There's also an app you can download. Once you activate the card your funds should already be there if the payment posted.

same thing happened to me my first time filing, I tossed the envelope and had to wait for a replacement which took forever

Just to add some detail here - when EDD says your payment is processed, that just means EDD released the funds to Bank of America. There can still be a 1-3 day lag before BofA actually loads it to your card account. And if this is your very first payment, the card itself has to be mailed out first before anything else can happen. The whole timeline from payment release to card in hand can realistically be 2 weeks for first-time recipients.

AuthorThat makes sense actually. So the card and the payment kind of travel separately and meet up when I activate it?

Leslie Parker
Basically yes. EDD sends the payment electronically to Bank of America, and BofA mails the physical card. Once you activate the card, all payments that have been released by EDD up to that point will be accessible. So if you've had two weeks of payments processed, both should be there when you activate.

this is correct, I had like 3 weeks of payments sitting there when I finally got my card activated lol

If you're worried about your card being lost or delayed, I'd suggest trying to reach EDD directly to confirm what address they sent the card to and whether Bank of America has been notified. The problem is actually getting through to EDD on the phone is basically impossible, I tried for two weeks straight and never got a live person. What actually worked for me was using a service called Claimyr. You go to claimyr.com and it basically holds your place in EDD's phone queue and calls you back when an agent is available. I was skeptical but I got a call back from an actual EDD rep within a few hours. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see it before trying. For something like confirming a mailing address, talking to a real agent is really the only way to get a definitive answer.

AuthorI actually tried calling EDD twice yesterday and couldn't get through at all. I'll check out that Claimyr thing because I really do want to confirm my address is right on their end.

I used Claimyr last month when my claim went into adjudication and I couldn't get any info online. Definitely worked, got through to someone who actually looked at my account and explained what was happening.

does claimyr work for bank of america questions too or just EDD

For the Bank of America side of things, BofA actually has a separate customer service line specifically for EDD cardholders. You don't need to go through EDD at all if your question is purely about the card itself. Call 1-866-692-9374 and select the option for new cardholders or card not received. They can tell you whether a card has been issued and what address it was sent to. Usually faster than trying to reach EDD.

AuthorOh this is really helpful, I didn't realize I could call Bank of America directly about this. Does the address they have come from EDD or do I update it with BofA?
0 coins
Alice Pierce
The address BofA uses comes directly from your EDD account, so if the address is wrong in UI Online, that's what needs to be corrected. You'd have to update it in your EDD account and then possibly request a new card be mailed to the correct address.

confirmed this, called BofA EDD line and they told me exactly where my card was sent within 2 minutes, way easier than dealing with EDD directly

Can I ask a dumb question - do you have to sign up for the debit card or does EDD automatically set that up? I'm about to file for the first time and I want to make sure I don't miss a step
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
It's automatic, you don't sign up for it separately. When your claim is approved and your first payment is processed, EDD/Bank of America automatically mails the card to the address on your EDD account. You don't have to opt in.

Ivanna St. Pierre
ok thank god, I was worried I missed something in the application

The only thing you have to do is activate the card once it arrives, which you do by calling the number on the sticker on the front of the card. That part is not automatic.

BEEN THROUGH THIS EXACT SITUATION and let me tell you it is SO stressful when you're waiting for money you need and nothing shows up. The EDD system gives you zero visibility into the card mailing process, like I could see my payment was released but there was NO way to track the card in the mail or see if it was even sent. Absolutely ridiculous that they can't give you a tracking number or SOMETHING. I waited 16 days before my card showed up and I was convinced the whole time it was lost.

Sara Unger
AuthorThis is exactly how I feel!! The not knowing is the worst part. 16 days is a long time, did you end up calling anyone or did you just wait it out?

Elin Robinson
I tried calling EDD like 8 times and could never get through. Eventually called the BofA EDD line and they confirmed the card had been mailed and gave me an approximate delivery window. Card showed up 2 days after that call. I wish I had called BofA first instead of wasting days trying EDD.

the lack of tracking is genuinely absurd for something this important

Just want to make sure you know - the EDD debit card only comes for people who chose the debit card payment option. If you chose paper check during your application you'd be waiting for a check in the mail instead. Is it possible you accidentally selected check and you're looking for the wrong thing?
0 coins
Sara Unger
AuthorI actually don't remember selecting anything during the application, is debit card the default?
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
Yes, debit card is the default payment method. If you didn't change anything during application, you're getting a debit card. You can verify which method you selected in UI Online under payment options.

Beth Ford
Thanks for clarifying that, I wasn't 100% sure which was default

quick tip - when your card does arrive make sure you activate it within a few days. I think there might be some kind of timeframe on that but not totally sure. also don't toss the welcome packet that comes with it, has important info about fees and stuff
0 coins
Leslie Parker
There isn't a hard expiration on activating the card from when it arrives as far as I know, but the card itself does have an expiration date. And yes the fee schedule in the packet is worth reading because there are ATM fees for some transactions.

Sergio Neal
oh good, I panicked when I didn't activate mine right away

There ARE fees if you use certain ATMs, but you can use any Bank of America ATM fee free. Also some Allpoint network ATMs are free, it's in the paperwork

Circling back because I want to mention - if you call the BofA line and they say the card was sent but you never receive it within their estimated window, at that point you DO need to contact EDD to get a replacement issued. And that's where it gets complicated because EDD involvement means trying to reach an actual agent. If you end up in that situation, the Claimyr service I mentioned earlier (claimyr.com) is genuinely the fastest way to get through. The phone queue issue with EDD is not a myth, it's basically impossible without some kind of workaround.

Sara Unger
AuthorGood to know the escalation path. Hopefully it doesn't come to that but I'm bookmarking claimyr.com just in case.

I needed a replacement card and EDD was involved and it took almost 3 weeks of trying to get through before I talked to someone. Definitely look into tools that help you get through the queue, it makes a huge difference

I work in HR and we process a lot of employee separations and one thing I see come up repeatedly is people using old addresses that haven't been updated in EDD's system. Especially if you moved recently or if your address in UI Online is an old one from a previous claim. Worth double-checking that the address in your EDD account is your current address and not something from years ago.

Sara Unger
AuthorI did move about 8 months ago and I'm pretty sure I updated it but now I'm second-guessing myself. How do I check what address EDD currently has on file?
0 coins
Atticus Domingo
Log into UI Online and go to your profile or account settings. Your mailing address should be listed there. If it's wrong, update it immediately and then contact Bank of America to confirm what address they received from EDD before your card was mailed.

This is really important advice. Address mismatches are one of the most common reasons cards go missing. Always verify before assuming the card is just delayed.

something no one mentioned - if your card does get lost in the mail and you request a replacement, EDD and BofA can put a freeze on the original card so nobody can use it if they find it. Just something to be aware of if it comes to that

Sara Unger
AuthorThat's reassuring to know, thanks. I hadn't even thought about the security side of this.

yeah it's basically like losing a regular debit card, same protections apply. Though I'd feel better knowing where it is lol

how long does it take to get a replacement card if the original never arrives?? asking for myself unfortunately
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
A replacement card typically takes 7-10 business days from when it's requested. You'd request it through Bank of America first, but if EDD needs to be involved (like if there's a payment issue not just a card issue) you'll need to contact them too.
0 coins
Amy Fleming
ugh so another 2 weeks basically. what a nightmare

When I got my replacement it actually came in about 5 business days, so maybe they expedite them? Or maybe I got lucky
0 coins
Alice Pierce
If you're in financial hardship because of the delay, you can request an expedited card from Bank of America. There may be a fee for that but it comes faster. Ask them about that option specifically.

I had my card go to the wrong address because EDD had an old apartment number on file. Called EDD to correct it and they updated the address, then I had to call BofA to request a new card to the corrected address. The whole thing took about 3 weeks from start to finish. Would have gone faster if I'd caught the address issue before the first card was mailed. Always always check your address first.

Sara Unger
AuthorThree weeks sounds awful, I'm sorry you went through that. How did you finally get through to EDD to fix the address?
0 coins
Juan Moreno
Honestly I used Claimyr to get through to EDD. I had been trying on my own for over a week with zero success, called 7am and 4pm and every other trick I'd read about. Claimyr got me connected to an agent in a few hours. The video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows how it works if you want to look into it.

Address issues are seriously underrated as a source of problems with EDD payments. People don't think to check because they assume it's all automatic.

does anyone know if there's a way to switch to direct deposit instead of the debit card? I hate having a separate card to keep track of
0 coins
Leslie Parker
Yes! You can switch to direct deposit through UI Online. Go to payment options in your account settings and you can add your bank account information for direct deposit. It takes effect for future payments, not retroactively, but it's definitely possible.

Freya Ross
oh nice I'm switching immediately, the debit card is so inconvenient

direct deposit is way better imo, payments usually hit my bank account within 24-48 hours of EDD processing them

update for anyone searching this later: I had the same issue and my card showed up on day 12 business days after my payment was processed. Came in a plain white envelope from Bank of America with no logo or obvious markings on the outside. Would have 100% trashed it if I didn't know to look for it. Activated fine and all my payments were there. So if you're within 2 weeks, just keep watching the mail.

anybody know what happens to your payments if your card expires while your claim is still active? I've been on unemployment for about 6 months and I think my card might be expiring soon
0 coins
Alice Pierce
Bank of America automatically sends a replacement card before your current one expires, similar to how regular bank cards work. You should get the new card in the mail a few weeks before expiration. Your balance and new payments transfer automatically to the new card.

ok good, I was worried I'd have to call someone to get it renewed

genuine question - if someone else found your EDD card in the mail before you did and activated it, would you even know? is there fraud protection?
0 coins
Butch Sledgehammer
Yes, you can register your card at bankofamerica.com/eddcard and set up transaction alerts. If your card was activated or used without your knowledge you'd get an alert. If fraud occurs you can dispute the transactions. This is why it's a good idea to register your card and set alerts immediately after activating.

Sergio Neal
ok I'm going to set up alerts right now, never thought about that risk before

I've been dealing with a similar situation but mine is different - my UI Online shows payment as pending not processed and I haven't gotten a card either. Is pending the same as processed or should I be worried about that?
0 coins
Leslie Parker
Pending and processed are different statuses. Pending means EDD hasn't fully released the payment yet, which could mean your claim is still being reviewed or there's a certification issue. The card won't be mailed until at least the first payment is fully processed. You might want to check if there are any notices or action items in your UI Online account.
0 coins
Isaiah Cross
oh no there's a notice in my account that says I need to provide additional information. I didn't even see that. I need to look at this more carefully
0 coins
Atticus Domingo
Yeah definitely look at that notice right away. Pending status with an unresolved notice could mean your claim is in adjudication or needs additional verification. That would explain why you haven't received payment or a card yet.

FINAL UPDATE: I wanted to post an update for anyone who finds this thread later. I checked my address in UI Online and it was correct. I called the Bank of America EDD line at 1-866-692-9374 and they confirmed a card had been mailed to my address. It showed up the very next day in a plain white envelope like everyone warned me about. I activated it on the phone and both weeks of payments were already loaded. Total time from payment processing to card in hand was about 13 business days. Thanks everyone for the help, this community is great.
