How long does it take to get your California EDD unemployment card in the mail?
I got approved for unemployment last week and my claim finally moved out of adjudication. The approval letter says my benefits are ready but I still haven't received my EDD debit card yet. I've been checking my mailbox every single day and nothing. How long does it take to get your unemployment card from California EDD? My first payment was apparently processed 6 days ago according to UI Online but the card hasn't arrived. I'm starting to stress because rent is due soon and I have no idea if it got lost or if this is normal. Did anyone else wait this long or should I be calling EDD to report a missing card?

Author10 days from when exactly? From when they processed the first payment or from when I got the approval letter?

The EDD debit card is issued by Bank of America and they mail it separately from EDD communications. Once your first benefit payment is released by California EDD, Bank of America typically mails the card within 2-3 business days. Then standard USPS delivery adds another 5-7 business days on top of that. So realistically you're looking at about 7-10 business days total from when that first payment hits. If you haven't received it after 14 calendar days from your payment release date, that's when you'd want to contact Bank of America directly at the number on the EDD website, not EDD themselves, because the card is a Bank of America product.

AuthorOh I didn't realize it was Bank of America that handles the card! That's really helpful. So I should be contacting them rather than EDD if it goes missing?

Exactly. Bank of America has a dedicated EDD cardholder line. They can tell you if the card was mailed, when it was sent, and issue a replacement if needed. EDD themselves can't track the physical card in the mail.

this is correct, i went through this exact thing and wasted 2 hours trying to call EDD about my card before someone told me to call Bank of America instead lol

I just went through this whole process about a month ago. Waited 9 days for my card after my first payment was released. The waiting is brutal especially when you need the money NOW. One thing I'll mention - while you're waiting on the card situation, if you have any other issues with your claim you need to actually talk to someone at California EDD about, getting through on the phone is basically impossible on your own. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an EDD rep when I had a separate adjudication question. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - saved me from sitting on hold for 4+ hours. Just mentioning it in case you run into phone issues while sorting all this out.

AuthorUgh the phone thing is so real. I tried calling yesterday and got the 'we cannot take your call' message twice. What kind of question did Claimyr help you with?

I had an adjudication hold on a specific week that wasn't clearing even after approval. The rep I got through Claimyr was actually able to manually release it while I was on the phone. Worth it for that alone.

never heard of claimyr but the EDD phone system is genuinely terrible so im not surprised people are finding workarounds

wait so does the card come in a plain envelope or does it say Bank of America on it?? i almost threw mine away because it looked like junk mail lol. just a heads up to everyone waiting - OPEN EVERYTHING that comes in the mail from Sacramento area zip codes or anything that looks like it could be financial

yeah mine had like a plain white envelope with a return address i didn't recognize at first. the card itself was inside a folded paper thing not even a real envelope inside

same here, almost trashed it. the envelope is super plain and nondescript which i guess is a security thing

To add some more specific detail here - the Bank of America EDD debit card should arrive in a plain white envelope with no Bank of America branding on the outside, which is intentional for security purposes. The return address will typically reference Prepaid Card Services or something similar. You activate it by calling the number on the sticker on the front of the card. Important: your first payment and possibly your second payment may be loaded onto the card before you even receive it physically, so once you activate it the money should already be there assuming EDD processed your payments.

Morgan Washington
AuthorThis is super reassuring. So the payments stack up on the card while it's in transit?
0 coins
Oliver Alexander
Yes, exactly. The card account exists even before the physical card arrives. Once you activate it you'll see your available balance which could include multiple weeks of payments if you've been certifying during the wait period.

this happened to me and I panicked thinking my payments were lost but they were all just sitting on the card ready to go once I activated. had like 3 weeks of benefits loaded on there

I remember freaking out about this same thing when I first filed. My timeline was: approved on a Tuesday, first payment released Thursday, card arrived the following Wednesday. So about 6 business days from payment release to card in hand. But I've seen people in this sub say it took them 2 full weeks so it really varies by location and USPS. If you're in a rural area or a region with mail delays it could take longer.

AuthorI'm in the Bay Area so hopefully USPS is decent here. 6 business days would put me at getting it tomorrow or Thursday fingers crossed

Lara Woods
Bay Area should be fine, the cards ship from a processing center so it depends more on USPS routing than anything EDD-specific

BEEN WAITING 18 DAYS. 18 DAYS and no card. Called Bank of America three times, first rep said it was mailed, second rep couldn't find my account, third rep said there was a 'processing delay' with zero explanation. California EDD's system is absolutely broken. Nobody should have to jump through this many hoops just to access money they're legally entitled to. I finally had to request an expedited replacement and even THAT took another 5 days. This system is designed to make people give up.

Author18 days is insane, I'm so sorry. Did the replacement card finally come through?

yes it came but by then i was already borrowing money from family which shouldn't have been necessary. the whole thing was a nightmare

This is why I always tell people to document every call with date, time, and rep ID number. When you have that paper trail it's easier to escalate when things go sideways like this.

quick question for the thread - if your address changed after you filed your initial claim, does the card go to the old address or the new one? asking because i moved recently and updated my UI Online profile but idk if that carries over to Bank of America
0 coins
Oliver Alexander
Great question and important one. The card is mailed to the address California EDD has on file at the time of issuance, but your UI Online address and your Bank of America card address are technically separate. You'd want to update your address with Bank of America directly through their cardholder website or phone line to make sure any replacement cards or statements go to the right place.

Eli Butler
oh wow I had no idea they were separate systems. updating with BofA right now, thanks for the heads up

Ian Armstrong
this tripped me up too, i updated my address on UI Online and assumed it was handled everywhere. nope, had to do it separately

the card takes forever, the phone lines are impossible, the website crashes constantly... i've been on unemployment twice now and both times it was the same story. at least the second time i knew what to expect. OP just be patient and keep certifying your weekly claims on time, don't let the card stress make you forget about the weekly certification requirements or you'll have a bigger problem
0 coins
Morgan Washington
Authoroh shoot I almost forgot about weekly certification with everything going on. Thanks for the reminder

Molly Chambers
yeah people forget and then they have to call EDD to get missed weeks processed which is a whole other headache. keep certifying every week like clockwork

Wanted to update my earlier comment - if anyone ends up in a situation where they need to actually reach a California EDD agent (not Bank of America) for something related to their claim like pending issues or benefit year questions, I want to reiterate that Claimyr really does work. I was skeptical at first but after spending days trying to get through on my own I tried it and had a real EDD rep on the line within a reasonable wait. Website is claimyr.com and there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 that explains the whole thing. Not saying you need it for the card issue specifically since that's Bank of America territory, but just for general EDD contact problems.

is it like a callback service or do they actually get you on hold with EDD?

Adrian Hughes
from what I understand they work through the phone system to get you connected to an actual rep. the details are on their site but the end result is you actually talk to someone which at this point feels like a miracle

Marcus Patterson
genuinely might try this, i've been trying to reach EDD for a week about a different issue and getting nowhere

For anyone who ends up needing a card replacement, here's the process: Call the Bank of America EDD cardholder number which you can find at edd.ca.gov. Verify your identity. Request a replacement card. Standard replacement takes about 7-10 business days. If you have genuine financial hardship you can request expedited delivery which is supposed to be faster but in my experience it's hit or miss. You cannot get the funds transferred to a personal bank account until you first activate a physical card, so getting the card situation resolved is priority one.

AuthorCan I ask - once I have the card can I transfer the balance to my regular bank account? I'd rather have it in my checking
0 coins
Lara Woods
Yes! Once you activate and access your Bank of America EDD account online you can set up a transfer to your personal bank account. There's no fee for this I believe but double check. A lot of people do this instead of using the debit card directly
0 coins
Oliver Alexander
Correct, you can link a personal bank account and transfer your EDD balance there. This is actually what I recommend long-term so your money is in your regular account with whatever bank protections you already have

Ian Armstrong
one thing nobody mentioned - if you set up direct deposit BEFORE your first payment was issued, you won't even get a card. like if you had your bank info in UI Online when you filed, the money goes straight there and Bank of America never sends a card at all. did OP set up direct deposit or are they on the debit card by default?
0 coins
Morgan Washington
AuthorI don't think I set up direct deposit... I didn't see that option when I was filing. Is it too late to switch?
0 coins
Ian Armstrong
you can add direct deposit in UI Online under payment preferences or something like that. but if you're already getting the card you might just want to stick with it and do the bank transfer method the other person mentioned
0 coins
Oliver Alexander
To clarify: new claimants are automatically set up for the Bank of America debit card unless they proactively choose direct deposit. You can switch to direct deposit at any time through UI Online but it typically doesn't take effect until the next payment cycle, not retroactively

went through this exact thing 3 months ago. my card took 11 days. I nearly had a panic attack every day it didn't show up. what helped me was checking my Bank of America EDD account ONLINE even before the card arrived - you can create an account at bankofamerica.com/eddcard and see your balance and transaction history without the physical card. that helped me confirm my payments were actually there waiting for me
0 coins
Morgan Washington
AuthorWait you can check the balance online without the card?? This is huge, doing this right now
0 coins
Marcus Patterson
yes!! you just need your social security number and some other verification info to set up the online account. seeing that balance there helped me stop panicking about whether the payments were lost

i wish someone had told me this when i first got on unemployment, i spent a week assuming my payments were just gone into the void

also want to warn people - if you report your card lost or stolen by mistake (like you panic and call too early thinking it was lost but then it arrives) they'll CANCEL the card in transit and you have to wait for a replacement. don't do what I did lol. wait the full 14 days before calling to report it missing
0 coins
Morgan Washington
Authoroh no I almost called this morning to report it. So glad I posted here first

Lydia Bailey
seriously wait it out. the replacement process takes just as long as the original wait which is infuriating but that's how it works

AuthorUPDATE: Card arrived today!! Day 8 from when my first payment was processed. It was exactly as described - plain white envelope, no branding. Already activated it and my full balance was there waiting. Thank you everyone for keeping me from panicking and calling too early

Great outcome! For anyone reading this thread later: 7-10 business days is the normal expected window, check your balance online at bankofamerica.com/eddcard while you wait, and only call Bank of America (not EDD) if you've hit the 14-day mark with nothing

congrats OP glad it worked out. the EDD process is stressful but once you get through the initial setup it gets easier

AuthorTotally agree. The uncertainty at the beginning was the worst part. Now that the card is here and I know how weekly certifications work I feel way more in control of the process

just wait till you get your first letter saying there's a 'potential issue' with your claim and you need to call them lol. that's when the REAL fun begins

Since this thread has been super helpful for a lot of people I'll leave one final note - if anyone runs into issues down the road where they need to actually reach California EDD by phone (adjudication questions, certification problems, anything requiring a live rep), don't waste days redialing. Claimyr at claimyr.com handles the phone queue navigation and actually gets you connected to EDD. Video walkthrough at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains it well. The EDD phone system is not going to get better on its own so having tools like this in your back pocket is genuinely useful.

solid recommendation, the EDD phone situation has been bad for years and shows no signs of improving. any tool that helps people actually get through is worth knowing about
