EDD Bank of America card came in mail - No funds loaded yet. Am I approved?

Just received my Bank of America EDD debit card in the mail yesterday. I filed my claim about 3 weeks ago and had my phone interview last week, but my UI Online account still says 'pending' for my payments. The card came in one of those plain-looking envelopes that I almost threw away, but there's zero money on it when I checked the balance online. Does getting the card mean my claim is approved? Or do they just automatically send these out? How long after receiving the card until they actually load money onto it? The EDD website isn't clear about this timeline and I'm getting worried since rent is due next week. Thanks for any help!

Getting the card doesn't necessarily mean your claim is approved. EDD often sends out the B of A cards while your claim is still processing. The card is just the payment method they use - they'll load it with funds once your payments are actually approved. Keep checking your UI Online account for when your status changes from 'pending' to 'paid'. Once it shows 'paid' on the website, funds are usually loaded to the card within 24-48 hours.

Thanks for clarifying! That makes sense. Do you know if there's a way to set up notifications so I don't have to keep checking the website constantly?

That's good to know! At least I'm not the only one who's confused by this process.

They mail the cards automatically when you first file a claim, regardless of approval status. I've helped many people through this process and there's usually a 1-3 week gap between receiving the card and having funds deposited after approval. The key indicators to watch for are: 1. Your UI Online status changing from 'pending' to 'paid' 2. An email/text notification if you set up alerts 3. A payment transaction appearing in your payment history If you had your eligibility interview last week and it went well, you should see movement on your claim within the next 7-10 days. The first payment typically includes multiple weeks if you've been certifying regularly since filing.

This is super helpful! I did set up text notifications, so hopefully I'll get something soon. The interview seemed to go well, but the interviewer didn't give me a clear answer at the end.

A month?! That's so long to wait. Did you have to do anything special to finally get it approved?

My situation was exactly like yours about two months ago. I received the BoA card but couldn't get through to EDD to check my claim status. After days of calling and getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message, I found Claimyr.com and it literally saved me weeks of frustration. They connected me to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes who confirmed my claim was approved but stuck in pending due to a system flag. Got my first payment 2 days later. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km

Thanks for the tip! I've been trying to call but can't get through either. I'll check out that service if I don't see any updates by next week.

You really shouldn't worry too much about this - it's totally normal!! The EDD system is RIDICULOUS with how they handle these things. They send out cards before approving claims and don't explain ANYTHING properly!!! I got my card 3 weeks before any money was on it, and my husband got his card but was ultimately denied benefits (different situation though, he was fired for cause). The card means NOTHING except they processed your initial application and set up your payment method. Your claim could still be denied or approved at this point.

Quick update on your original question - you mentioned you had your phone interview last week. That's actually a good sign since they typically only schedule those when your claim is close to being processed. If the interview went well and there were no issues with your employment separation, you should see movement soon. Just make sure you continue certifying for benefits every two weeks even if you're still pending.

That's reassuring! Yes, I've been certifying every two weeks like clockwork. Just submitted another certification yesterday actually.

when i got my card i called the BoA EDD number on the back and activated it right away then i could at least check the balance with the app so id know when money finally showed up instead of having to log into UI Online all the time

That's smart! I did activate it and download the app. No money yet but at least I'll get notified this way too.

One last thing to remember - once your payments do start coming through, you can set up direct deposit through the BoA EDD card website to have the funds automatically transfer to your regular bank account. Many people don't realize this option exists and just use the card for everything, but direct deposit is usually faster and more convenient.

Oh that's great to know! I would definitely prefer having it go to my regular bank account. Thanks for all your help!
