California EDD error X57 on unemployment claim - what does this mean?

Been trying to certify for my weekly benefits through UI Online for the past two days and keep hitting a wall. Every time I get to the final submission page, I get this error code X57 and the whole thing just freezes up. No explanation, no pop-up telling me what went wrong, nothing. The page just sits there with that error code staring back at me. Some background: I've been on unemployment for about 6 weeks now, no issues with my claim status as far as I can tell. My account shows eligible and I've been doing my job search activities, logging everything in CalJOBS like I'm supposed to. This error literally came out of nowhere. I tried switching browsers (Chrome to Firefox), cleared my cache and cookies twice, even tried on my phone. Same X57 error every single time. I haven't been able to submit my weekly certification at all this week and I'm freaking out because the deadline is coming up and I don't want my claim to get flagged or payments delayed. Anybody dealt with California EDD error X57 before? Is this a system glitch on their end or is something wrong with my account specifically? Do I need to call them to fix this or is there a way to resolve it myself?

ugh yes I got this same error last month. its a system side thing not your account. usually clears up within 24-48 hours just try again tomorrow

0 coins

I really hope you're right but my deadline for the weekly cert is in like 36 hours so I'm stressed

0 coins

This is partially accurate but not always the case. Error X57 can also be triggered by a data mismatch in your account profile, particularly if your contact information or identity verification details need to be updated. It's not always just a wait-and-see situation.

0 coins

Error X57 on UI Online typically indicates a session authentication conflict. What I've seen work for most people: first, log out completely and close ALL browser windows (not just the tab). Wait about 5 minutes. Then clear your cookies and cache again. When you go back in, don't use any saved passwords - type your credentials manually. If you're still getting the X57 after that, the issue may be tied to your identity verification status with ID.me. Have you verified your identity recently? Sometimes if the ID.me link to your EDD account expires or has a discrepancy, it can cause exactly this kind of submission error during certification.

0 coins

Oh wow I hadn't thought about the ID.me connection. My ID.me verification was done like 4 months ago when I first filed. Could it really expire that fast?

0 coins

ID.me verification itself doesn't expire per se but sometimes the session token connecting ID.me to your EDD account can lapse, especially if you haven't logged in for a while or if you recently changed your email or phone number. Try going to ID.me directly and making sure your account is still active and linked.

0 coins

This happened to me too and it WAS the ID.me thing. Once I re-linked my ID.me account the error went away completely

I went through something similar a few months back and could not get through to California EDD by phone at all to ask about my account issue - kept getting the 'high call volume' message and getting cut off. A coworker suggested I try Claimyr (claimyr.com) which basically holds your place in the EDD phone queue so you get a callback when an agent is free instead of sitting on hold for hours. There's a demo video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. I was skeptical at first but got through to an actual EDD rep within a couple hours. Ended up being worth it just to actually talk to someone who could look at my account directly.

0 coins

I've been trying to call EDD all morning and keep getting disconnected. Might check out that Claimyr thing if I can't get through soon

0 coins

seconded on claimyr. i used it when my account had a weird flag and needed a human to clear it. it worked

0 coins

Is that a free thing or does it cost money? Not trying to spend money when I'm already on unemployment lol

SAME ERROR RIGHT NOW. I have been trying since yesterday morning and nothing is working. I already missed my certification window once before because of a glitch and it took THREE WEEKS to get my back pay sorted out. California EDD's online system is genuinely one of the worst designed things I have ever used in my life. I followed all the browser steps, I cleared everything, I used incognito mode, I even borrowed my roommate's laptop. X57 every single time. I'm at the end of my rope here.

If you're at risk of missing your certification deadline because of this error, you do have an option - you can certify by phone using EDD Tele-Cert at 1-866-333-4606. It's an automated system and doesn't require you to speak with an agent. This is your backup option if UI Online stays broken.

0 coins

Wait there's a phone certification option?? Why does nobody tell you this stuff

0 coins

Yes! Tele-Cert is a lifesaver for exactly these situations. The automated system walks you through the same questions as UI Online. Available 24/7 I believe.

Ok this is huge information. Just saved this number. Thank you

To give everyone a more complete picture on error X57: based on what I've seen discussed across multiple EDD forums, this error code tends to appear in a few different scenarios. First is the browser/session issue already mentioned. Second is when there's a pending issue or flag on your claim that hasn't been fully resolved - even if your main account shows 'eligible,' there can be behind-the-scenes flags that block certification submission. Third is during periods of high system load when EDD's servers get overwhelmed (this often happens right after a holiday weekend or on Mondays). If you've ruled out the browser fix and the ID.me connection, the next step is genuinely to contact EDD directly to have an agent look at whether there's a flag on your account.

0 coins

This is really helpful context. My claim does show eligible so I'm hoping it's just the system load thing since today is a Monday. Going to try again later tonight.

0 coins

Mondays are def the worst day to try anything on UI Online. Way too many people logging on at once

0 coins

I had a hidden flag on my account once that was blocking my certs and I had absolutely no idea it was there. Only found out when I finally got through to an agent. Took like 2 weeks to resolve after that.

0 coins

not sure if this helps but i got a weird error a while back (different code though) and it turned out my browser had auto-filled in my old address from before I moved and it was causing a mismatch. might be worth checking if any of your profile fields got auto-populated with wrong info

0 coins

Oh that's an interesting angle. Let me double check my address and contact info in my EDD profile

0 coins

Good catch. Profile information mismatches are definitely one of the documented causes of submission errors in UI Online. Worth verifying that your name, address, and contact details all exactly match what EDD has on file from your original claim.

0 coins

Just want to share what finally fixed my X57 error when I got it a couple months ago because none of the usual browser fixes worked for me. What ended up working was accessing UI Online through the EDD website directly by typing the address manually into the browser rather than using any bookmark or link. Apparently sometimes a cached redirect can mess with the session initialization. Stupid simple fix but it worked for me.

0 coins

Ok trying this right now. Fingers crossed

0 coins

Update me if this works!! I'll try anything at this point

0 coins

this is a good tip. bookmarks can hold onto old session data sometimes

0 coins

my sister works in tech (not for EDD but still) and she says these kinds of error codes in government systems are often what devs call 'catch-all' errors meaning the system encountered something unexpected but doesn't have a specific error message for it. could literally be anything from a timeout to a database lookup failure. basically the system is broken and they didn't build in proper error messages lol

0 coins

THIS. The fact that they give you an error code but zero explanation is so infuriating. How are people supposed to fix something they can't even diagnose

0 coins

While that's true of some error codes, EDD does have internal documentation on what specific codes mean - the problem is they don't publish this information for claimants. An agent who has access to the backend system notes can actually tell you what triggered the X57 on your specific account.

0 coins

Circling back because I saw some people struggling to reach EDD by phone. The Claimyr service I mentioned earlier (claimyr.com) was genuinely how I got through when I had an account issue blocking my weekly cert. The video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 explains the process pretty clearly. The key thing for the X57 situation is that once you get an agent on the line, they can pull up your account and see exactly what's triggering the error - takes the guesswork out of it completely.

0 coins

I checked it out and it seems legit. Might use it this week if I keep having issues

0 coins

Yep I finally used it after reading about it in another thread and got connected to EDD. Agent saw immediately what was wrong with my account. Would recommend for anyone who keeps hitting errors and can't figure out the cause

0 coins

UPDATE: Ok so I tried a few things based on suggestions here. The Tele-Cert number worked for submitting this week's certification so my benefits shouldn't be delayed, huge relief. Still trying to figure out the underlying X57 issue though so I can use UI Online normally again. The manual URL entry tip didn't fix it for me. Going to try the ID.me relinking next and if that doesn't work I'll probably use Claimyr to get an agent to look at my actual account.

0 coins

SO glad you got the cert in through Tele-Cert. That number is going in my phone contacts permanently

0 coins

Good update! Keep us posted on whether the ID.me relink resolves the X57. I feel like that's the most likely culprit if the session stuff didn't fix it.

0 coins

Smart move using Tele-Cert as the bridge while you troubleshoot the UI Online issue. That's exactly the right approach - don't risk missing your certification window while you work through the technical problem.

0 coins

Can I ask a possibly dumb question - does error X57 only happen during certification or can it pop up at other points in UI Online? I've been getting weird errors when trying to update my availability status and wondering if it's related

0 coins

Not a dumb question at all. The X57 code can appear at different interaction points in UI Online, not just during weekly certification. If you're getting errors updating your availability or other profile sections, it could be the same underlying issue - particularly the authentication/session mismatch or an account flag.

0 coins

Ok that's helpful. My certification is going through fine but the availability update keeps failing. Might be a different issue then if X57 shows on both

0 coins

The availability status error could also be a separate thing - there were some known UI Online issues with updating availability settings a few months back. If it's persisting, that one is probably worth a call to EDD to get the availability field updated manually on their end.

0 coins

FINALLY got through to an EDD agent (used Claimyr, took about 2 hours but it worked). Agent said there was a verification review flag on my account from an identity check that had been sitting there unresolved. That's what was causing my X57 error. She cleared it while I was on the phone and now UI Online is working again. So if anyone else is stuck on X57 and nothing is fixing it, there might be a hidden flag on your account that only an agent can see and clear.

0 coins

This is so useful thank you for updating! Hidden flag theory seems confirmed. Going to escalate to an agent now.

0 coins

The hidden identity verification review flag is a real thing - I've heard about this from multiple people now. EDD apparently runs periodic re-verification checks and if something triggers it, it just silently blocks your account functions without telling you.

0 coins

Glad Claimyr worked for you! And yeah the silent flag issue is something only agents can resolve since there's no way for claimants to see or clear those on their end through UI Online.

0 coins

wow ok so sometimes it really isn't fixable without talking to someone. good to know

0 coins

jumping in late here - for anyone finding this thread via search, the short version of what works for California EDD error X57: 1) try Tele-Cert at 1-866-333-4606 to certify while you troubleshoot 2) clear cache/cookies and manually type in the UI Online URL 3) check your ID.me account linkage 4) if none of that works, call EDD because there might be a hidden flag on your account that needs to be manually cleared by an agent

0 coins

This is the summary I wish existed when I first posted lol. Saving this.

0 coins

helpful summary. should probably be pinned

0 coins

random question but does calling EDD about a technical error like X57 count as one of your job search contacts for the week?? asking for a friend (me

0 coins

No, calling EDD about your own claim does not count as a job search activity. Job search requirements are about contacting potential employers or using approved employment resources. Resolving a UI Online technical issue is a claim management task, not a job search contact.

0 coins

lmao yeah that was a stretch I knew it wasn't gonna count

0 coins

Ha I feel like we've all had that desperate thought when scrambling to meet job search requirements

0 coins

One more thing worth adding for completeness: if you consistently get error X57 specifically on Mondays, there is actually a pattern with EDD's system maintenance windows. EDD performs backend system updates typically on weekend nights and early Monday mornings. Sometimes these maintenance windows run long or create lingering session issues that affect Monday morning users specifically. If this is a recurring pattern for you, try certifying Tuesday through Friday and see if the issue disappears.

0 coins

Interesting - I do tend to wait until Monday to certify since that's when my benefit week ends. Maybe I should start certifying on Saturdays or Sundays instead.

0 coins

Saturday mornings are honestly the best time to use UI Online in my experience. Way less traffic and the system is snappier too.

0 coins

Nobody tells you ANY of this when you first sign up for unemployment. You just get thrown into the deep end and expected to figure it out.

0 coins

OP did you ever get the ID.me relink to work or did you end up going the agent route?

0 coins

Update: I tried the ID.me relinking and it actually did make a difference - I can now access most parts of UI Online without the X57 error. But I'm still getting the error on the final submit step of certification specifically. So I think there might be both a session issue AND a flag on my account. I'm going to call EDD this week (probably use Claimyr based on what others have said) to get the remaining issue cleared.

0 coins

That's a useful data point - partial fix from ID.me relink suggests it was a contributing factor but not the sole cause. The certification-specific block on final submission does sound like it could be that identity review flag. Good luck with the agent call.

0 coins

You're so close to getting this fully resolved, hang in there! The agent call should be the last piece.

0 coins

this thread has been way more helpful than anything on EDD's actual website lol

0 coins

fr EDD's help documentation is like written for robots

0 coins

their FAQ section is genuinely useless for any real problem

0 coins

EDD does have a technical help page but it mostly covers password resets and basic login issues. For actual error codes you really are dependent on community knowledge or calling them directly.

0 coins

Final update from me since I posted about my availability status error earlier: called EDD and sure enough there was a data entry error in my original claim that was causing the availability field to reject updates. Agent fixed it in literally 5 minutes on their end. The X57 type errors really do seem to come back to account-level issues a lot of the time. Moral of the story is don't spin your wheels too long trying to fix it yourself - if basic browser fixes don't work within a day, just call EDD.

0 coins

Really appreciate you coming back to update. Glad it got sorted!

0 coins

5 minutes on the phone vs potentially weeks of confusion trying to troubleshoot blindly. The phone call really is worth it, especially if you use something like Claimyr to actually get through.

0 coins

Good ending to this thread. Hope OP gets their final issue cleared soon too
