How long does it take to get unemployment back pay from Washington ESD?
Filed my initial claim 6 weeks ago and it was finally approved last Tuesday after being stuck in adjudication. Washington ESD told me I'd get back pay for all the weeks I was waiting, but my account still shows $0 deposited. I've been filing my weekly claims this whole time like they said to do. Does anyone know how long it actually takes for the back pay to hit your account once your claim gets approved? I'm behind on rent and really need this money.

Back pay usually processes within 2-3 business days after your claim approval, but it can take up to 5 business days depending on your bank. Make sure you check both your ESD account and your bank account - sometimes there's a delay between when ESD shows it as paid and when your bank actually posts it.

•Thanks! It's only been 3 days so maybe I need to be more patient. Just stressed about bills piling up.

•Check your payment method too - if you have a debit card it might be faster than direct deposit

I was in the exact same situation last month. Took 4 days for my back pay to show up after approval. Got like $2800 all at once which was a huge relief. Just hang in there!

•That gives me hope! Did you get separate payments for each week or one lump sum?

Nia Thompson
•One lump sum for all the back weeks. Then my regular weekly benefits started coming separately after that.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on this, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). They helped me get connected to an actual agent when I was having issues with my back pay. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they basically call for you and get you connected to an agent. I was skeptical too but it worked when nothing else did.

•I can vouch for Claimyr too. Used it when my payments got stopped randomly and needed to talk to someone immediately.

Washington ESD is SO SLOW with everything. I waited 8 weeks for my claim to get approved and then another week for the back pay. The system is completely broken and they don't care that people are struggling to pay rent and buy food while they take their sweet time.

•I feel you on this. The whole process is designed to make people give up and not claim benefits they're entitled to.

•While the delays are frustrating, most back pay issues do resolve within a week of claim approval. The adjudication process is what takes the longest.

Make sure you didn't miss any weekly claim certifications during your waiting period. If you missed even one week, that could delay your back pay processing. Log into your account and check that all weeks are showing as filed.

•I filed every single week like they told me to. All my weekly claims show as submitted in my account.

•Good, then you should be all set. The back pay will include all those weeks once it processes.

just went thru this myself, took exactly 72 hours from when my claim switched from pending to approved for the money to hit my bank account

•That's encouraging! Mine switched to approved on Tuesday so hopefully by Friday.

•Same timeline for me too - 3 business days seems to be pretty standard

The key thing to remember is that Washington ESD processes back pay as a separate batch from regular weekly payments. So even if your regular weekly claim gets paid on schedule, the back pay might come a day or two later. Don't panic if you see one but not the other initially.

•This is really good to know! I was wondering why I got my current week but not the back weeks.

Aisha Abdullah
•Exactly - they run different processing schedules. Back pay usually comes through by end of the week though.

I had a weird situation where my back pay got split into two payments because I had a break in employment during my waiting period. Washington ESD had to calculate different benefit amounts for different weeks. Might be worth checking if you had any work during your adjudication period.

•No work for me during the waiting period, so hopefully it's just one payment coming.

Zoe Kyriakidou
•Then yeah, should be straightforward. One lump sum for all your back weeks.

Has anyone had issues with back pay being less than expected? I calculated what I should get but the amount was lower.

Zara Ahmed
•Could be taxes being withheld if you elected that option, or partial benefits if you reported any work during those weeks.

Jamal Brown
•Oh right, I did elect to have taxes taken out. That's probably why it was less than I calculated.

The waiting is the worst part honestly. I kept checking my account every few hours when I was waiting for my back pay. Try to distract yourself - the money will come through.

•Yeah I've been obsessively checking my bank account. Thanks for the reminder to chill out a bit.

Question - do you get back pay for the waiting week too or does that not count? I'm confused about whether the first week gets paid or not.

Zara Ahmed
•Washington has eliminated the waiting week, so yes, you should get paid for your first eligible week too.

•Thanks! I wasn't sure if that had changed or not.

Try calling Washington ESD early morning like 7:30am right when they open. I got through yesterday to check on my back pay status and they were able to tell me exactly when it would process.

•I've tried calling but can never get through. Always busy or I get disconnected.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. Saved me the frustration of trying to call over and over.

My back pay came through on a Thursday which was weird because I usually get my regular benefits on Wednesdays. Don't assume it'll come on your normal payment day.

•Good point, I was expecting it to follow my normal schedule.

Giovanni Rossi
•Yeah back pay runs on its own schedule separate from weekly benefits

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims while you're waiting for back pay. I know someone who stopped filing thinking they'd get everything in one payment and it screwed up their whole claim.

•Definitely still filing every week! Good reminder though.

•Yes this is super important - keep filing no matter what or you'll lose those weeks

Check if your bank has any holds on large deposits. Some banks will hold unemployment payments over a certain amount for 24-48 hours even if ESD shows it as sent.

Sean O'Donnell
•Oh wow I never thought of that. I'll call my bank if it doesn't show up by tomorrow.

•Yeah it's annoying but some banks do this automatically for fraud protection

The good news is once you get your back pay, you'll be caught up and your regular weekly payments should be smooth sailing from there. The initial approval is always the hardest part.

If you're really desperate for money before the back pay comes through, some credit unions offer emergency loans against pending unemployment benefits. Just a thought if you absolutely can't wait.
0 coins
Sean O'Donnell
•Interesting, I hadn't heard of that option. Hopefully I won't need it but good to know.

Zara Ahmed
•Be careful with those loans though - the interest rates can be pretty high even for emergency situations

I'm in Washington too and got my back pay exactly 4 business days after approval. Came to $3,200 for 8 weeks of waiting. Life saver when it finally hit my account!

•Good luck! The relief when that money hits is incredible after all the stress of waiting

One more tip - make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your ESD account. If there's any issue with your bank info, it could delay the payment significantly while they try to process it.

Sean O'Donnell
•Just double checked and everything looks correct. Same account I've been using for other payments.

•Smart to verify - wrong bank info is one of the most common causes of payment delays
