How long does it take for Washington ESD unemployment to pay after approval?

My claim was finally approved last Wednesday after being stuck in adjudication for almost a month. I've been filing my weekly claims but haven't received any payment yet. It's been 5 days since approval and I'm starting to worry something went wrong. How long does it typically take for Washington ESD to actually send the money after your claim gets approved? I really need this payment to catch up on rent.

Usually takes 2-3 business days after approval for the first payment to hit your account. Since you were approved Wednesday, you should see it by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your account.

Thanks! I double checked and my bank info looks right. Hopefully it shows up Monday.

mine took 4 days but that was during a holiday week

After approval, Washington ESD typically processes payments within 2-3 business days. However, if this is your first payment after a long adjudication period, it might take slightly longer because they're processing multiple weeks at once. You should receive all back payments from when you first filed.

0 coins

That's what I'm hoping for - about 4 weeks worth of back pay. Will it all come as one lump sum or separate payments?

0 coins

Should be one payment covering all the approved weeks. Check your payment history in your account to see the breakdown.

I had the same issue last month - claim approved but no payment for almost a week. Turned out there was a verification issue they didn't tell me about. I ended up using Claimyr to get through to an agent who fixed it immediately. You can check them out at claimyr.com, they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

What kind of verification issue? I'm worried there might be something like that holding up my payment too.

0 coins

They needed to verify my identity even though I'd already done that during the initial application. The agent was able to clear it up in 5 minutes once I got through.

0 coins

Never heard of Claimyr but getting through to ESD is impossible these days

0 coins

FIVE DAYS?? I've been waiting THREE WEEKS since my approval and still nothing! This system is completely broken. I call every single day and either get hung up on or sit on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

0 coins

Three weeks is definitely not normal. There's probably an issue with your account that needs to be resolved.

0 coins

That's what I figured but I can't get anyone on the phone to help me figure out what's wrong!

0 coins

That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr above - they help you actually get through to speak with someone at ESD instead of wasting hours on hold.

0 coins

check your account online to see if there are any alerts or pending issues. sometimes theres stuff you need to do that they dont tell you about

0 coins

Good idea, I'll log in right now and check for any alerts I might have missed.

0 coins

yeah look under the alerts tab and also check if your weekly claims are showing as processed

0 coins

Don't panic yet! I know 5 days feels like forever when you're waiting for money but that's still within the normal timeframe. Washington ESD has been pretty good about payments once claims are approved, unlike during the pandemic when everything was a mess.

0 coins

Yeah I keep reminding myself it hasn't been that long, I'm just stressed about bills piling up.

0 coins

Totally understand the stress. The waiting is the worst part of this whole process.

0 coins

Also make sure you've been filing your weekly claims consistently. Even after approval, you still need to file every week to receive payment for that week. Missed weekly claims can delay payments.

0 coins

Yes I've been filing every Sunday since I first applied. Haven't missed a single week.

0 coins

wait you have to keep filing even after approval? i thought once you were approved that was it

0 coins

@profile9 No, you have to file a weekly claim every week to get paid for that week. Approval just means you're eligible, but you still need to certify each week.

0 coins

One thing to check - if you have a Bank of America debit card from a previous claim, make sure it's still active. Washington ESD defaults to that card if you had one before, and if it's expired or closed, your payment could be delayed.

0 coins

I never had a debit card from them, I set up direct deposit to my checking account when I first applied.

0 coins

Oh man this happened to me! Had an old ESD debit card from 2019 that was expired and it took forever to figure out why my payments weren't coming.

The payment timing also depends on your bank. Some banks process ACH transfers faster than others. Credit unions are usually pretty quick, big banks like Chase or Wells Fargo can take an extra day or two.

0 coins

I have a credit union so hopefully that helps speed things up.

0 coins

Yeah credit unions are usually same day or next day for government payments in my experience.

0 coins

I'm in the exact same boat - approved Thursday, no payment yet. This is so frustrating when you're counting on this money to survive. At least we're not alone in this I guess.

0 coins

Glad to know I'm not the only one! Hopefully we both see payments early this week.

0 coins

Fingers crossed! I'll update if mine comes through.

0 coins

Just want to add my experience - I was approved on a Friday and got paid the following Tuesday. So about 4 business days total. The waiting is nerve-wracking but try to be patient for at least a full week before panicking.

0 coins

That's reassuring, thank you! Tuesday would be exactly one week for me so I'll wait until then before getting worried.

0 coins

Good plan! And remember the first payment after adjudication is usually bigger since it includes all the back weeks.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't call the regular customer service line. I wasted HOURS trying to get through just to ask about payment timing. Save yourself the headache.

0 coins

Tell me about it! I've probably spent 20 hours on hold this month for nothing.

0 coins

This is why services like Claimyr exist - they actually get you connected to someone who can help instead of wasting your time on hold.

0 coins

Check your online account under 'Payment History' - it should show pending payments even before they hit your bank account. That'll give you peace of mind that it's processing.

0 coins

Great tip! I just checked and I can see pending payments listed. Looks like they're processing!

0 coins

Perfect! Once they show as pending, you should have the money within 1-2 days.

0 coins

Mine shows pending too! Thanks for the tip about checking payment history.

0 coins

For future reference, first payments after adjudication almost always take longer than regular weekly payments. Once you're in the regular cycle, payments are much more predictable.

0 coins

Good to know for next time. Hopefully I won't need unemployment again anytime soon though!

0 coins

Haha yeah that's the goal! But at least now you know what to expect if you ever need it again.

0 coins

Just saw your update about seeing pending payments - that's awesome! You should definitely have your money by Tuesday at the latest. The hardest part is over.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the help! This thread has been so reassuring. I'll update when the payment actually hits my account.

0 coins

Please do update! It helps other people in the same situation to know the timeline.

0 coins

the waiting game is the worst part of unemployment. been there myself multiple times unfortunately. but once washington esd approves you, they're pretty reliable about getting payments out

0 coins

Yeah the uncertainty is definitely the hardest part. Thanks for the reassurance!

0 coins

no problem! we've all been there and it sucks but you'll get through it

0 coins

FWIW I had a similar timeline - approved Wednesday, payment showed up Monday morning. Hang in there, it's coming!

0 coins

That's exactly what I needed to hear! Monday can't come soon enough.

0 coins

I know the feeling! Try to stay busy this weekend so you're not constantly checking your bank account like I did lol

0 coins

Pro tip: set up text alerts with your bank for deposits over a certain amount. That way you'll know immediately when your unemployment payment hits instead of obsessively checking your balance.

0 coins

Smart idea! I'm definitely going to set that up right now.

0 coins

It's a game changer for your sanity during unemployment periods. One less thing to worry about constantly.

0 coins

Sounds like you're all set based on seeing the pending payments! Just wanted to add that if anyone else is reading this and having payment issues after more than a week, definitely try to speak with someone at ESD. Don't just wait indefinitely.

0 coins

Yeah I really need to figure out how to actually talk to someone about my 3 week delay. This is ridiculous.

0 coins

@profile5 Seriously check out Claimyr if you're having trouble getting through. It's specifically designed to help people reach ESD agents when the regular phone lines aren't working.

0 coins

Getting through to an actual person is half the battle with unemployment issues. Whatever gets you connected is worth it.

0 coins

I went through something similar recently - approved on a Tuesday and got my payment that Friday. The key thing that helped my anxiety was checking the payment history section like others mentioned. Once I could see it was "in process" I knew it was just a matter of waiting for my bank to receive it. Also worth noting that the first payment after a long adjudication period often includes a nice chunk of back pay, so it's usually worth the wait! Keep checking that payment history section - it really does show the status before it hits your account.
