How do I get my Washington ESD unemployment back pay after claim approval?
My Washington ESD claim was finally approved after being stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks, but I'm only getting payments for the last 2 weeks. What happened to all the back pay I should have gotten from when I first filed? My account shows the claim start date was correct but the payment history only shows recent weeks. Has anyone dealt with this before? I really need that back pay to catch up on bills that piled up during the adjudication delay.

You need to make sure you filed your weekly claims for all those weeks during adjudication. Washington ESD doesn't automatically pay you for weeks you didn't claim, even if your claim gets approved later. Check your online account and see if there are any weeks showing as 'not filed' or 'missing'.

•I did file every week like I was supposed to! That's what's so confusing about this whole situation.

•Then you need to call Washington ESD and ask them to manually review your payment history. Sometimes there's a glitch in their system after long adjudications.

Same thing happened to me last year. The back pay should process automatically within 1-2 business days after approval, but sometimes it takes longer if there were complications during adjudication. Give it a few more days and if nothing shows up, definitely call.

•How long did yours take to show up? It's been 4 days since my approval and I'm getting really worried.

•Mine took about a week total. The first payment came through normally, then the back pay hit my account 3 days later as a lump sum.

If you need to reach Washington ESD about missing back pay, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to a real person. I was trying to call for weeks about a similar issue and kept getting the busy signal or getting disconnected. With Claimyr you just give them your info and they call Washington ESD for you until they get through, then connect you to the agent. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Never heard of this before but might be worth a try. The Washington ESD phone lines are absolutely impossible to get through on.

•Thanks, I'll look into this. I've been trying to call for days with no luck getting through to anyone who can help with the back pay issue.

•Just be careful with third party services. Make sure you're comfortable sharing your info before using something like this.

Check if your weekly claims during adjudication were marked as 'pending' vs 'processed'. If they were just sitting as pending, that might explain why the back pay isn't showing up. You might need Washington ESD to manually process those weeks.

•How do I check that status? I don't see those details in my online account.

•Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look under the weekly claims section. It should show the status of each claim you filed.

ugh this is exactly why I hate dealing with Washington ESD. They make everything so complicated and then act like it's your fault when their system doesn't work right. You shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get money you're entitled to.

•Tell me about it. I've been dealing with them for months and it's been nothing but headaches and runaround.

•I just want my back pay so I can pay my rent. This whole process has been a nightmare from start to finish.

One thing to double-check - make sure there weren't any 'able and available' or job search requirement issues during those weeks. If Washington ESD flagged any of your weekly claims for not meeting requirements, that could hold up the back pay even after your main claim is approved.

•I've been logging my job searches every week and marking that I'm able and available. Is there somewhere specific I should look to see if there were flags?

•Check your correspondence inbox in the online account. Any issues would generate a letter or notice that shows up there.

•I just checked and don't see any letters about job search or availability issues. Just the original adjudication notice and then the approval.

Have you received your debit card yet? Sometimes the back pay gets loaded onto a different payment method than your regular weekly benefits, especially if there was a long gap.

Ravi Malhotra
•Yes I have the card and the recent payments went on there fine. Would back pay go somewhere else?

•It should all go to the same place, but I've heard of glitches where lump sum payments get processed differently. Definitely worth asking when you call.

This happened to my brother and it turned out Washington ESD had put a hold on his back pay because of some identity verification thing that never got cleared up properly during adjudication. Even though his regular claim was approved, the back pay was stuck in a separate review. Took another 2 weeks to sort out.

Ravi Malhotra
•Oh no, how would I know if there's a separate hold on the back pay? This is getting so confusing.

•He had to call and specifically ask about it. It wasn't showing up anywhere in his online account.

I used Claimyr again last week for a different issue and they're really good at getting you to the right department. When you tell them it's about missing back pay, they know exactly which Washington ESD number to call and which menu options to navigate. Much better than trying to figure out their phone system yourself.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already stretched thin financially.

•It's worth checking out their site for details. For me it was worth it just to avoid the stress of calling Washington ESD over and over with no results.

UPDATE: I finally got through to Washington ESD this morning (took 3 hours of calling) and found out what happened. Apparently when my claim went through adjudication, it created some kind of 'payment processing delay' for the back weeks. The agent said it should all process within 5-7 business days and show up as separate transactions. So frustrating that this wasn't explained anywhere in my approval notice.

•Glad you got answers! That's exactly the kind of thing they should put in the approval letter so people don't panic.

•Yeah that sounds like what happened to me too. The back pay will probably all hit at once in a few days.

•3 hours of calling just to get basic information... Washington ESD really needs to fix their communication process.

For future reference, back pay after adjudication usually processes as a batch job that runs every few days. It's not instant like regular weekly payments. Washington ESD should really make this clearer in their communications.

Ravi Malhotra
•That would have saved me so much stress if I had known that upfront. Why don't they explain these things better?

Anastasia Smirnova
•Because Washington ESD assumes everyone knows how their system works, which is obviously not the case for most people filing claims.

same boat here, got approved two days ago but only seeing current week payments

The fact that you had to spend 3 hours on the phone just to get basic information about YOUR OWN MONEY is absolutely ridiculous. Washington ESD needs a complete overhaul of how they handle these situations.

•Seriously, the whole system is broken. They make it so hard to get help with legitimate questions.

•At least I finally got answers, but yeah, it shouldn't be this difficult to find out what's happening with your benefits.

Thanks for posting the update! I'm in a similar situation and was starting to worry something was wrong with my claim. Good to know this is apparently normal after adjudication.

Glad you got through eventually! For anyone else dealing with this, Claimyr has been really reliable for getting connected to Washington ESD agents who can actually explain what's happening with your claim status. Sometimes it's worth using a service that specializes in navigating their phone system.

Final tip for anyone reading this thread - always ask Washington ESD agents for a reference number or case number when you call about payment issues. That way if you need to call back, the next agent can look up exactly what was discussed and what action was supposed to be taken.

Ravi Malhotra
•Great advice! I did get a reference number and wrote down everything the agent told me.

•This is smart. Too many times I've called back and had to explain the whole situation over again because there was no record of the previous call.

FINAL UPDATE: Back pay came through this morning! Total of 6 weeks worth showed up as 3 separate transactions. Apparently they batch it by some internal processing schedule. Thanks everyone for the help and advice throughout this process!
