How to get back pay unemployment from Washington ESD - retroactive benefits?
I just got approved for unemployment after being in adjudication for 6 weeks. My claim was backdated to when I first applied but I'm only seeing payments for the last 2 weeks on my account. How do I get the back pay unemployment benefits I'm owed from Washington ESD? I filed weekly claims the whole time but nothing was paid out during adjudication. Should I be getting retroactive payments automatically or do I need to do something specific?

The back pay should process automatically within 3-5 business days after your claim is approved. Check your payment history on the Washington ESD website to see if they're showing as pending. Sometimes it takes a few days for all the retroactive weeks to show up in your account.

•Thanks! I'll check again tomorrow. Just worried because I really need those back payments to catch up on bills.

•same situation here, took about a week for all my back pay to hit my account after approval

You need to make sure you filed all your weekly claims during the adjudication period. If you missed any weeks, you might need to request those separately. Washington ESD won't automatically pay for weeks you didn't claim.

•I filed every single week like they told me to, even though it kept saying $0 payment. So frustrating to wait this long.

•Good, then you should definitely get all that back pay. The system just takes time to process everything retroactively.

I had a similar issue and couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone to check my back pay status. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Really helped me get answers about my retroactive payments.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke waiting for my unemployment.

•It's worth it when you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. Way better than spending hours on hold just to get disconnected.

•Never heard of this but might try it if my back pay doesn't show up soon

Washington ESD owes me like $4,000 in back pay and it's been 3 weeks since approval. This is ridiculous! How are we supposed to survive while they take their sweet time processing payments we're legally entitled to?

•I understand the frustration but the system is processing thousands of claims. Have you checked if there are any outstanding issues on your account?

•No issues showing anywhere. Just says approved but no back payments. This whole system is broken.

Make sure you're looking at the right place for your payment history. Go to the main Washington ESD unemployment page and check under 'Payment Information' not just your weekly claim status.

•I've been checking there every day. Still just shows the recent payments, nothing for the 6 weeks I was in adjudication.

•Give it a few more days. The back pay usually processes in batches and can take up to a week after approval.

this happened to my sister too, she had to call and specifically ask about her retroactive benefits. took like 2 hours on hold but they fixed it

•I've tried calling but can never get through. Either busy signal or I get disconnected after waiting forever.

•That's why services like Claimyr exist. They handle the calling nightmare for you so you can actually reach a human at Washington ESD.

Back pay unemployment benefits should be automatic if you filed all your weekly claims during adjudication. Washington ESD is required to pay retroactively from your claim start date. If it's been more than 5 business days since approval, there might be a technical issue.

•It's been 6 business days now. Should I be worried something went wrong?

•I'd definitely contact them at that point. Sometimes there are processing delays but 6 days is pushing it for retroactive payments.

•Same thing happened to me last month. Had to get an agent involved to release the back pay manually.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing. I thought back pay was automatic but then I read somewhere you have to request it? Which is it?
0 coins
Sofia Torres
•It's automatic as long as you filed your weekly claims during the waiting period. You don't need to make a separate request for retroactive benefits.

•OK good, I was getting worried I missed some step. Thanks for clarifying!

Check if your direct deposit info is correct. Sometimes back pay gets delayed if there are banking issues. I had to update my account info and then the payments went through.

Dylan Wright
•My direct deposit is the same as always and the recent payments went through fine. Just missing the back pay portion.

CosmicCowboy
•Then it's probably just a processing delay. Washington ESD handles retroactive payments differently than regular weekly benefits.

I got my back pay but it was way less than I expected. Turns out they deducted taxes and other stuff from all the retroactive weeks at once. Made it look like I was missing payments when really it was just the deductions.

Dylan Wright
•Oh wow, I didn't think about that. How do you see the breakdown of what was deducted?

•There should be a detailed payment history that shows gross vs net for each week. Check under your account information.

Are you sure you're eligible for back pay? If you were working part-time during adjudication you might not get full retroactive benefits for those weeks.
0 coins
Dylan Wright
•No, I was completely unemployed the whole time. Haven't worked since I got laid off 2 months ago.

Javier Cruz
•Then you should definitely get full back pay for all those weeks. Keep checking your account.

Washington ESD told me back pay can take up to 10 business days to process after claim approval. Something about their system processing retroactive payments in a different queue than regular weekly benefits.

•That's helpful to know. I'm at day 6 so maybe I need to be more patient.

•Yeah don't panic yet. The back pay will come, Washington ESD just moves slowly on everything.

I used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD about my missing back pay and they were able to expedite it. Had the money within 2 days after talking to an agent. Sometimes you just need someone to look at your account manually.

•I'm seriously considering trying that service. This waiting game is killing me financially.

•It's worth it when you really need answers. Way better than the endless phone tag with their regular number.

Update us when you get your back pay! I'm in a similar situation and want to know if it eventually comes through automatically.

The key is making sure you filed every single weekly claim during adjudication. Even if it said $0 payment, you still needed to certify each week to be eligible for back pay once approved.

Dylan Wright
•Yes, I filed religiously every week even though it was depressing seeing $0 every time.

•Good, then you did everything right. The back pay should process soon.

washington esd is such a pain. took me 3 months to get my back pay and i had to fight for every penny. hope you have better luck than i did

•3 months?! That's terrifying. What was the holdup in your case?

•they kept saying there were 'system issues' but really i think they just hoped i'd give up. finally got an agent who manually processed everything

Make sure you're not confusing partial payments with missing back pay. Sometimes Washington ESD pays out retroactive benefits in smaller chunks over several days rather than one lump sum.
0 coins
Dylan Wright
•That could be it. I'll watch for multiple deposits over the next few days instead of expecting one big payment.
0 coins
Diego Chavez
•Exactly. Each week of back pay might process separately even though they're all retroactive.

NeonNebula
If you still don't see your back pay by next week, definitely contact Washington ESD. Sometimes claims get stuck in processing and need manual intervention to release retroactive benefits.

Just want to mention that back pay includes any dependency allowances if you qualified for those too. Make sure you're calculating the full amount you should receive, not just the base unemployment benefit.
0 coins
Dylan Wright
•I don't have any dependents so it should just be the regular weekly amount times 6 weeks.
0 coins
Sean Kelly
•Then it should be straightforward to calculate. Hope it shows up soon!

Back pay from Washington ESD usually shows up on the same day of the week as your regular benefits. So if you normally get paid on Wednesday, check for back pay on Wednesday too.

Dylan Wright
•That's a good tip. My regular payments come on Tuesday so I'll watch for back pay then.

•Yeah, they try to keep the same payment schedule for consistency.

I had the exact same situation last month - approved after 5 weeks in adjudication but only saw recent payments at first. It took about 8 business days for all my back pay to hit my account. Washington ESD processes retroactive payments in a separate batch system, so they don't always show up immediately with your regular weekly benefits. Keep checking your payment history daily and don't panic if it takes a full week or two. The system is slow but the money will come through as long as you filed all your weekly claims during adjudication (which it sounds like you did). Hang in there!

•Thanks Maya, this gives me so much hope! 8 business days isn't too bad considering how long the whole adjudication process took. I was starting to worry something went wrong since everyone else seemed to be getting their back pay faster. Good to know the separate batch system is normal - that explains why my regular payments are coming through but not the retroactive ones yet. I'll keep checking daily and try to be patient for another week or so before panicking.
