Do you get back pay for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?

My unemployment claim was finally approved after being stuck in adjudication for almost 6 weeks. During that time I kept filing my weekly claims like they told me to, but obviously wasn't getting paid anything. Now that it's approved, will Washington ESD automatically send me all the back payments for those weeks I was waiting? Or do I need to do something special to get the retroactive payments? I'm really hoping I don't have to go through some complicated process to get the money I should have been receiving all along.

Yes, you should get back pay automatically! Washington ESD will process all your approved weekly claims from when you first filed. It usually takes 3-5 business days after approval for the back payments to hit your account. Make sure you filed for every week during adjudication - if you missed any weeks you might need to request those separately.

Thank god! I was so worried I'd have to fight for it. I did file every single week so hopefully it all comes through.

same thing happened to me last year, got like $4800 in back pay all at once after 5 weeks of waiting

The back pay comes automatically but there are some things to watch for. If any of your weekly claims during adjudication had issues (like reporting work hours incorrectly), those specific weeks might get held up even after your main claim is approved. Also, if you had any waiting week requirements, that affects your first payable week.

What do you mean by waiting week requirements? Is that something that would show up in my claim details?

Washington eliminated the waiting week in 2023, so you shouldn't have that issue. But check your weekly claim summaries to make sure all weeks show as payable.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your back pay status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals when I needed to verify my retroactive payments were processing correctly.

Wait, is this some kind of paid service? Seems sketchy to pay someone just to make a phone call.

It's legit - they just handle the calling queue for you so you don't have to sit on hold. When I used it for my back pay question, I got connected to an actual ESD rep within 20 minutes instead of calling for days.

I've heard of this too, might be worth it if you really need to talk to someone about missing back payments

be careful about spending that back pay right away!! i got mine and spent it all thinking i was good, then ESD sent me an overpayment notice 2 months later saying i owed money back. turns out there was some issue with my work search requirements during one of those weeks

0 coins

Oh no, that's terrifying! How do I make sure that won't happen to me?

That's why it's important to review each weekly claim summary carefully. If there were any job search issues or unreported income, it could trigger an overpayment later.

yeah exactly, i thought filing the weekly claims was enough but apparently i messed up the work search log for a couple weeks

The back pay should definitely come through automatically. I went through the same thing earlier this year - 4 weeks in adjudication hell, then boom, all the money showed up in my checking account at once. Just make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your ESD account or you'll be waiting even longer for paper checks.

0 coins

Good point about direct deposit. I should double check that's still set up right.

0 coins

Paper checks can take 7-10 business days, so definitely verify your bank info if you want the money fast!

Don't count your chickens before they hatch. I know someone who thought they were getting back pay and it turned out their employer appealed the decision. Had to go through a whole hearing process and ended up owing money back to ESD.

0 coins

How would I know if my employer appealed? Would I get some kind of notice?

0 coins

Freya Thomsen

•

Yeah, you'd get mail from ESD about any appeals. But employers have 30 days to appeal after your claim is approved.

True, but most back pay situations are straightforward. If there was going to be an employer appeal, it usually happens during the initial adjudication period.

I'm dealing with something similar but my claim has been in adjudication for 8 weeks now! Still filing weekly but getting really desperate. Did you do anything special to get yours moving or did it just finally get processed?

0 coins

I honestly just kept waiting and filing weekly. I tried calling a bunch but could never get through to anyone.

That's exactly when I used Claimyr - after weeks of not being able to reach anyone at ESD. Got connected and found out my case just needed one additional document uploaded.

Maybe I should try that claimyr thing then, this is getting ridiculous

YES you get back pay! But seriously, Washington ESD's system is so broken. Six weeks in adjudication is insane for what should be a simple approval process. The fact that we even have to ask these questions shows how poorly they communicate with claimants.

Amen to that. The whole system needs an overhaul.

0 coins

I mean, I'm just grateful it finally got approved. But yeah, the lack of communication during those 6 weeks was super stressful.

Make sure to keep track of exactly how much back pay you receive and compare it to what you calculated you should get. Sometimes there are deductions you weren't expecting (like union dues or taxes) that make the amount look wrong even when it's correct.

0 coins

Good thinking. I should probably write down what I think I should get before the payments come through.

Yeah and don't forget about the federal and state taxes that get taken out automatically unless you opted out

0 coins

The back pay comes but sometimes in weird chunks. Like I got 3 weeks worth, then 2 weeks, then the final week a few days later. Don't panic if it doesn't all come at once - just give it a full week to sort itself out.

0 coins

Okay that's good to know. I was expecting it all in one lump sum but I guess that makes sense that it might be split up.

same thing happened to me, got nervous when only part of it showed up at first

If you don't see the back pay within a week of approval, that's when you need to call ESD. Sometimes there are technical glitches that prevent the automatic processing. I had to call and they manually released my back payments after some kind of system error.

0 coins

How did you manage to get through on the phone? Every time I've tried it's been impossible.

Honestly I got lucky and called right at 8am on a Tuesday. But I know people have used that Claimyr service to avoid the phone hassle.

8am on weekdays is definitely the best time to call if youre going to try the regular way

Just wanted to add that if you had any partial weeks (like if you were laid off mid-week), those calculations can be tricky for back pay. Make sure ESD calculated those weeks correctly because they sometimes mess up the partial week payments.

0 coins

I was laid off on a Friday so hopefully that's straightforward enough for their system to handle.

0 coins

Friday layoffs are usually clean, it's the mid-week ones that cause calculation problems

0 coins

Congrats on getting approved! The relief when that adjudication finally ends is incredible. Your back pay should definitely come through automatically - just keep an eye on your account over the next few days.

0 coins

Thank you! Yeah it's such a huge relief. I was starting to think it would never get resolved.

Those long adjudications are the worst. Glad yours worked out!

Awesome news that it got approved! I went through something similar last year - 7 weeks in adjudication and was panicking about money the whole time. The back pay does come automatically, usually within 3-5 business days like others mentioned. One thing I learned though is to screenshot your weekly claim summaries showing all those weeks you filed during adjudication, just in case there's ever a question later about what you're owed. The system usually works correctly but having that backup documentation gave me peace of mind. Hope you get your money soon!
