Does Washington ESD unemployment back pay for delayed claims?

My unemployment claim was stuck in adjudication for almost 6 weeks and just got approved yesterday. I've been filing my weekly claims this whole time but haven't received any payments. Does Washington ESD automatically back pay for all those weeks I was waiting, or do I need to do something special to get those payments? I'm really stressed about this because I'm behind on rent and bills.

Yes, Washington ESD does back pay! Once your claim is approved, they should automatically process all the weekly claims you filed during adjudication. The payments usually show up within 2-3 business days after approval. Make sure you kept filing those weekly claims - that's the key.

Thank you! I did keep filing every week even though I wasn't getting paid. Such a relief to know it's automatic.

0 coins

Same thing happened to me last year. Got like $4,800 in back pay all at once after 5 weeks of waiting.

Make sure to check your payment history on the Washington ESD website. Sometimes there can be issues with individual weeks that need to be resolved separately.

0 coins

Good point, I'll log in and check that right now.

0 coins

The payment history section is under 'View Claim Status' if you're looking for it

Been there - the waiting is brutal but Washington ESD will back pay to your benefit year begin date as long as you were filing weekly claims. If you have any issues with specific weeks not showing up, you might need to call them to sort it out.

0 coins

Good luck getting through on the phone though. I've been trying for weeks to resolve a back pay issue.

I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

0 coins

Really? How does that work exactly? I'm desperate at this point.

0 coins

The back pay should include everything from when you first became eligible, not just from when the claim was approved. That's federal law.

0 coins

Exactly right. The adjudication period doesn't count against you as long as you kept filing.

0 coins

What if I missed filing one week during adjudication? Can I still get that week?

0 coins

You might be able to file a late claim for that week, but you'll need to call Washington ESD to request it.

0 coins

omg 6 weeks?? mine has been pending for 2 weeks and im already freaking out

0 coins

I know it's scary! Just keep filing your weekly claims no matter what. That's the most important thing.

0 coins

2 weeks is still pretty normal for adjudication. Don't panic yet.

0 coins

Washington ESD owes me back pay too but some of my weeks are showing as 'disqualified' even though my main claim got approved. Anyone know what that means?

0 coins

That usually means there was an issue with your job search requirements or work availability for those specific weeks. You'll need to call and ask about those individual disqualifications.

0 coins

I had the same thing happen. Some weeks got denied because I didn't report looking for work properly, but the rest of my back pay came through fine.

0 coins

The back pay system is actually pretty reliable once your claim is approved. I got 8 weeks of back pay totaling about $3,200 when my adjudication finally cleared.

0 coins

Did you have to pay taxes on all that back pay at once?

0 coins

Yeah they took out the normal tax withholding but it was still a nice chunk to get all at once.

0 coins

just went through this exact same thing. took 4 weeks but got all my back pay. washington esd automatically processed everything once they approved my claim

0 coins

That's so reassuring to hear! How long after approval did the payments actually hit your account?

0 coins

first payment showed up 2 days later, then the rest came over the next week

0 coins

Word of warning - if you have any outstanding overpayments from previous claims, Washington ESD might offset some of your back pay to cover those debts.

0 coins

Oh no, I didn't even think about that. How would I know if I have any outstanding overpayments?

0 coins

Check your account under 'Overpayments' or look for any notices they sent you. Most people don't have this issue though.

0 coins

The Washington ESD system is so confusing. Why does adjudication take so long anyway?

0 coins

Usually it's because they need to verify information with your former employer or investigate separation issues. High volume doesn't help either.

0 coins

My adjudication was because my employer contested my claim. Took forever but Washington ESD sided with me in the end.

0 coins

I tried calling Washington ESD about my back pay status but could never get through. The phone system is impossible.

0 coins

That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they basically handle the calling for you and get you connected to an actual agent.

0 coins

Is it legit? I'm skeptical of paying for something that should be free.

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it actually works. Better than spending all day redialing for weeks.

0 coins

Pro tip: if your back pay doesn't show up within a week of claim approval, definitely call Washington ESD. Sometimes there are technical glitches that need manual fixes.

0 coins

Good advice. I had to call because one of my back pay weeks got stuck in processing.

0 coins

Same here - turned out to be a system error that they fixed quickly once I got through to someone.

0 coins

Does the back pay include the extra federal unemployment benefits or just the regular Washington state amount?

0 coins

Just the regular state benefits now. The federal supplements ended in 2021.

0 coins

Ah okay, I was thinking of the old pandemic programs. Thanks for clarifying.

0 coins

washington esd back pay saved my life honestly. was about to get evicted when that lump sum finally came through

0 coins

I'm in a similar boat right now. Really hoping mine comes through soon.

0 coins

Hang in there! The system works, it's just slow. Your back pay will come.

0 coins

Make sure you understand the difference between back pay and retroactive benefits. Back pay is for weeks you already filed during adjudication. Retroactive would be if you were eligible earlier but didn't file yet.

0 coins

That's a good distinction. Most people are dealing with back pay situations, not retroactive claims.

0 coins

Yeah mine is definitely back pay since I was filing weekly claims the whole time.

0 coins

I got my back pay but it was split across multiple deposits instead of one lump sum. Don't panic if that happens to you - it's normal.

0 coins

Same thing happened to me. I think they batch process payments differently for back pay.

0 coins

Good to know! I'll watch for multiple deposits then.

0 coins

The waiting is the worst part but Washington ESD is pretty good about actually paying what they owe once everything is sorted out. Hang in there!

0 coins

Thank you for the encouragement! This thread has been so helpful and reassuring.

0 coins

This community is great for unemployment support. We've all been through the stress of waiting for benefits.

0 coins

Update us when your back pay comes through! Always good to hear success stories.

0 coins

Will do! Feeling much more confident now that I know what to expect.

0 coins

Yeah these update posts help other people in similar situations too.

0 coins

One last thing - if you need help getting through to Washington ESD about any back pay issues, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually worked for me too. Worth checking out if you get stuck.

0 coins

I'll keep that in mind if I run into any problems. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice!

0 coins

Good luck with everything! The back pay should definitely come through for you.
