Does Washington ESD unemployment back pay for delayed claims?
My unemployment claim was stuck in adjudication for almost 6 weeks and just got approved yesterday. I've been filing my weekly claims this whole time but haven't received any payments. Does Washington ESD automatically back pay for all those weeks I was waiting, or do I need to do something special to get those payments? I'm really stressed about this because I'm behind on rent and bills.

Yes, Washington ESD does back pay! Once your claim is approved, they should automatically process all the weekly claims you filed during adjudication. The payments usually show up within 2-3 business days after approval. Make sure you kept filing those weekly claims - that's the key.

•Thank you! I did keep filing every week even though I wasn't getting paid. Such a relief to know it's automatic.

•Same thing happened to me last year. Got like $4,800 in back pay all at once after 5 weeks of waiting.

Make sure to check your payment history on the Washington ESD website. Sometimes there can be issues with individual weeks that need to be resolved separately.

•Good point, I'll log in and check that right now.

•The payment history section is under 'View Claim Status' if you're looking for it

Been there - the waiting is brutal but Washington ESD will back pay to your benefit year begin date as long as you were filing weekly claims. If you have any issues with specific weeks not showing up, you might need to call them to sort it out.

•Good luck getting through on the phone though. I've been trying for weeks to resolve a back pay issue.

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

•Really? How does that work exactly? I'm desperate at this point.

The back pay should include everything from when you first became eligible, not just from when the claim was approved. That's federal law.

•Exactly right. The adjudication period doesn't count against you as long as you kept filing.

•What if I missed filing one week during adjudication? Can I still get that week?

•You might be able to file a late claim for that week, but you'll need to call Washington ESD to request it.

•I know it's scary! Just keep filing your weekly claims no matter what. That's the most important thing.

•2 weeks is still pretty normal for adjudication. Don't panic yet.

Washington ESD owes me back pay too but some of my weeks are showing as 'disqualified' even though my main claim got approved. Anyone know what that means?

•That usually means there was an issue with your job search requirements or work availability for those specific weeks. You'll need to call and ask about those individual disqualifications.

•I had the same thing happen. Some weeks got denied because I didn't report looking for work properly, but the rest of my back pay came through fine.

The back pay system is actually pretty reliable once your claim is approved. I got 8 weeks of back pay totaling about $3,200 when my adjudication finally cleared.

•Did you have to pay taxes on all that back pay at once?

Oliver Schulz
•Yeah they took out the normal tax withholding but it was still a nice chunk to get all at once.

•That's so reassuring to hear! How long after approval did the payments actually hit your account?

•first payment showed up 2 days later, then the rest came over the next week

Word of warning - if you have any outstanding overpayments from previous claims, Washington ESD might offset some of your back pay to cover those debts.

Sofia Ramirez
•Oh no, I didn't even think about that. How would I know if I have any outstanding overpayments?

Javier Mendoza
•Check your account under 'Overpayments' or look for any notices they sent you. Most people don't have this issue though.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing. Why does adjudication take so long anyway?

•Usually it's because they need to verify information with your former employer or investigate separation issues. High volume doesn't help either.

•My adjudication was because my employer contested my claim. Took forever but Washington ESD sided with me in the end.

I tried calling Washington ESD about my back pay status but could never get through. The phone system is impossible.

•That's exactly why I started using Claimyr. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they basically handle the calling for you and get you connected to an actual agent.

•Is it legit? I'm skeptical of paying for something that should be free.

•I was skeptical too but it actually works. Better than spending all day redialing for weeks.

Pro tip: if your back pay doesn't show up within a week of claim approval, definitely call Washington ESD. Sometimes there are technical glitches that need manual fixes.

Does the back pay include the extra federal unemployment benefits or just the regular Washington state amount?

Dmitry Volkov
•Just the regular state benefits now. The federal supplements ended in 2021.

Make sure you understand the difference between back pay and retroactive benefits. Back pay is for weeks you already filed during adjudication. Retroactive would be if you were eligible earlier but didn't file yet.

StarStrider
•That's a good distinction. Most people are dealing with back pay situations, not retroactive claims.

•Yeah mine is definitely back pay since I was filing weekly claims the whole time.

I got my back pay but it was split across multiple deposits instead of one lump sum. Don't panic if that happens to you - it's normal.

•Same thing happened to me. I think they batch process payments differently for back pay.

The waiting is the worst part but Washington ESD is pretty good about actually paying what they owe once everything is sorted out. Hang in there!

One last thing - if you need help getting through to Washington ESD about any back pay issues, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier actually worked for me too. Worth checking out if you get stuck.
