Will I get unemployment back pay from Washington ESD after approval?
My Washington ESD claim was finally approved after being stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks. During that time I kept filing my weekly claims like they told me to, but I haven't received any payments yet. Will I get back pay for all those weeks I was waiting, or do I only get paid from when it was approved? I'm really hoping to get those back payments because I'm behind on rent and bills. Has anyone else dealt with this situation?

Yes, you should receive back pay for all the weeks you filed during adjudication as long as you were eligible and available for work during those weeks. Washington ESD typically processes retroactive payments within 2-3 business days after claim approval.

•That's such a relief to hear! Do they pay it all at once or spread it out over multiple deposits?

•Usually it comes as separate deposits for each week, but sometimes they batch a few weeks together. Check your payment history on your ESD account to track them.

I went through the same thing last year - took 8 weeks for my adjudication to clear. Got all my back pay within a week of approval, but had to wait another few days for the debit card to arrive in the mail.

•Did you have to do anything special to get the back pay or did it just automatically process?

•It was automatic once they approved my claim. Just had to make sure I had filed all my weekly claims during the waiting period.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on your back pay status, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that helps you actually reach an ESD agent by phone. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. I used it when I needed to verify my payment timeline.

•Never heard of this before - is it legit? I've been trying to call ESD for weeks about my payments.

•Yeah it's legitimate. They basically handle the calling and waiting for you so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. Worth it when you need answers about back pay.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already broke waiting for my unemployment money.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the back pay! I made the mistake of thinking I didn't need to since my claim was approved, but you still have to certify each week.

•Good point, I've been continuing to file. Should I report any odd jobs I did during the adjudication period on those back claims?

Ella rollingthunder87
•Yes absolutely! You need to report any work or income for each week, even the backdated ones. ESD will adjust your payment accordingly.

The back pay thing is so confusing. I had a similar situation but only got paid for some of the weeks, not all of them. Still don't understand why.

•That usually happens if you weren't available for work during certain weeks or if there were job search requirement issues. Did you check your claim details?

•I thought I was doing everything right but maybe I missed something with the job search log. This system is so complicated.

•Hang in there! I know how stressful it is. Just keep filing your weekly claims and hopefully yours will clear soon too.

One important thing to remember - your back pay is based on your weekly benefit amount calculated when your claim was originally filed. So if there were any wage changes or recalculations during adjudication, that could affect the total amount.

•How do I check what my weekly benefit amount is supposed to be? I want to make sure I'm getting the right amount.

Evelyn Rivera
•Log into your ESD account and look under 'Claim Details' or 'Payment Information'. It should show your weekly benefit amount and any deductions.

I'm still waiting for my adjudication to clear. Did you have to submit any additional documents or did it just randomly get approved?

Kolton Murphy
•They asked for some employment verification documents about halfway through the process. Took another 3 weeks after I submitted those.

Tony Brooks
•Ugh I submitted mine a month ago and still nothing. This process is ridiculous.

Pro tip: if you need to speak with someone at ESD about your back pay, try calling right at 8am when they open. That's usually when you have the best chance of getting through without waiting forever.

•I've tried that but still end up on hold for 2+ hours before getting disconnected. The phone system is terrible.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - it takes the headache out of trying to reach them by phone. They handle all the calling and waiting.

Wait, do you get back pay for the waiting week too? I thought Washington had eliminated that but I'm not sure if it applies to claims that were already in process.

Evelyn Rivera
•Washington eliminated the waiting week in 2020. If your claim was filed after that, you should get paid for the first week too.

•Good to know! I was confused about that policy change.

How long did your adjudication actually take? Mine has been pending for 2 weeks and I'm starting to panic.

Kolton Murphy
•6 weeks total for me, but I've heard of some taking 8-10 weeks depending on the issue. Try not to stress too much, just keep filing your weekly claims.

•6 weeks?! I don't know how I'm going to survive that long without income.

Make sure your direct deposit info is correct in your account! I had my back pay delayed because my bank info was wrong and they had to mail checks instead.

Kolton Murphy
•Good catch! I just double-checked mine and it looks correct. How long did it take to get the mailed checks?

Haley Bennett
•About a week for the checks to arrive, then had to wait for them to clear at my bank. Direct deposit is definitely faster.

This whole adjudication process is such BS. Why does it take so long for them to make a decision? Meanwhile people are struggling to pay rent and eat.

•I agree it's frustrating but they have to investigate each case thoroughly. Better than getting overpaid and having to pay it back later.

•I guess, but 6+ weeks seems excessive for what should be a straightforward review.

Just want to add - when you do get your back pay, remember that it's all taxable income. You might want to set aside some money for taxes if you're not having them withheld.

Kolton Murphy
•Good point! I forgot about the tax implications. Can I change my withholding settings after the fact?
0 coins
Ruby Knight
•Yes, you can update your tax withholding preferences in your ESD account under 'Tax Information'.

I'm curious - what was your adjudication issue about? Mine is for 'separation from employer' and I'm wondering if different issues take different amounts of time.
0 coins
Kolton Murphy
•Mine was also separation from employer. Had to provide documentation about why I left my job. Seems like that's a common one that takes a while.

Diego Castillo
•Yeah that makes sense. Thanks for sharing your experience, it gives me hope that mine will eventually get resolved too.

Does anyone know if back pay affects your total benefit duration? Like if I get 6 weeks of back pay, does that mean I have 6 fewer weeks available going forward?
0 coins
Evelyn Rivera
•Yes, back pay counts toward your total benefit year entitlement. So if you're entitled to 26 weeks total and get 6 weeks back pay, you'd have 20 weeks remaining.

Logan Stewart
•That's what I figured but wanted to confirm. Thanks for clarifying!

One more thing - if your back pay seems incorrect when you receive it, don't hesitate to contact ESD to question it. I had to call and get mine corrected because they missed one of my weekly certifications.

Kolton Murphy
•How did you manage to get through to them? I've heard the wait times are terrible.

Sean Matthews
•I actually used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Made the whole process much easier than trying to call myself.

•I keep seeing Claimyr mentioned - is it really worth it? I'm skeptical about paying for something like that.

•I was skeptical too at first, but when you're dealing with missing back pay worth hundreds or thousands of dollars, it's worth it to get it resolved quickly.

Update us when you get your back pay! I'm curious how long it actually takes from approval to payment.

•Will do! I'll check back in once I see the deposits hit my account.

Congratulations on finally getting approved! The 6-week wait must have been incredibly stressful. Just to add to what others have said - make sure you keep detailed records of all your weekly certifications and any correspondence from ESD during this process. If there are any discrepancies with your back pay, having that documentation will be really helpful. Also, once you start receiving payments, double-check that the amounts match what your weekly benefit calculation should be. I've seen cases where people received partial payments due to system glitches. Fingers crossed everything processes smoothly for you!
