Will I receive back pay for unemployment from Washington ESD after claim approval?
My Washington ESD claim was finally approved after being stuck in adjudication for almost 6 weeks. During this time I filed my weekly claims but obviously couldn't get paid since my claim wasn't processed yet. Now that it's approved, will Washington ESD automatically pay me for those weeks I was waiting? I'm really hoping to get that back pay since I've been struggling financially this whole time. Has anyone else dealt with this situation?

Yes, you should receive back pay for all the weeks you filed weekly claims during adjudication! Washington ESD will process those retroactive payments once your claim is approved. It usually takes 2-3 business days for the back pay to show up in your account after approval.

•That's such a relief to hear! I was worried I'd lost those weeks of benefits. Thanks for confirming this.

•Same thing happened to me last year - got all my back pay within a week of approval. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even during adjudication.

The key is that you continued filing your weekly claims during the adjudication period. As long as you did that and your claim gets approved, Washington ESD will pay you retroactively for those weeks. If you missed filing any weekly claims during that time, you might need to request those weeks be reopened.

•I made sure to file every single week even though I wasn't getting paid. Hopefully that means I'll get everything I'm owed.

•What if you forgot to file one week during adjudication? Can you still get that week back?

•You can request to reopen missed weeks but there's usually a time limit. Contact Washington ESD as soon as possible if you missed filing any weekly claims.

I went through this exact situation and got frustrated trying to reach Washington ESD to confirm my back pay status. The phone lines are always busy and the online system doesn't always show pending payments clearly. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent who confirmed my back pay was processing. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works - basically helps you get through the phone system without waiting on hold forever.

•That sounds really helpful! I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days to get confirmation about my back pay but can never get through.

•How much does Claimyr cost? I'm already struggling financially and don't want to spend money I don't have.

•The service focuses on getting you connected efficiently. Given how much time and stress it saves compared to calling repeatedly, it was worth it for me to get answers about my claim.

•Back pay can take a bit longer than regular weekly payments to process. Have you checked your payment history in your Washington ESD account to see if the payments are showing as issued?

•where do i find payment history? i just see my weekly claim status but nothing about payments

•Log into your Washington ESD account and look for 'Payment Information' or 'Payment History' section. It should show all issued payments including back pay.

I've been waiting 3 months for my adjudication to complete and I'm getting desperate. Reading this gives me hope that I'll at least get back pay for all these weeks I've been waiting. The financial stress is killing me.

Giovanni Ricci
•I totally understand that stress - those 6 weeks felt like forever. Hang in there, you should definitely get back pay once it's approved.

•3 months is way too long! Have you tried reaching out to your local legislator's office? Sometimes they can help expedite stuck claims.

•I hadn't thought of contacting my legislator. I'll try that if I can't get through to Washington ESD soon.

FINALLY someone else who got their back pay! I was starting to think Washington ESD just kept that money. Mine took about 5 business days to show up after approval but I got every penny I was owed.

•That's exactly what I needed to hear! How much back pay did you end up receiving if you don't mind me asking?

•I was in adjudication for 8 weeks so I got 8 weeks worth of back pay - around $3,200 total with the federal supplement that was happening at the time.

Make sure you keep documentation of all your weekly claim filings during adjudication. Washington ESD should have records but it's good to have your own backup in case there are any discrepancies with your back pay amount.

•Good point! I've been taking screenshots of my weekly claim confirmations just in case.

•Smart advice. I always keep records of everything with Washington ESD because their system can be glitchy sometimes.

Does anyone know if the back pay includes the waiting week? I'm confused about whether Washington ESD still has that requirement.

•Washington ESD eliminated the waiting week requirement during the pandemic and it hasn't been reinstated. You should get paid for your first eligible week.

•Oh that's great news! I was worried I'd lose that first week of benefits.

I had a similar experience but my back pay was split into multiple deposits over several days. Don't panic if you don't get it all at once - Washington ESD sometimes processes back pay in chunks.

Giovanni Ricci
•Good to know! I'll keep an eye on my account over the next week or so for multiple deposits.

•Yeah same here - got my back pay in 3 separate deposits but it all added up to the right amount eventually.

Has anyone had issues with back pay being less than expected? I'm worried Washington ESD might miscalculate something.

•If your back pay seems incorrect, you can request a detailed breakdown from Washington ESD. They should be able to explain how they calculated your retroactive benefits.

Oliver Becker
•I had this happen and it turned out I had some earnings reported that reduced my benefits for one of the weeks. The calculation was actually correct once I understood it.

For anyone still waiting in adjudication - don't give up on filing your weekly claims! I made that mistake early on and lost 2 weeks of benefits that I couldn't get back later.

•That's such important advice. I'm glad I kept filing even though it felt pointless at the time.

•Wait, you can't get those weeks back even if your claim is approved? That seems unfair.

•You can try to request reopening those weeks but it's not guaranteed and there are time limits. Much easier to just keep filing weekly.

I'm still waiting to hear about my adjudication but this thread is giving me hope that I'll get my back pay when it's finally approved. The waiting is the hardest part.

•Hang in there! I know it's tough but based on what everyone is saying here, the back pay should come through once you're approved.

Pro tip: if you're worried about your back pay amount, you can calculate it yourself by multiplying your weekly benefit amount by the number of weeks you were waiting. That way you'll know if Washington ESD's calculation is correct.

Giovanni Ricci
•That's a great idea! I'll do that calculation so I know what to expect.

•Don't forget to account for any earnings you reported during those weeks - that can reduce the back pay amount.

I used Claimyr recently when I had questions about my back pay timing and it was so much easier than trying to call Washington ESD directly. The agent was able to look up my account and confirm exactly when my retroactive payments would be processed. Way better than sitting on hold for hours!

•I might need to try that if I don't see my back pay soon. The uncertainty is driving me crazy.

•I was skeptical about using a service like that but honestly anything beats the frustration of trying to reach Washington ESD on your own.

Does back pay get deposited the same way as regular weekly benefits? Like if you have direct deposit set up, will the back pay go there too?
0 coins
NeonNomad
•Yes, back pay follows the same payment method as your regular benefits. If you have direct deposit, the back pay will go to the same account.

Just want to add that if you're getting anxious about back pay, try to be patient. Washington ESD's system can be slow but they do eventually process everything correctly in most cases.

Giovanni Ricci
•Thanks for the reassurance. I'm trying to stay patient but the financial stress makes it hard.

•I totally get the stress but from everything I've seen, people do get their back pay once claims are approved. Just takes time unfortunately.

One more thing to keep in mind - if you've been job searching during your adjudication period, make sure you're still meeting the work search requirements. That shouldn't affect your back pay but it's important for ongoing eligibility.
0 coins
Giovanni Ricci
•Good reminder! I've been keeping up with job search activities even during the waiting period.

Zara Mirza
•Yeah Washington ESD still expects you to be actively searching for work even if your claim is in adjudication.

For anyone reading this who's about to go through adjudication - document EVERYTHING. Keep records of when you filed, what you reported, any correspondence with Washington ESD. It makes resolving any back pay issues much easier.
