How long does unemployment payment take from Washington ESD after approval?

My Washington ESD claim was finally approved last Thursday after being stuck in adjudication for almost a month. I've been filing my weekly claims but haven't received any payments yet. How long does it usually take for the actual money to show up? My rent is due next week and I'm getting pretty anxious about the timing. Does anyone know if there's a typical delay between approval and first payment?

Usually takes 2-3 business days after you file your weekly claim for the payment to hit your account. Since your claim just got approved, make sure you've filed for all the weeks you were waiting during adjudication - you should get back pay for those weeks too.

Thanks! I did file for the back weeks. Do you know if they all come at once or separately?

They usually come all at once in my experience. Check your payment history on your ESD account to see if they're processing.

Make sure you have direct deposit set up, that's the fastest way. Paper checks can take 7-10 business days. Also double check that you completed your job search requirements for each week - if those aren't logged properly it can delay payments.

I do have direct deposit. I've been logging my job searches on WorkSourceWA like they require. Should I be worried if it's been 4 business days?

4 days is getting into the range where I'd start calling. Have you tried reaching Washington ESD to check on the payment status?

I can never get through when I call! The phone lines are always busy or I get disconnected after waiting for hours.

I had the same issue with getting through to Washington ESD by phone - it's incredibly frustrating. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that calls on your behalf and gets you connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself.

Never heard of that before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point.

Yeah it worked for me. They call the Washington ESD number repeatedly until they get through, then conference you in when they reach an agent. Much better than sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

That sounds too good to be true. How much does something like that cost?

They focus on getting you connected rather than the cost. Check out their site for details, but honestly it was worth it just to actually talk to someone at ESD.

payments usually hit tuesday or wednesday if you file sunday night. been on unemployment 3 times over the years and thats been pretty consistent. if its taking longer than that something might be wrong with your claim

0 coins

I file Sunday nights too. It's been since last Thursday that my claim was approved so I'm definitely worried something's wrong.

yeah i'd definitely call then. or try that claimyr thing the other person mentioned if you cant get through

This is exactly why the unemployment system is broken! They make us wait weeks for adjudication, then more weeks for payments, meanwhile people are losing their homes and can't buy food. It's absolutely ridiculous that we have to use third-party services just to talk to them!

I feel you on the frustration but at least there are options now like that Claimyr service to get through. Better than just being stuck with no way to reach them.

True, I guess any solution is better than no solution when you need answers about your payments.

Just wanted to add - check your ESD account online to see if there are any 'stops' or 'holds' on your payments. Sometimes there are identity verification requirements or other issues that can delay payments even after approval. The payment history section should show you the status of each week.

0 coins

Good idea, I'll check that right now. I hope it's not another verification issue.

Let us know what you find! If there are stops, that's definitely something you'd want to call about or use one of those callback services to get resolved quickly.

Also make sure your bank account info is correct in your ESD profile. I had a friend whose payments were delayed because she had an old account number on file from when she moved banks.

0 coins

Bank info looks correct. This is so stressful, I really need these payments soon.

Hang in there! Once you get through to ESD they should be able to tell you exactly what's causing the delay.

I'm curious about that Claimyr service too - has anyone else used it? Seems like it could be really helpful for situations like this where you need answers quickly.

I used it and it worked well. They called me back when they got through to an ESD agent, which was way faster than trying myself.

My cousin used something similar when she had payment issues. Said it was worth it just to avoid the stress of constantly calling.

For what it's worth, I just got my first payment after approval and it took exactly 5 business days. But I didn't have any complications - just straight approval to payment. If you're having delays there's probably something that needs to be cleared up.

5 days isn't too bad. I'm on day 6 now so definitely something to look into. Thanks for sharing your timeline.

sometimes the system glitches and payments get stuck. happened to me once and i had to call to get them to manually release it. super annoying but once they did it all came through at once

0 coins

That's what I'm worried about. How long did it take you to get through to someone?

took me like 3 days of calling before i got through. now i know about those callback services though so id probably try that first

Check if you need to complete a work search review. Sometimes they require additional documentation about your job search activities before releasing payments, even after approval.

0 coins

I've been keeping my job search log updated on WorkSourceWA. Is there something else I should be doing?

That should be sufficient. But sometimes they randomly select people for additional review. Check your ESD messages to see if they've requested anything.

0 coins

Hope you get it sorted out soon! The waiting is the worst part, especially when you have bills due. Keep us updated on what happens when you manage to reach someone at ESD.

0 coins

Will do! Thanks everyone for the advice and support. Really helps to know I'm not the only one dealing with this.

One more thing - if you do get through to ESD, ask them about expedited payment processing. Sometimes they can manually push payments through faster if you explain your situation with rent being due.

0 coins

That's a great tip! I'll definitely mention my rent situation if I can get through to talk to someone.

Good luck! The squeaky wheel gets the grease with ESD sometimes.

UPDATE: Just wanted to say I finally got through using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Turns out there was a stop on my account for additional identity verification. The agent was able to clear it while I was on the phone and said payments should process within 24 hours. Thanks to everyone who suggested it!

0 coins

That's awesome! I'm definitely going to try Claimyr then. How long did it take them to get you connected?

They called me back in about 2 hours with an agent on the line. So much better than the endless busy signals.

Glad it worked out! That's exactly what happened with me - there was some small issue that was holding everything up that they fixed right away once I could actually talk to someone.

This thread has been super helpful! I'm in a similar situation with delayed payments and was getting really stressed about it. Going to check my account for stops and probably try that callback service if I can't figure it out.

Hope it helps! The most important thing is getting through to actually talk to someone at ESD about what's causing the delay.
